Jeffrey Hunter died young! What happened?
Guys, this is just too morbid and depressing. It's tough enough watching people from 30+ years ago, and knowing they're much older today, but finding out they're dead isn't something I want to know.
To: Anonymous....
Please don't read this part of "The Kitchen Sink" if it bothers you that much.
This is not to be nitpicked unless a date is incorrect.
This is a memorial page for those who'd like to share memories of a particular actor or actress from "Star Trek"
The lists are for informing those who drop in about who we're immortalizing. The list can be updated by anyone who may know of someone in particular who has died that we might not know that has died. (IE John Colicos)
Also I have permission from the Chief to start this board.
Speaking of which, I'm saddened by the death of Angelique Pettyjohn.... she was babe-a-licious.
To Mike Langi:
According to the internet, Jeffrey Hunter died from a head trauma.
Visit the site above for details about your favorite celeb as well.
I was shock to my shorts to hear that Roger Carmel committed suicide.
I saw Carmel speak at a convention less than a year before he died. I knew he died, I did not know it was suicide. I'm glad I got him to sign my copy of "Mudd's Angels".
Didn't Jeffrey Hunter die while filming a movie? I seem to recall that he was thrown from the back of a horse.
As for the content of this board, as moderator I don't feel that it is too morbid or unfeeling, although I may change the title.
Apparently Mr. Hunter fell at his home and died after brain surgery.
I believe I saw Carmel's name in the credits to an early episode of Duck Tales. (The one with Flintheart Glomgold and a genie.) The thing is, Duck Tales started in '87 but Carmel died in '86. There is no Duck Tales entry under Carmel on the IMDB. Plus, Duck Tales is dubbed in Sweden so I couldn't listen to his voice.
John Lang: any page on Nitcentral is open to being nitpicked, including this one. People are perfectly entitled to say if they find this page upsetting/annoying/irritating/a-waste-of-space in any way. While I agree with you that if they're upset by it, they should stay away, I am afraid you do not have the right to tell anyone that they're not allowed to nitpick this page. Phil may have given you his permission to start up this page, but that doesn't make you the owner, and the front page of Nit Central still says that everybody has the right to their own opinion.

I'm sorry if I implied that I "owned" the board or discussion.
I suppose I took Anonymous' message too seriously.
John Hoyt --- Dr. Boyce --- 1904-1991
Susan Oliver (Vina) as well. I can't remember the exact date of her death. I just remember seeing a newsflash of it, some years ago.
Michael Zaslow(hapless crewman, in Salt monster episode, and from I Mudd, also passed away, December of 1998. He had Lou Gehrig's disease.
David Keith from the DS9 ep. Progress also died some years ago. Suicide. From I remember from the news.
Susan Oliver.......Vina.........1937-1990
I'm not clear on two things,
First, how did Roger C. Carmel die?
And Second, why did Merrit Buttrick die so young?
He was only 29.
And Second, why did Merrit Buttrick die so young?
According to Nimoy's autobio "I am Spock", it was suicide.
Thank's for your assistance ScottN, but your message doesn't answer my question. What exactly does "it was" mean?
sorry! when i checked this 4 hours ago, the word "suicide" was not there! I'm serious! thanks for the help ScottN.
i just saw that Carmel died of suicide too. what's the deal with the word "suicide"?
Merrit Buttrick died so young, according to the sources I've heard, because he died of AIDS.
Feel free to visit my "Club" called "Star Trek Remembers" in

That is MY site... no nitpicking.

Glen Corbett died of lung cancer, at least according to information from a web site devoted to the actor.

