Episode 5

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Primeval: Season 3: Episode 5
I don’t even know how to describe this one! Umm, mushroom man?!

Was there really no loose metal in the flat to be attracted into the anomaly apart from Lloyd’s mobile phone?

Has Lloyd never seen Alien?! You never lean into something that’s opening like that!

Great lines (why does Lester get all of them?!):
(to Becker, annoyed at Danny) “Could you pistol-whip him?”
“At the risk of sounding like someone from the Old Testament, is there any reason why you’re keeping animals in the ARC?”
“Well, this could be tricky to explain to the next of kin. ‘The good news: he’s not technically dead; the bad news: he’s turned into a mushroom’.”
“So what’s our Plan B? (Blank looks from everyone) You know, just once. Just once would be nice!”
(yelling to Danny before he drives off into danger) “The management accepts no responsibility for loss or personal injury!”

When and why did Abby become a botanist?

Interesting to see that Nick retrieved the torn-up photo of Claudia. Did he pick it up at the time, or did he go back for it?

Everyone seems to be a bit of a jack of all trades – how does Connor know how to analyse the stuff from the flat when he’s just supposed to be a computer expert?

Why didn’t Sir Richard seek medical help when the fungus started growing on his hand?

If it’s so urgent that they find Sir Richard, maybe there should be more than just three people searching somewhere as enormous as St Pancras Station?!! Becker keeps putting his hand to his headset as if he’s getting reports from other people but we never see them, even when Jenny finds out which train Sir Richard should be on. And why don’t Jenny, Becker and Abby spread out to search the train?

When the ‘mushroom man’ started pushing itself out of the body bag, for a moment there I thought it was a future predator and we were witnessing how they came about. Instead it eventually looked more like a complete rip-off from The Fly II.

All right, so Baker was unlikely ever to change back into a human, but it was still a bit undiplomatic of Danny and Connor to high-five each other after blowing him up.

What happened to the soldier who got infected by Sir Richard?

Abby objects to simply grilling the former Sir Richard, but then uses her flamethrower far more than any of the others every time she turns a corner.

When Danny and Connor were in the lab, Sarah couldn’t speak to them without pressing a button to activate the comms (and, for that matter, why didn’t she just point behind them?). When Connor’s in the lab with Sid, he and Sarah talk without her pressing anything.

Why didn’t Danny drive the van straight into the centre of the ARC and leave it there?

Well done to TPTB for finding enough budget to actually cool the sets down enough to produce visible breath from the actors. And major kudos to them for not having the team use a defibrillator on Jenny. But shouldn’t someone have been doing CPR on her?

Andrew-Lee once again steals the episode with his heartfelt “Please not again” prayer.

How does Danny know about Claudia? Jenny didn’t have time to tell him earlier, and it’s still the same day when she leaves. So who told him, and why?

Why does Lester let Jenny go without working out a period of notice? Even if he didn’t think it was appropriate for her to continue leading the team, she could still do PR work while she works out her notice. And why isn’t anyone around to see her off?

Despite the loss of Nick and now Jenny’s departure, this series is still keeping my attention.

Yes, I'll admit I'm still watching, but only for Lester. I wondered about the Claudia Brown photo too, although I think it was a great moment. About time someone realised that Cutter was telling the truth all along.

I wondered if the mushroom had affected Sir Richard's brain - like 'magic mushrooms', which started to control him. So it would have dictated that he a) didn't go anywhere which might have stopped the spread of the mushroom and b) told him to find somewhere dark and damp.

"Grilled mushrooms". I like it :-).

I suspect the soldier 'disappeared'. Like the Sabre tooth Tiger. And the rest. I wonder if there are machinations which we are not aware of...

Ah. I was going to put Lester's lines into the Great lines area, but you've beaten me to it! Although, do you feel that Lester's lines have been less good this series?

This is the sort of place where one can leave at a moment's notice. Actually, it is really suspicious that they let her go so quickly. In a place with issues of MAJOR security, I think that they would have made sure she wasn't running off to a foreign power or something. I don't think that there was time for her to have a debriefing or anything either.

Never!! He doesn't get quite so many - I guess they're working on building Danny, Sarah and Becker into the team - but they're still classic!

*Callie tries to dial back her Lester obsession a bit so that she doesn't look like a total fangirl ... and fails dismally as usual*

Hey, we just have great taste. That NEVER needs dialling back!
