Primeval: New World

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Primeval: Spaghetti Junction (aka The Kitchen Sink): Primeval: New World
The Canadian spinoff series.
By Matthew See (Matthew_see) on Friday, June 21, 2013 - 6:38 pm:

The final episode of Primeval: New World was first shown in the world in Canada on February 19 2013 which could be the last of Primeval in any form.
Somewhat curiously exactly a week beforehand on February 12 came the original world airing in the UK of Death In Paradise 2.6 A Dash of Sunshine which featured a reunion of some of the cast of the UK series with Ben Miller, James Murray and Hannah Spearitt.
Miller is the lead actor of Death In Paradise while James Murray and Hannah Spearitt were the guest stars. In A Dash In Paradise James Murray and Hannah Spearitt played ex-fiancées to each other and it is in contrast to the fact that they weren’t lovers in Primeval.

I just discovered that Syfy is airing episodes of Primeval New World http://www.syfy.com/primeval apparently they've aired two eps already. They can also be found on Hulu.com, but only on the Hulu Plus pay service (and probably only for Americans.) Not sure if it's set in the same universe as the British show or it's own continuity.

The episode titles are
The New World
Sisiutl
Fear Of Flying
Angry Birds
Undone

As I understand it, Connor puts in a guest appearance or two during this series, but otherwise it's a brand new cast. No Lester, no Callie watching!

(Well, I might if it was on British TV but it's only on subscription channels that I don't subscribe to.)

Yeah, after posting I watched some of the free clips Hulu had, heard a familiar voice and went, "That guy looks familiar!"

The New World

Connor's comment that the animals are like threads and pulling the wrong one can have devastating consequences.
Weeeeeeeellllllll... while on the one hand it's understandable from the way time can be changed in the Primevalverse. On the other hand the ARC sure seemed to have kept or killed a bunch of animals without any apparent time changing so it would seem to be quite a low level probability.

(same episode, for some reason I thought the clip was of a different episode.)

A kid has been kidnapped by a pterandon and the guy in charge contacts the kid by radio and asks the kid what he can see and the kid says, "The monster!"
Excuse me? Most kids his age eat, breathe and drink dinosaurs and related creatures. Why doesn't the kid know this is a pteranodon?

For that matter the pteranodon appears to be the Arnold Shwarzenegger of pteranodons, more muscular than most reconstructions depict them.

Dammit, Keith, now you've made me order the DVD boxset for Series 1! I wasn't at all interested before.

Amanda Tapping is in it?!!

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, July 11, 2013 - 5:26 am:

Sorry?

Whoa! Springing for a boxset before searching youtube, or some other site, for uploaded episodes? I hope you do like it!

The clips did look good, with the possible exception of one creature.

I also wondered if a real snake the size of the Titanboa could move as fast as was shown, while simultaneously being creeped out because snakes are not my favorite creature.

Also interesting as this seems to be one of the few times where the city of Vancouver is actually playing Vancouver instead of some other city. (Hope it pulls it off. It would be embarrassing if they had to cast another city to play Vancouver. ;-)

The New World

NANJAO. Connor looks more like a villain in his first appearance on the show than a hero. ;-)

Connor really should work on his cover stories.

When does this ep exist in relation to the main series? On the one hand his comments about not messing with it sounds like it's after Season 5, but didn't anomolies open up all over the world and various animals were seen by all kinds of people?

Dylan says the BASE jumper had tooth marks which would mean the creature is not Pteranodon which is toothless, but Ludodactylus. However, a freeze frame of the creature in the episode shows it to be the toothless Pteranodon.
So where did the tooth marks on the victim come from?

Me - the kid says, "The monster!"
Well, having seen the full episode the first shot of the Pteranodon comes after the kid says monster, so either the writer was trying to be clever but not giving the surprise away half a second before we see the creature, or the writer was being really cynical and was afraid the special effects team would screw it up if he actually named it.

Chilling finale. ;-)

Could they have been claw marks instead?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, July 13, 2013 - 3:41 am:

Given that Dylan is in Animal Control, or something like that, I would think she has the training to differentiate between damage caused by teeth or claws.

Sisiutl

Mac is over the anomoly when it forms so why doesn't the magnetism pull the boat down?

Fear Of Flying

Those bugs work fast. The pilot coughs for a bit and he's dead? No scream?

Probably, although, her experience with pteranodon bites must have been quite limited up to that point.

An alternate explanation could be that the edge of the horn sheet covering the beak of that specific species could have been serrated, to help catch and hold fish. Such a serrated edge could mimic tooth marks.

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Saturday, July 13, 2013 - 6:56 pm:

That should be horn sheath, not sheet, sheesh!

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Sunday, July 14, 2013 - 6:06 am:

Using freeze frame there is a slight serration to the beak, but not enough to confuse it with teeth.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Sunday, July 14, 2013 - 6:11 am:

Why is the third episode called Fear Of Flying? Unless I missed something the fear is of the nasty non-flying roaches. They want to get the plane flying.

Yes, there is a bigger, flying bug, but by the time it's seen flying they've been trying to stop it for a while and it comes off a just a surprise or a 'for crying out loud' moment.

Angry Birds

Missed Opportunity. Given the terror birds it would have been interesting to see Danny pop up again.

For now 13 episodes are up for the non-paying riff-raff (like me).

Undone

Warning! Spoiler!!!

Highlight if you've seen the ep or want to be spoiled.

NANJAO. [Insert scream here] In retrospect I should have expected her death. She was fun, enjoyed hunting the creatures and had a loving relationship with a main character so of course she'll be a Sacrificial Lion. TV writers hate happiness and love angst.

Cleanup On Aisle Three

You'd think they'd look up more than they do given that the creature they faced last episode liked heights.

Shame they didn't have any Tasers. Just zap the metal shelves that the creatures are standing on.

The gal can't shut the shed door so she tips it over for protection.
Surprisingly this shed actually has a floor, unlike every one of those types of sheds I've ever seen.

Breakthrough

The technobabble between Evan & Howard really lets you know this is a Judith and Garfield Reeves script.

Course it's a Cabbagehead moment that Howard explains it to Evan, then Evan has to repeat it back to Howard using a metaphor that Howard doesn't need since he already figured it out!

Why exactly do Evan & company need to make the sightings look like hoaxes?
Yeah, yeah, the series wants the conceit of being set in the modern day rather than imaging how the world might change if it were known animals were popping up from other times, but I really hate it when the "heroes" of the show engage in it.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, September 19, 2013 - 5:01 am:

It was almost the end of the final episode before I realized where I'd seen the Colonel before.

The Sound Of Thunder, Part 2

Okay it was stated that the anomolies could not be controlled and the countdown timer was showing different times because of all the different anomolies, but then when time changed all the anomolies started winking out at the same time.