thank's for the assistance guys
Vic Tayback 1929-1990 Jojo Krako- A Piece of the Action
Sorry meant to mention that Vic Tayback died of cancer.
Georgia Brown 10/21/1933-6/6/1992 played Helena Rozhenko, Worf's Mother.
Jon Lormer---------Doctor Theodore Haskins---1906-1986.
He appeared in the Cage.
Jon Lormer also appeared in "Return of the Archons" as Tamar and in "For the World is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky" as the old man who says that very line when he discovers that Yonada is really a ship, and dies for it. I remember Susan Oliver's death in 1990. She was an accomplished pilot, and I was surprised to learn that she never married. I saw her at a convention in 1976, and she was a marvelous lady.
Robert Lansing-------Gary Seven-------1929-1994
Frank Gorshin ... (Bele in "Let that be Your Last Battlefield") is rememered by me in a TV program called "The Copy Cats" that had his impressionistic skills at a height. He was, of course, also known as "The Riddler" in the late 1960's Batman series. If he's still alive and online tonight, please accept my gratitude for your many years of pleasant evenings you have brought me.
My god, that sounds crude. Frank, I'm sorry. I will frame my future comments with a little research. (I feel dumb asking Frank to accept my gratitude when I might think he's dead.)
Do technical people also count on this board? I would like to note makeup artist Fred Phillips, who had to bow out of "The Wrath of Khan" due to eye problems. He eventually went blind and died in 1993.
Why not? We counted Gary Nardino..exec. producer for "STIII"
I remember Bob Lansing from one of the early New York conventions, c.1975. He came as a guest and was having such a good time, he stayed for the rest of the convention.
Frank Gorshin is very much alive. He hosted this past week's "Biography" on A&E dealing with actors who played in the "Batman" TV series.
Gene L. Coon....Writer.......1924-1973
To quote Nimoy, Gene Coon gave us "the gift of Klingons".
I would like to note Shari Lewis, co-writer of "The Lights of Zetar." (with her husband, Jeremy Tarcher.) I believe she died in 1996 of cancer.
Ray Walston "Boothby" (STTNG & Voy) 1914-2001
I wanted to add my comments on Ray Walston. It was stated in the Star Ledger that he wanted to leave "My Favorite Martian" after the fourth episode. He, however, stayed with the show its entire run. His performances and especially his professionalism made a gimmicky show better than it had any right to be. Ray Walston was a consummate professional who realized the show was more important than any one individual. You don't see that today, with David Caruso leaving "NYPD Blue" for "greener pastures" (that never materialized) or the greedy, untalented cast of "Friends" threatening to hold out on their fat contracts until even fatter contracts are awarded. Whether on "MFM,", "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Picket Fences" or "Trek," Ray Walston was top of the heap. He will be missed. So long, Boothby.
John A. Alonzo, cinematographer for "Star Trek Generations," "Chinatown" (Oscar) among many others, and movie director (FM). March 15, 2001.
David Graf, Fred Noonan in the Voyager ep "The 37's" and Tackleberry in the "Police Academy" movies, died in March 2001 at the age of 50.
Ted Knight 1923-1986 Carter Wilson in TAS episode Survivor.
Marc Daniels Writer April 1989
Chuck Menville Writer April 1940-1992
Sameul Peeples Writer April 1917-1997
Writers for the animated series as well as original series.
Harry Townes (Reger, "The Return of the Archons") 1915-2001.
Willard Sage 1922-1974 Thann episode empath.
Pilar Seurat, an actress from the Original Series episode "Wolf in the Fold," died on June 2,2001 of lung cancer at the age of 62. Seurat played Sybo, the wife of Prefect Jarvis who was murdered by the entity Redjac while conducting a seance.
from "Star Trek.Com"
Pilar Seurat was the mother of film producer Dean Devlin ("Independence Day," "Godzilla" [1998,] "The Patriot" [2000])
Robert Abel, the first person hired to do the optical effects for "Star Trek The Motion Picture" died Sept. 22, 2001.
Christopher Pettiet Played boy in the High Ground TNG 1976-2000.
I seem to recall that Mark Lenard was born around 1926 or 27, instead of 1920... I could be wrong, though.
Lloyd Haynes (sp?), the Comm Officer (Alden?) from "Where No Man..." died a few years back.

