So Different!!! I can't contain my excitement!

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_voice) on Thursday, December 21, 2006 - 10:55 am:

oh, and my profile has been reset...

By Butch Brookshier (Butchmod) on Thursday, December 21, 2006 - 7:04 pm:

Let's see if this works.

By Butch Brookshier (Butchmod) on Thursday, December 21, 2006 - 7:07 pm:

Okay, I've reopened the boards I mod to posting. They are:
Classic Trek
NextGen
The Twilight Zone
Action Figures
Sc-fi Novels
Non-Sci-Fi Novels
PC Games

I'm setting myself up as the guinea pig to see if we get spammed again. (Hopefully not, fingers crossed.)

By Snick (Snick) on Thursday, December 21, 2006 - 9:04 pm:

Whoa, this is great! Old-fashioned NitC, the post headers look exactly as they did at the beginning! Woo!

By Anne Stockwell (Bajoran) on Thursday, December 21, 2006 - 9:05 pm:

LET THE FUN BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Thursday, December 21, 2006 - 10:23 pm:

Is it safe? Is it safe to open up all our boards? Has the spam demon been vanquished by the brave Sir Farrand?

1 Seriously, though, can I open up my boards?

2 Also, when I try using the Last Day link I have bookmarked, I get the File Locked page, which I'm guessing means that that's the old site, right?

3 But when I use the Last Day link on the left hand menu, it only displays the topics on which there are new posts. It does not display who authored the posts, or the first 30 or so characters of those posts, as it did on the old site. Is this how it's going to be? Does this mean that that feature is now permanently lost? If so, I'm really going to miss it. Seeing all the conversations in progress, even on boards I don't go to, was an integral part of visiting here.

4 This was the most perplexing part: Even though that Last Day list shows the topics on which posts have been made, it isn't accurate, because among the list is this board, and the most recent post prior to this one was Torque's above, which is from yesterday evening. The other three boards are Classic Trek, NextGen and Comic Books, but clicking on all three of those shows that not only are there no new posts, but that the Add a New Message fields are still disabled on those boards. Having just noticed this new board, I now understand that that list wasn't indicating that posts were on those topics' main boards, just somewhere in those topics. PLEASE tell me that we don't have to go searching through an ENTIRE topic's boards to find new posts! It would be impossible to do that!

Any answers, guys? Phil? Are you still working the kinks out? Please let us know.

Happy Holidays!

I now declare this bridge OPEN!

By Benn (Benn) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 12:06 am:

Whoo hoo! We be back in bidness. Now when's the M*A*S*H board gonna be reopened? Hint, hint.

By Josh M (Joshm) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 12:18 am:

Did you click on the little "+" boxes? The posts remain hidden unless you select them.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 3:07 am:

I've re-opened Stargate but will give it a day or two before daring to re-open the others!

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 8:10 am:

Okay, that helps somewhat, Josh. Now I can see them. But is this how it's going to be now? You have to click on each and every topic to see the new posts individually? There's no longer a way to see them all at the same time?

By Mike Cheyne (Mikec) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 9:24 am:

"Is it safe?"

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 10:06 am:

Hey, I said that already! :-)

Guys, just so you know, I've reopened my boards, but for some reason I can't get into Movies or Voyager. And why I try to change around the settings in the Access Manager, I get a Directory Move Error page saying "could not move all files. Errors follow:.." I have no problem getting into PM or LM, mind you. If anyone has any idea how to fix this, let me know. Thanks.

By Benn (Benn) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 10:37 am:

I dunno what you did to the Movies boards, Luigi, but I got this message when I tried to get into them: "404 Not Found
The requested URL /discus/messages/8/8.html?1166565766 does not exist."

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 11:58 am:

That's what I got.

By Mike Cheyne (Mikec) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 2:55 pm:

I didn't know if you were making the Marathon Man reference or not, so I thought I'd sledgehammer it.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 6:05 pm:

Luigi, I went into the Access Manager to have a look at things on Voyager and saw the list of threads/subtopics box on the page layout part hadn't been selected. I checked the box and saved the change, but when the page came up, there were no actual threads shown, just the two bars they would go between. I did a search and found the boards were still there, but no longer linked to the first page in Voyager. I made the first page able to have messages posted on it and made link posts for the 7 seasons and the Voyager Sink as a temporary measure. I think you can fix it by just creating new subtopics on the first page, then moving all the threads to the new subtopics, but you may want to contact Phil and see if there is something he or the Discus people can do to fix it first.

Oh, I also reset it and the Movies board to public reading. I didn't change any of the other settings.

By Josh M (Joshm) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 9:14 pm:

Luigi Novi: Okay, that helps somewhat, Josh. Now I can see them. But is this how it's going to be now? You have to click on each and every topic to see the new posts individually? There's no longer a way to see them all at the same time?

It seems that way, yeah. Any topic of interest can be viewed, but not all at the same time, like we used to have.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 9:48 pm:

Well, that just blows. Between the inability to see all threads, no visible IP numbers, postes able to post without apparent username accounts, and now the fact that I can't make a post on the Spider-Man 3 board with a url in it, even if I don't format it as a link (it keeps saying that the post has "too many" links to external sites, even if it's just one--no doubt an anti-spam measure that eliminates ALL link posting), what's the point? Are any of these features mere settings that can modified?? Sigh.

Butch, thanks. I have no idea what you just said, but since I'm tired, and have presents to wrap, I'll try and tacklet it either tomorrow, before I leave for my aunt's house on Christmas, or the day after. Happy Holidays.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 10:00 pm:

I mentioned before that the Last Day page indicated recent messages on boards where there were none. Now it's the inverse: The post by me above is not reflected in the current Last Day page, even after I hit the "Refresh" button on my browser. Ditto for the posts I made on two boards in Movies, and presumably this one as well.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 11:18 am:

There are bound to be some teething problems, but I love this new version - it's so much faster!

