1012 - Squirm (with short: A Case of Spring Fever)

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Mystery Science Theater 3000: Season Ten: 1012 - Squirm (with short: A Case of Spring Fever)
By Chris Lang on Monday, August 02, 1999 - 12:21 am:

Regarding the short: I can't believe that this short was EVER meant to be taken seriously. I don't know about you, but I've never been so mad at springs that I wished all the springs in the world would disappear.

The movie ends with a lot of loose ends unresolved. What ultimately happens to the killer worms? What became of the mother? How many survived the worms' rampage? And most importantly, whatever happened to the guy with the newspaper over his head?

M&TB asked the same question.

Actually, he got teleported to Cleveland in the '70s and met a bunch of aliens from Transexual, Transylvannia.

Not a riff of a joke, the Worm Faced Man looks a lot like Gary "Ba-Ba-Booey" From the Howard Stern Show.

By Matt Pesti on Monday, August 02, 1999 - 10:02 pm:

This episode was preddy good considering they knew the saga was ending. that commerical is great.

By Lea Frost on Friday, August 06, 1999 - 6:42 pm:

I think the most frightening thing about this episode is that our couch broke in the middle of it...

Good ep, though. My favorite riff: "It's Coily's Army of Darkness!"

By Coily on Saturday, August 07, 1999 - 1:00 am:

No springs!

By ScottN on Saturday, August 07, 1999 - 12:48 pm:

I think the most frightening thing about this movie is the fact that it got made... Of course, you could say that about most of the movies they riff on MST3K!

By Lea Frost on Monday, October 04, 1999 - 3:22 pm:

Chris: Actually, the short was meant to plug Chevrolets! :-)

Lots of good riffs in this one, and since I have nothing better to do than post great MST3K lines...

"It's Coily's Army of Darkness!"
"Guns, huh?"
"Where does Coily fit into God's plan for us?"
"Merry Christmas, you wonderful old couch!"
"From then on, Coily visited him nightly, till he was driven mad."
"You'll be the first to die!" (at the end of the short)
"It's hard to work in this heat." "Mother, we live in Michigan!" (funny only because I live there, I guess...)
"I'm a Grand Dragon and I still have to drive a bus..."
"Around here we shape our hair into waves, boy!"
"A certain convocation of politic worms!"
"Let's go back to shouting 'Mr. Beardsley!'"
"Don't listen to him, South, he's just a violent little robot."
"And if you have red hair, do not mate."

It just reaired today on the Sci-Fi Channel. When I saw that spring thing, I thought it was a really bad science video.

By Spornan on Sunday, October 01, 2000 - 3:47 am:

"You'll be the first to die!"

The close up shots of the worms are some of the most disgusting things I've ever seen.

Also, when shoing a wide shot of the worms towards the end, it's clear that the worms are really just a bunch of thick red string.

The "A Case of Spring Fever" short is one of the funniest things I've ever seen...and the most disturbing.

I have no inclination to visit the south.
I also wanted to hit that wimpy Carl Elwes wannabe.

B flicks set in the south always have me chuckling...due to their warped twisted nature (for big laughs, check out Attack of the Giant Leeches).

Hmm. And there are rumours of a seond MST3k movie. I wonder...

By Kinggodzillak on Wednesday, April 03, 2002 - 3:45 pm:

Yeah, did the worms kinda just GIVE UP? Or MELT? Or was it a dream? How did the strange girl get to survive being practically engulfed by worms just by hiding in a chest? Why didn't the strange repair guy at the end say 'Where is everybody?' Movie? Hey, movie, come back here and explain yourself right now!

That was pretty disgusting, that whole film. But A Case of Spring Fever...... WOW! When's the sequel due?

By Meg on Sunday, March 30, 2003 - 8:59 pm:

My friend has this episode and The Giant Spider invasion on the same tape. We call it the "Diss the South double feature"

By Gordon Lawyer on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 5:35 am:

You know, it's considered bad golf etiquette to be talking when your opponent is taking their shot. I'm surprised they didn't drag him off the green and beat the @^$#^#$ out of him.
The main feature I think could be considered as painful as Manos or Red Zone Cuba.

By Snick on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 11:44 am:

Good lines:

"Oh no, he's gonna get Dave Barry all over his head."
"Ah! The monster called Gamera is attacking the city. Hmm!"
"This must be the eponymous 'Willie'."
"Patch-Ass and Scrawny, I told you to play outside!"
"Dªmn, she out-Southerened me."
"I do hope Ashley Wilks can get through."
"You're a stup¡d-head!"
"C'mon men, make everything loamy!"
"Chaaarge! Half an hour more and we stike!"
"Ah, she's got one of those angry bull worms back there."
Geri: "I think Roger had to work late at the worm farm."
Tom: "One of the worms is calving."
"My hair challenges yours to a fight!"
"I was trampled by a worm stampede...ughhh..."
"All that shirt needs is a Chianti bottle and a menu."

Mike and the Bots' thickly-accented overlapping good ol' boy conversation in the diner was also pretty funny.

The un-MiSTed version of this film was on MoviePlex last night.

By Tom Vane on Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 11:34 pm:

I saw this once (years ago) and most of what I remember is from the ridiculous short. I know I thought the movie was bad, but apparently some people actually like it. I was once reading the comments left about another movie on the Internet Movie Database, and someone disparigingly mentioned MST3K, "who butchered other such classics as Squirm." Yes, somebody actually thinks this is a "classic."

How is it everyone remembers so many riffs from an episode? When I think of an episode later I can think of maybe one or two riffs from the whole thing but remember a lot more from the host segments.

By Snick on Sunday, March 26, 2006 - 12:39 pm:

It's simply watching them over and over and over again. :-)

"Mr. Beasley! Your victims are here!"
"Mr. Beasley's bathroom!"
"Oh great, you've got my jaw, now what are you going to to, GENIUS?!"
"Baiterers to Her Majesty since 1667."

Chris Lang in the last century:

What became of the mother?

She becomes worm food.

In the actual movie, when Mick arrives at Geri's house, for the final bit, you see the mother being consumed. This bit is cut from the MST3K version.
