Star Trek Day On Paramount+

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ClassicTrek: The Classic Trek Sink: Star Trek Day On Paramount+
By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Thursday, August 18, 2022 - 11:33 am:

NOT!
From comicbookresources.com;
"Paramount announces Star Trek Day 2022, an annual event dedicated to the beloved sci-fi franchise.
The live-streamed showcase will take place on Paramount+ on Sept. 8 and will consist of "back-to-back, in-person conversations with cast members from the Star Trek universe, along with exciting announcements and reveals throughout." The 2-hour event will be hosted by Star Trek: Lower Deck stars Tawny Newsome and Paul F. Tompkins as the pair guide viewers through the celebration which will "unite iconic cast members from the television series."
"Ahead of the event, Paramount revealed the programming schedule for Star Trek Day 2022, which will feature every modern installment in the franchise:
Star Trek: Picard with series stars Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd.
Star Trek: Lower Decks with voice cast members Tawny Newsome, Noël Wells and Dawnn Lewis.
Star Trek: Prodigy with series voice cast including Brett Gray and Kate Mulgrew.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds with series stars Rebecca Romijn, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia and Babs Olusanmokun."
"Beyond these interviews, viewers will also be able to check out a variety of featurettes exploring the history and impact of the Star Trek franchise. These include a video tribute to the late Nichelle Nichols, a behind-the-scenes set tour of Star Trek: Discovery, a cosplay runway and a musical performance by Reggie Watts from The Late Late Show with James Corden."
"Star Trek Day is being hosted on Paramount+ but fans living in areas that are unable to access the streaming platform will be able to watch the proceedings on alternative sites. The live stream can also be accessed on both Paramount and Star Trek's official YouTube channels as well as through StarTrek.com/Day."
"Star Trek Day 2022 will take place on Sept. 8 on Paramount+."

Uh...
Anybody else notice that with the exception of a nod to Nichelle Nichols, the first 39 years are virtually completely ignored in favour of present-day (NOT) Star Trek?
No Shatner, Takei, or Koenig from the Original Series.
No Next Generation.
No Deep Space 9.
No Voyager.
No Enterprise.
Hell, not even a nod to JJ Abrams/Chris Pine movies.
Just the drek that they been serving up since Discovery premiered.
Riddle me this; When is Star Trek Day not Star Trek Day?
When none of the people responsible for the first 39 years of the franchise are a part of it, and they pass off people from today's series as if they're the ones that created the Trek phenomenon.
Disrespectful.

It doesn't sound all that bad.

I'd go- if only to taunt the guests.

Sadly(boo-boo), I can't go- I'm to cheap to pay for this garbage.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, August 18, 2022 - 10:21 pm:

Can't say I'm surprised about this.

It's the same with Doctor Who. I've seen Modern Who praised as the best thing this side of Game Of Thrones, while Classic Who is treated like that crazy old uncle that no one wants to discuss at family reunions.

Well, there wouldn't be a Modern Who without Classic Who. Classic paved the way, and it deserves just as much respect as Modern does.

The same applies for Trek. Without the shows of the Gene Roddenberry/Rick Berman Eras Of Blessed Memory, there would be no Modern Trek.

Of course, the only reason Nichelle is getting a mention is because she died.

I too will be skipping this.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Friday, August 19, 2022 - 12:25 am:

I think we're reading things the same way Tim.

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Friday, August 19, 2022 - 4:12 pm:

I'll be skipping this as well. Reason being is that I don't subscribe. In the meantime, here's more on the Nichelle Nichols tribute.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, August 20, 2022 - 5:21 am:

I don't have Paramount + either.

I'm not even sure it's available in Canada.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Saturday, August 20, 2022 - 6:48 am:

Tim-- your last post didn't feel right to me so I reread the ad above.

First off(you need to read carefully) it only claims to feature every modern installment in the franchise.

Could there be a future reveal that they plan another event for everyone else??

They also imply that it will be available on some cable streamers(is that the right term?) for those without access to Paramount+.

I would expect it to be behind at least a pay wall- I can't see them giving anything away.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, August 21, 2022 - 5:11 am:

Well, either way, I have no intention of paying just to see this drivel.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Sunday, August 21, 2022 - 8:05 pm:

"..which will feature every modern installment in the franchise:"
That's what pissed me off so much. I noticed that, too, and to call it 'Star Trek Day', but only focus on shows from just the past 5 years, and ignore everything from 1966 to 2016 is just plain dumb.
Also...
"..will "unite iconic cast members from the television series."
'Iconic'? 'ICONIC'?!?!?! Just who from these modern series could possibly be considered 'iconic'?! Shatner, Stewart, Brooks, Mulgrew, Bakula...THOSE are icons! Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Hurd, Ethan Peck, Brett Gray...NOT icons!