He also played the Regent of Palamar in Business as Usual(DS9).
James Gregory - Dr. Tristan Adams (perhaps best known as Inspector Frank Luger on Barney Miller) - b.1911; died 9/16/02.
I also read (IIRC, from a piece on Robin Curtis, who played Saavik in ST II and IV, with whom he became friends) that Butrick died of AIDS. According to the Internet Movie Database, that is indeed what he died of.
John Meredyth Lucas, one of the few people to have worked in Trek as a writer, director and producer, passed away earlier this month.
He wrote The Changeling(TOS) and Patterns of Force(TOS), directed The Enterprise Incident(TOS) and The Ultimate Computer(TOS), and wrote and directed Elaan of Troyius(TOS).
For more info, you can read about it here.
This was posted elsewhere, but it belongs here, too.
Fred Freiberger, the Trek third season producer, passed away 3/2/03, at the age of 88.
Stephen E. Whitfield (aka Stephen Poe), writer of the classic book The Making Of Star Trek (he also wrote The Making Of Star Trek Voyager) passed away in 2000.
So farewell then, Anthony Caruso, a.k.a. Bela Oxmyx, who passed away last Friday.
Just wanted to correct an earlier post that said David Keith committed sucide. David is alive and well. Brian Keith who guest appeared in a episode of DS9 committed sucide in 1997.
Kathie Browne McGavin, a.k.a. Deela from "Wink Of An Eye," passed away last week.
Graham Jarvis 1930-2003 Klim Dokachin Unification Part I.
William Marshall, who played Dr. Richard Daystrom in TOS ep "The Ultimate Computer," died June 11, 2003, of complications from Alzheimer's Disease.
Booker Bradshaw, who played Dr. M'Benga in two TOS episodes, died April 1, 2003.
Meg Wyllie (The Keeper) passed away Jan 1, 2002
Arthur Batanides - Lt. D'Amato ("That Which Survives")- 1922-2000.
All of Talos IV had a sad new year that year.
Logan Ramsey---Claudius Marcus---3/21/21-6/26/00
Matt Jefferies died this morning. Read about it here.
Wow. Hard to believe. RIP Mr. Jeffries, creator of the Enterprise.
The creators may be dying now, but what they created will live forever. They will be missed, but they had an impact on, at least, one person and that is the greatest legacy you can leave.
Ron Soble-Wyatt Earp-1932-2002
Thalmus Rasulala - Capt. Donald Varley ("Contagion"; TNG) - 1939-1991. (He also acted under the name Jack Crowder.)
Adam- do you know what Capt. Varley died of?
Loved Contagion, a ship falling apart at the seams!
do you know what Capt. Varley died of?
I suppose it had something to do with the antimatter explosion that destroyed the Yamato.
He s Dead Capt. Varley: , er, the actor, Thalmus Rasulala ....electron that was a good episode where Laforge the useless couldn't control the turboshaft! and Picard says Welcome to the bridge! Actually 3 ships faling apart... the Yamato, Enterprise and the Romulan ship
John Anderson 1922-1992 Kevin Uxbridge Survivors
so are they gonna write a ep to explain her never being seen again.
as in, if they needed a crewman to die without it being some no name red stripe.
No offense meant; just curious if the producers would use this incident for a story line.
If this post should be elsewhere, feel free to move it and/or direct me to a spot where this question can be addressed.
Given that she hasn't been seen since Dear Doctor, I doubt they'll mention her.
Two Days, Two Nights, I believe, not Dear Doctor, but your point stands.
Oh yeah. Had a feeling I was forgetting one. (And it's Two Days and Two Nights.) Thanks.
Madlyn Rhue who played Lt. Marla McGivers in the episode "Space Seed", died December 16, 2003 of pneumonia.
Multiple sclerosis forced an end to her acting career in the mid-1990s.

Byron Haskin, associate producer on "The Cage", died 4/16/84. He also directed several films for George Pal, and a number of episodes for the original Outer Limits. (Why he wasn't asked to direct "The Cage" is one of those little mysteries I'll never know.)
One of the movies was: "The War of the Worlds" (1953)
Rudy Solari ----Salish ("Paradise Syndrome")---- 1934-1991
(I remember seeing him in an episode of Police Squad in 1982. According to IMDB, that was his last TV acting role.)
Jerry Goldsmith, composer of the (second?) coolest theme in Star Trek, passed away at the age of 75 after a long battle with cancer.
NO WAY!
DANG!
i saw this week that Shimon Wincelberg also known as S. Bar-David, passed away. He wrote the episode "Dagger of the Mind". And co-wrote "The Galileo Seven".
Jerry Sohl - Writer ("This Side Of Paradise," "The Corbomite Maneuver") - 1913-2002
John Drew Barrymore - 1932-2004 - He was the original actor cast as Lazarus in "The Alternative Factor," but he never showed up to the set. He was replaced by Robert Brown at the last minute.
Stephen Brooks----Ens. Garrovick, "Obsession"----1942-1999