Thanks for everything you've done to save the board, Phil. Have a great Christmas! Oh, and the same to all our moderators and posters who waited patiently for the board to be resurrected!

By Mark Morgan, Kitchen Sink Mod (Mmorgan) on Sunday, December 24, 2006 - 10:20 am:

I believe I have reopened the Sink. Possibly.

By Butch Brookshier (Butchmod) on Sunday, December 24, 2006 - 5:03 pm:

OK Callie, here's one, a teething problem, that is.
When I click on the link for the Movies board from the topics list, I get a 404, page not found error.
I've tried my different browsers and it does it with all of them.
The board and all the pages are still there if I go into administration, but they aren't showing up on the page for regular posters.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Sunday, December 24, 2006 - 5:31 pm:

And another thing.
Phil, is there an option in Adminstration to make showing all messages in page manager the default setting? I was deleting a bunch of the 'authentication error' posts and I had to keep selecting the 'show all messages' option because the current default only shows the first 20.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Monday, December 25, 2006 - 9:34 am:

Yeah, I'd like to know if that's possible too.

By Admin (Admin) on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 10:37 am:

Greetings All!

Sorry...I was checking the wrong place for updates on problems...

I will check on an option in the admin section for showing all messages. Also, what links on the main topic page of the board are broken?

I will try to look into those as well over the next few days.

Phil

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 1:41 pm:

Hi Chief!

Not sure what other ones are broken, but Movies is definitely bad.

By Butch Brookshier (Butchmod) on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 5:33 pm:

I've checked all the other links on the main page and they all work. I can't say about any individual threads. I haven't stumbled across any so far.

By Admin (Admin) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 8:55 am:

Butch!

I dug around in the support forums on Discus and the best way to show all messages is to alter the code for the admin pages...which Discus does not recommend!! Apparently, they don't have any way to change a setting to do this yet. (But I'm sure that they are working on it since they are aware of the problem ;-)

Don't have an answer yet on the "Movies" link but will try to do some more digging this weekend.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 5:14 pm:

Thanks, Phil.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 5:33 pm:

Is "msmith" still around? I've got some "I Love Lucy" nits I'd like to post.

By Benn (Benn) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 10:35 pm:

And what about "amartin"? From what I can tell, she hasn't signed in since 2002. I ask because I've got several nits I want to post on the M*A*S*H boards. (I know, I'm starting to sound like a broken record about this.)

By Callie (Csullivan) on Sunday, December 31, 2006 - 6:36 am:

Would one of the Roving Mods be able to re-open the boards that are still closed? I ask because I don't know if they have that level of access but if they do, perhaps someone with nothing better to do (!) could give a list of closed boards.

By Mike Cheyne (Mikec) on Sunday, December 31, 2006 - 6:50 am:

I'm not sure how to re-open the boards--is there just one action to take or do you actually have to re-open every individual page on the board?

By dude (Somedude) on Sunday, December 31, 2006 - 1:35 pm:

Hey if there's a moderator opening I'll take it. Seriously.

By Josh M (Joshm) on Sunday, December 31, 2006 - 2:46 pm:

Mike, I think you can do it pretty easily in the Access Manager for whichever board you need to open.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Sunday, December 31, 2006 - 6:02 pm:

Callie, Mike, Josh:
Yes, a Roving Mod can open all of the various boards. I was considering doing that this weekend, but I didn't want to be stepping on the regular mod's toes. Reopening each board can be done easily from the Access Manager. Resetting the options to one that allows posting (currently they are set to 'all posting disabled') will reopen all threads that were open before. If a Mod had closed an individual thread because of targeting by the Spambot, those may have to be opened individually.

I'm going to be posting a message regarding this on the Moderator Messages board. Would the other Mods please check it and give me your opinion?

By Benn (Benn) on Sunday, December 31, 2006 - 11:45 pm:

To whoever was responsible (Butch?): Thanks for opening the M*A*S*H boards. I just finished posting the last of my nits for the series. Until I find more, that is.

Happy New Year!!!!

By Butch Brookshier (Butchmod) on Monday, January 01, 2007 - 7:45 am:

Not me, Benn. Must have been the topic mod or another roving mod.

By Admin (Admin) on Monday, January 01, 2007 - 7:33 pm:

Greetings All!

Butch! I did some digging around and even tried doing a few "regenerations" but nothing seems to help the "Movies" board. I've written Discus on the matter.

Happy New Year all!

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_voice) on Monday, January 01, 2007 - 7:35 pm:

Maybe its because they've gone digital and therefore aren't really moving pictures "movies" anymore?

By Admin (Admin) on Wednesday, January 03, 2007 - 5:35 pm:

Greetings All!

The movie board should be up!

Happy New Year!

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Wednesday, January 03, 2007 - 6:54 pm:

Yes it is. Thanks Phil.
Now the other thing I forgot to mention. On the Voyager main page, the list of subtopics for the seasons and the sink have disappeared. The part of the page the list goes on is there, but there aren't any links in it. I experimented and the topic mod can create new links with the correct URL, but I thought I'd still mention it in case there is something simpler you or the Discus folks can do.
I created posts with links as a temporary measure. There may have been other subtopics I overlooked.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_voice) on Wednesday, January 03, 2007 - 7:16 pm:

Just out of curiosity, what became of the rest of nitcental? besides the discus stuff?

I noticed a few of the links in it no longer work.

By Butch Brookshier (Butchmod) on Saturday, January 06, 2007 - 7:32 pm:

OK, all boards should be open to posting. Leave a message here, if they are not.
