Star Trek: Of Gods and Men miniseries

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ClassicTrek: Other TOS Incarnations: Star Trek: Of Gods and Men miniseries
By David (Guardian) on Saturday, June 30, 2007 - 11:42 pm:

I'm pretty sure this doesn't have a thread yet, so I'll post it here.

In case you're not aware, Of Gods and Men is an upcoming, web-based miniseries starring Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, and Alan Ruck, with Tim Russ directing and acting. All four reprise their respective roles. Grace Lee Whitney also appears as Janice Rand. Other notable Star Trek alumni who are not reprising their roles include Garett Wang, Chase Masterson, J.G. Hertzler, Gary Graham, Cirric Lofton, and Ethan Phillips. The crew is also made up of Star Trek alumni. The writers, in particular, wrote freelance for Deep Space Nine.

The website is somewhat cagey about the script. The miniseries takes place in 2306, and appears to involve some kind of parallel universe in which a counterpart to the Federation known as the "Galactic Order" reigns. At least, that is my assumption based on the trailer.

Notable film sites include the sets for the fan-made series "Star Trek: New Voyages" and the Vasquez Rocks of TOS fame. Please note that the project is completely unrelated to the "New Voyages" show or production team.

The miniseries will be released as three, 30-minute "webisodes". The release date has been pushed back twice, and currently no release date is set. The producers are hoping to get the work licensed by Paramount so that DVDs can be produced.

IMO, it looks good! A four-minute trailer and the first three minutes of Act I have been released and, while I have a few reservations, I can say that this looks nothing like a cheesy fan film. The little nuggets of info on the website make for great speculation, the most peculiar being a 3d model of an TOS-style Constitution class ship called the "Enterprise-M".

Anyone else have an opinion?

This can also be seen on YOUTUBE.

Watch for Chase Masterson as the Orion Slave Girl.

YEOW!

However, I wish they chose Marina Sirtis for that role.

Question:

Why does Uhura marry Stonn at the end?

I thought Stonn was married to T'Pring.

(See "Amok Time")

Well, a lot of time has passed since Amok Time. Perhaps something has happened to T'Pring. Perhaps Stonn found that indeed having was not as pleasing as wanting. Who knows?

I thought the miniseries was pretty good overall. It did seem a little rough, though, to go from idealic scenes on Vulcan to Vulcan being destroyed. Seems like there should have been a little something inbetween.

The JJ Abrams movie seems very similar to this in a few ways. The main antogonist (Charlie Evens/Nero) is not a 'Mwa Ha Ha' villian, but rather someone who feels betrayed by someone they trusted. The person they feel betrayed them is (Kirk/Spock). They go back to the past and alter an event surrouning Kirk (preventing his birth/causing his father to die before he did in the Prime Time line). In the altered reality, Vulcan is destroyed.

Of course, there are differences too. Charlie deliberately travels to the past to change events. Nero does it accidentally, but takes advantage of it. Of course, in the end, the time line Charlie created is erased, while the one Nero created remains in existence.

So, in the reality Charlie created, since James T. Kirk never existed, Chrisopher Pike stayed in command of the Enterprise. The mission to the edge of the galaxy happened, Gary Mitchell got turned into a god. However, unlike Kirk, Pike was unable to stop Mitchell, and Mitchell, using his powers conquered the Federation, the Klingons, the Romulans, the Cardassians, and built his "Galactic Order". I guess with the powers he had, Mitchell could have conceivably conquered them all.

I wonder what happened to Elizabeth Dehner in this reality. She wasn't even mentioned.

This was cleary a labour of love to all involved. I enjoyed watching it.

Not to mention, Nichelle Nichols got to finally come into her own with Uhura and take center stage! :-)

My only complaint with the film is, perhaps, the music; it sounds pretty cheap. That said, I certainly couldn't do any better, so I'm hardly in a position to criticize. :-)

Yeah, and she clearly enjoyed herself :-)