Imagine your favourite sports team has a day celebrating the team, but only focuses on the past 5 seasons, and ignores everything that was accomplished for the previous 51 seasons! DUH!
I'm predicting that whatever Paramount+ is showing on September 8, The Weather Network will get better ratings! :-)

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, August 22, 2022 - 5:23 am:

What he said.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Monday, August 22, 2022 - 1:46 pm:

In Syracuse we don't celebrate our sports teams- we hide our heads an try to forget the last season.

At least that's what I do.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 - 5:27 am:

They want to pretend that the Gene Roddenberry/Rick Berman Eras Of Blessed Memory don't exist.

They will fail.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 - 6:38 am:

Don't blame them unless you are sure.

They may not remember that Gene Roddenberry even existed.

Although I'm not sure that's any better.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 - 5:28 am:

That too.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 - 7:09 pm:

Iconic, I-shmonic! I had to look up those names on imdb.com, because the various series's casts are unknowns to me and a large portion of Trek fandom. Back in the day I could recall names like Dorn, and Spiner, and Shimmerman, and Picardo, and Trineer, and on and on, as I watched more and more episodes.
I don't know, and don't want to know today's casts.
(Although out of respect for your approval of 'Strange New Worlds' I didn't mention Anson Mount as Captain Pike, one of the very few things today's producers seemingly have gotten right.)

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, August 25, 2022 - 5:30 am:

Strange New Worlds is the only modern Trek show that I've liked.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Thursday, August 25, 2022 - 12:05 pm:

Discovery isn't that bad if you forget that it's supposed to be Star Trek- as Star Trek, not so much.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Friday, August 26, 2022 - 5:39 pm:

Naw. I can't get over how Burnham is so great at everything she does, and how every single crew member on the Discovery is so unlikable (to me).

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Friday, August 26, 2022 - 6:05 pm:

Wow-- do we have different opinions.

I remember Burnham as messing up almost everything that she does.

While I agree about the main characters, I feel that the guest stars do much to make up for it

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, September 06, 2022 - 3:39 pm:

Well, if Diktor Von Doomcock's* source is correct, this whole Star Trek Day was Bad Robot's way of trying to get new investors to waste money on Kurtzman's "Star Trek".

* Overlord DVD on YouTube. I didn't post a link since Doomcock tends to use "colorful metaphors" which might not be to everyone's taste.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Tuesday, September 06, 2022 - 6:01 pm:

I made my own 'Star Trek Day' yesterday and today. Yesterday I watched 'The Man Trap' and today was 'The Menagerie'
You know...
...actual, real, 100 %, non-imitation, non-rip-off Star Trek.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, September 08, 2022 - 5:01 am:

Happy Real Star Trek Day!

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Thursday, September 08, 2022 - 11:06 am:

Pass the Romulan Ale and the put everything on my Mugato burger!

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, September 10, 2022 - 5:00 am:

The death of the Queen made me not feel like celebrating this year.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Saturday, September 10, 2022 - 12:08 pm:

These things keep happening to me and my family, just through coincidence.
My Mom was born June 6, 1923; 21 years later it's the D-Day invasion of Normandy during World War II.
My wife was born November 23, 1958; 5 years later Kennedy is killed on that date.
My wife and I were married September 9, 1989; 13 years and 2 days later, the Twin Towers collapsed.
And now we can associate Star Trek's anniversary with Elizabeth's death.

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Saturday, September 10, 2022 - 12:15 pm:

Just coincidences. I was born on april 26 1959, and exactly 27 years later Chernobyl exploded, and Lucille Ball died three years after that. Coincidences.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, September 11, 2022 - 5:01 am:

Kennedy was killed on November 22nd, not the 23rd, Steve.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Sunday, September 11, 2022 - 5:44 pm:

Oops.
Anyways, yes, I know they're coincidences, but they still happened near birthdays and my anniversary, and none of them are things one would want to associate with a 'special day'.
On the other end of the spectrum, I had a friend who was born December 26 and another that was born December 20-- way too close to Christmas.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, September 12, 2022 - 5:10 am:

November 23rd is the start day of a certain British science fiction show. Said show started the day after Kennedy was killed.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Monday, September 12, 2022 - 3:05 pm:

I could have sworn it was the same day. And that's even after all the times I actually READ 'November 22' or heard it on TV! Weird.
Must be my own 'Mandela Effect'.

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Friday, November 04, 2022 - 3:10 pm:

I could not find a better place to put this, so I'm putting it here. Both TOS and DS9 will be made available on the freeé, ad supported site Pluto TV. Next Gen was running there, I'm not sure if it still is. More on that here.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, November 05, 2022 - 5:20 am:

A site called Pluto.

Ironic.
