Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Primeval: Season 1: Episode 1
Rex, gorgonopsid (Permian era)

In Nick’s office, he picks up a pile of papers from his desk and looks for somewhere to put it. In the long shot, Connor’s dissertation is in a red folder on the top of the pile. In the close-up, the folder has suddenly gone from the top and is several layers deep in the pile. Nick drops the pile in the bin and suddenly the red folder is back on the top again.

Connor’s database contains information on all non-extinct vertebrates, yet later he finds information about the gorgonopsid in it. I suppose it’s possible he had an internet link and had found the information elsewhere, but why else make a big fuss about his database in the first place?

Ben’s mother takes forever to react to the noises coming from upstairs. However, her reaction when she does get up there – “I want this mess tidied up now!” – is remarkably mild considering that, as far as she’s concerned, her son has just smashed out his bedroom window!

Why do only Nick and Abby have to sign the Official Secrets Act and not Connor and Stephen – and, for that matter, Ben? (And if a child that young can’t be made to sign the Act, surely he and his mother should at least get a good talking to by government officials?)

Connor and Ben both use the word “dinosaur” frequently during the episode. Actually none of the creatures in the whole of Season 1 are dinosaurs. The first true dinosaur doesn’t appear until Season 2.

I loved Rex bopping to the muzak in the lift!

Why is the gorgonopsid apparently tracking Ben? He isn’t still bleeding. Or is it pure (and rather ridiculous) coincidence that it turns up at the school when only Ben and a teacher are there?

If the gorgonopsid takes its prey back to the forest and hangs it up in trees for later, why does it leave Stephen unconscious on the ground?

Isn't a Pteranodon a dinosaur? And the Raptors? I know there was some confusion as to which Raptor family they were, but Wikepedia seems to think that all the Raptors were dinosaurs.

Mind you, I started reading this, thinking, "Hold on, they were ALL dinosaurs" only to discover that, actually, you're quite right, even the dinosaury looking ones weren't!

I haven't actually watched any on series one, just seen the odd clip here and there. Is it possible Ben still smelt of blood, even though he wasn't bleeding?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 - 2:50 am:

Pteranodon is a pterosaur, not a dinosaur. The only difference I can think of at the moment is pterosaurs have hollow bones while dinosaurs have solid bones, but I believe there are others.

To the best of my knowledge raptor usually refers to a group of birds or a type of dinosaur (thanks to Jurassic Park). I think I saw a clip of that ep, but not enough to say for certain.

I'm wondering why no one heard that creature smashing all that stuff trying to get the gal at the beginning.

Also, you're being chased by a big ol' monster do you just knock on the window of a store & hope someone opens the door or do you smash the window, setting off a burglar alarm that will summon the police?

According to the commentary on the DVD for Season 2 Episode 1, raptors are classified as dinosaurs and therefore their appearance in S2 Ep 1 is the first appearance of true dinosaurs in the series.

I believe that supermarket windows are strengthened, so I'm not sure Helen could have punched her way in, and she didn't really have time to look around for something large to use. Anyway, breaking the glass would have just let the gorgonopsid in too!

Ben cut his finger on a thorn the night before, so presumably he'd had a wash since then. Then again, small boy ... maybe not. ;-)

Ah1, I'm getting confused. I thought that the Raptors had appeared in series 1. I even got that feeling from watching season 2, but I was probably getting mixed up with Jurassic Park - sort of "Oh, we know what these are" kind of thing.

Wikipedia actually do a run down of of the monsters - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_creatures_in_Primeval

I found it fascinating to read.

NANJAO:

When they did the "Eight Years Later" thing, I thought, "Those cars at the beginning didn't look that old!" At which point I realized that eight years before this episode was 1999. *Sigh* How time flies.

Someone with far more time than me needs to look at the T-shirt the man in the supermarket is wearing, and all the visible cars and lights and trolleys in the car park, and find out if all of them were really available in 1999!