Brock Peters, who played Joseph Sisko, Captain Sisko's father and Admiral Cartwright in STAR TREK IV: The Voyage Home and STAR TREK VI: The Undiscovered Country died at the age of 78 of pancreatic cancer on Tuesday, August 23, 2005.
Sad. I liked Peters in both roles.
His best appearance in DS9 was "Far Beyond the Stars"
RIP Robert Wise, director of ST:TMP.
Addendum to ScottN's posting:
Robert Wise died Sept. 14, 2005
CNN article
Of course I remember him as the director of ST:TMP. I sometimes forget that he also directed "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music". I did not know that he edited "Citizen Kane", usually considered the best movie ever made.
I sometimes forget that he also directed "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music".
Mr. Wise may be best remembered for The Sound Of Music. I am second to none in my respect for Mr. Wise's body of work. But..I have never seen The Sound Of Music, even though it was a continuous staple on TV for over 20 years, and I never intend to.
According to today's New York Post, Mr. Wise accepted the directing job for The Sound Of Music after William Wyler backed out, and Fox agreed to bankroll his war classic The Sand Pebbles.
I attended a couple of Star Trek conventions that were held during the production of Star Trek - The Motion Picture. The cast had nothing but high praise for Mr. Wise. He also had a reputation for being one of the most patient film directors ever.
Hamilton Camp...Leck...Oct. 2, 2005
Michael Piller--Next Generation Executive Producer---Deep Space Nine, Voyager Co-Creator---November 1, 2005
Link to an article here
So the guy who wrote "Unification" And "BoBW" is dead, and Rick Berman still wastes valuable oxygen? :/
IMHO, Next Gen started to hit its stride in the third season, and Michael Piller was one of the reasons why.
Is it true that he wrote Part One of "The Best Of Both Worlds" without a clue as to how he would resolve it?
Adam,
That's what I've read. Part 1 without Part 2.
According to the DVD, the cast came up with the ending for STTNG: Best of Both Worlds
Loulie Jean Norman passed away 8/2/05. The name may escape you, but the voice never will. She was the vocal accompaniment for the theme for TOS.
Jason Evers (Rael, "Wink Of An Eye") passed away 3/13/05. He also had the lead in the grade Z film The Head That Wouldn't Die.
Robert Fortier (Tomar, "By Any Other Name") passed away 1/1/05. It was he to whom Scotty spoke the famous line "It's green," which was given back to Scotty by Data in "Relics."
Paul Carr, who played "great thief" Lt. Lee Kelso in "Where No Man Has Gone Before," passed away 2/17/06. More here.
To clear up a misconception stated by several posters on this board, Roger C. Carmel did NOT commit suicide. He died of congestive heart failure in November of '86. For some unknown reason there is a suicide rumour propogated about him, but it is supported by none of the facts of his death.
Try this. I had heard rumors that Mr. Carmel's death was a result of cocaine abuse; but I don't think they were anything more then that. I also got the impression that he never married.
Bob Johnson died in 1994. OK, you may ask "Who was he?" His Star Trek connection was as the voice of the transporter technician (played by Clegg Hoyt) in "The Cage." His big claim to fame, however, was as the voice on the tape (and eventually, disc) giving Jim Phelps and the IMF their orders in both the original and 1988 revival of Mission: Impossible.
Robert C Johnson voiced a couple of more things in Trek, one of the brains in Gamesters of Triskelion most notably.
Michael Witney---Tyree---1931-1983. (He was married to Twiggy the last six years of his life; they have a daughter named Carly.)
Kind of late on reporting that one arn't ya? lol
I researched Mr. Witney on IMBD, not long after G4 ran "A Private Little War" uncut, and found out about his death.
I would like to mention one of the ultimate Trek fans ever. His name was Michael McMaster, and in the early 1970's, he built a bridge replica that even fooled Gene Roddenberry. He published detailed blueprints of the bridge in a mid-1970's book as well. I saw him at a convention in 1976, where he had brought a second replica of the bridge. Unfortunately, Mr. McMaster never lived to see Star Trek - The Motion Picture, or any of the other films or TV series, as he was killed in a car accident in 1978.
On to part 2
