So why were the only ARC workers to return at the end Connor, Abby, Matt, Emily & Becker. What about all the other people who were on the various teams? Shouldn't we have seen a few extras milling about implying more people actually work for the ARC?

By Callie (Csullivan) on Sunday, July 03, 2011 - 8:35 am:

Why did Connor land so far from the anomaly? I know he was high up when he was sucked through – was the anomaly rotating and so it spat him out sideways on the other side?

Why are there so few staff in the control room with Philip? At such a critical time as the first opening of an anomaly, shouldn’t the place be absolutely full of people?

How convenient that the anomaly opens in an area that Matt knows. Also, he seems to have arrived safely and normally rather than being spat out yards away.

If this was the future that Helen wanted, then she must have also seen the future that made her want to end the world for humanity. So this must mean that anomalies can take you to alternate futures.

Did Murray Gold do the background music for this episode? It sounded very Doctor Who choral at times when they were outside New Dawn.

Lester’s snide comment about mobile phone reception doesn’t begin to explain how Becker can possibly be getting through. With (presumably) the entire world suffering power outages and even if (miraculously) the mobile network is still working, every person with a mobile is going to be on the phone right now.

I imagine that everyone who was watching assumed that Abby told Connor she was pregnant. Why wind us up like that only to make it something different at the end? (Unless she said, “I’m pregnant, so we’re going to have to get married.”)

Presumably these future predators are much earlier in their evolution than the ones we’ve encountered before, ’cause this lot were absolutely useless. Even with the EMDs zapping them, a group that large should have picked off Matt, Connor and Abby in no time; and they’re also much slower than the ones we’ve seen before.

How the hell did the future predators get through that tiny anomaly in the lab? We really needed a scene to show it expanding, if only temporarily, so they could get through.

But I love Lester’s long look of horror as he realises what it is in the ARC control room. It’s been a long time since the end of Season 2 when he was attacked by one in the old ARC, and he was practically alone then too. So it was only part-jokingly that I was whispering to him, “Get to the mammoth’s pen – he’ll protect you!”

Why are any of the computers at New Dawn still working?

An anomaly the size of the one that breaks out of New Dawn must have an absolutely enormous magnetic pull. There’s no way that anything metal within miles should be just sitting there quietly, and certainly the crew ought to be ducking out of the way of the cars as they’re dragged in.

My download had a couple of scenes missing – one with Lester and Jess hiding under the table in his office while she texted Becker, and the following one of Becker arriving at New Dawn. I thought at the time that there seemed to be something missing, and I don’t know if those scenes were actually not in the broadcast version or whether the seeder lost those scenes in the version they uploaded. I saw the episode second time through on the DVD which was released a day or two later and it finally made sense how Becker had known that they were in trouble back at the ARC.

I love Lester’s face at the noise from Jess’ heels, but his shoes aren’t exactly silent either.

And again I say: four or five future predators vs Jess (terrified and with a failing EMD) and Lester (unarmed as far as I can tell) – there’s no way the two of them shouldn’t be dead. Which was why I was watching with my hand over my mouth in utter dread as the team arrived back and prowled around the ARC while the background sound effects included a tolling bell.

Matt suggests getting a drip into Lester and then sealing him in the medical bay. Or how about that big safe Panic Room you only introduced a couple of episodes ago? Surely that’d be perfect for this scenario?

I love how it’s taken all the way from the beginning of Season 3 to re-use the idea of the Sun Cage, though I’ll admit it took me a long moment of frowning before I remembered that a Sun Cage will move an anomaly. But has Connor always had one lying around in his lab, or did he have to build it from scratch?

What happened to the three other predators that Jess claimed were around?

Again, stuff getting sucked into the merged anomalies is strangely (and oh-so-conveniently) localised. And presumably Matt had to get out of the car and open the Sun Cage to let the smaller anomaly out? But how does he walk out from all that devastation and implosion, especially when – as Emily pointed out – by closing the anomaly he probably shouldn’t even exist?

When Becker is comforting Emily as the anomaly closes, slash shippers will have been delighted to note that he looks more devastated that she does, and – similarly – is one of the happiest to see Matt alive!

As the shadowy figure approached, I was saying, “Danny? Helen? Claudia? Nick?!” and so I was quite disappointed when it turned out to be another Matt.

Lester makes a marvelous recovery at the end.

So, did the magnetic poles reverse?

What about all the other people who were on the various teams?

I suppose you could just about argue that they’re still out in the field chasing all the rampaging creatures that don’t have a way home. But that doesn’t excuse the disappearance of all the scientific types – unless they were dragooned into service during the last episode. Then again, with all the military out of the building, the civilians perhaps decided to honour them by taking over their ‘going on tea break at the most inconvenient moment’ habits.

This was a great final episode. It answered most of the questions and didn’t leave us with a ton of cliffhangers, but left it open enough that – if they can get the go-ahead for a movie, either film or TV – there’s still plenty of material.
