Only four "redshirts" die in the first season, and only six in the third season. The second season has far more.
In the series as a whole we see far more redshirts than gold and blue, and the vast majority of the redshirts survive their appearances. Proportionally, more gold and blue die.
Every Star Trek group I'm in keeps making this tired old joke about redshirts which is simply not based on the "reality" of the series at all.

Exactly! I occasionally make comments there about it, but I know it will do no good. I was tired of the redshirt "joke" in the Eighties, but it just continues. Much like the myth that Kirk automatically tries to bed every woman he meets which a casual viewing of the series refutes.
