Did anyone else catch A&E's Biography of Leonard Nimoy on "Out of this World" week?
Ah, phooey! I meant to watch that!
Was it good?
Whatever happened to his career as a successful director?
Hey! Want to know something interesting? I'm related to Leonard Nimoy by marriage. He's my grandmother's brother's wife's cousin. At least, I'm sort of related to him. I am NOT lying.
But you must admit, that is a VERY tenuous link...
"Lone Star, I was your father's brother's uncle's college roomate"
"So, what does that make us?"
"Absolutely nothing, which is what you are about to become."

"Evil will always triumph over good, because good is dumb!"
Indeed, very tenuous, but it's still interesting.
TRIVIA: Nimoy almost left the show after the end of the 1st season...and would have been replaced by Mark Lenard.
Read "Inside Star Trek" for that and oodles more priceless goodies.
Mr. Nimoy will be 70 on March 26. God bless you.
But I didn't sneeze!
Happy 71st Birthday, Mr. Nimoy.
Anyone know the Vulcan version of Happy Birthday?
Latest news on Nimoy is that The Federation is angry at him:The Greater Jewish Federation of Seattle that is.It appears that there is some
question over the book of photos he published
entitled SHEKINA,that Nimoy in his own words says
"Reflects the feminine aspect of God."
Nimoy admits that some of the photos might be taken as offensive by some people but that he had
talked it over with the leadership of the GJFS beforehand.
The GJFS disagrees and disinvited Nimoy to be their guest of honor at a recent celebration.
This is from an article appearing at the back of
yesterday's Region in the Spokesman Review.
The article mentions that Nimoy grew up in a
Orthodox Jewish home, but now is a member of the
Reformed Jewish denomination.
Today I saw Leonard Nimoy LIVE in Rosemont, ILL. at a Star Trek Convention.
He was a very funny person to listen to. I really enjoyed listening to him speak. He appeared to be in good health & good spirits.
Almost every seat was full & the crowd gave him several standing ovations. He even did the Vulcan Salute for us.
Happy belated 75th birthday, Mr. Nimoy.
CHECK THIS OUT RIGHT NOW!!!

I bet this is one of those things Nimoy would probably like to forget ever happened.
Hey Tom, do you know Borders in Sand City ca?

Tom -Be at the Borders front door so I can spot ya.I'll ask anyone there if its you.I'll ask if you are Tom.

Beam me up Spockky! I might be late or already there.,depends on the traffic.
From what I've read, according to William Shatner's new autobiography, Up Till Now, Mr. Nimoy was an alcoholic during production of TOS. I don't think even Nimoy mentioned this in his two books.
Interesting that Shatner's never mentioned it in his previous books. As a matter of fact, this is something that has not been mentioned in any previous bio or books on TOS. Wonder what prompted Shat to make this public? Did he and Nimoy have a falling out? Wonder how Leonard Nimoy feels about it?
"Live long and prosper."
Nimoy mentioned his alcoholism in "Mind Meld"
Given Nimoy's age... I doubt he really cares what any gossip column might say about him now that Shatner has brought the topic up again.
Sounds like Shatner is just out to make more money by blabbing about "the dark secrets of Star Trek".
Most people seem to enjoy reading about scandals, so he'll capitalise on that "dirt" by writing a book about the "dirt" surrounding Star Trek
Perhaps he'll reveal who raped Grace Lee Whitney
was it a klingon? perhaps a romulan plot?
i had no idea that such violence went on with the cast...
Mr. Nimoy has come out of his acting retirement. He'll play a character named "Bell" in the season finale of JJ Abrams Fringe. The character may make semi-regular appearances if Fringe goes for a second season.
He's retiring for good from Star Trek, acting and conventions.
He'll be in Chicago in October. I'm planning to be there!
Hmmm, I wonder who will be FRINGE SPOILER ALERT: dying in the season finale. What a head scratcher.
Nimoy visited Vulcan for the first time on Friday, April 23. The town had him in a parade, and he unveiled a bust of Spock. The mayor was dressed and costumed as a Vulcan, as were most of the townspeople.
Well, I never really chose to talk about this before, but it is in fact the absolute truth that Nimoy was OK with Spock being killed. He was just plain sick of the role and did not want to become typecast. As proof, his first autobiography from the 70s was called "I Am Not Spock".
I also know that Harve Bennett and Nicolas Meyer were the first to suggest that Spock should be killed, which happened in The Wrath Of Khan. And I know this to be true that Nimoy was totally OK with that decision. At least he was at the time.
Because less than two years later, Nimoy had second thoughts and directed the third film where Spock returns. Apparently he finally figured out which side his bread was buttered on, so to speak.
And as a result, his second autobiography "I Am Spock" came out in the 90s. And all was right with the world once again.
No real nitpicks here, just some foor for thought.
Sorry, "food" for thought.
I wasn't sure whether to post this here, over in the Commercials board, or on the Spock board...

"Technically we're not inside yet." I won't say anything else, to avoid spoilering anyone who's about to watch the video, but that is a classic moment! Kudos to both of them for having such fun with this ad.
Leonard Nimoy has been diagnosed with COPD http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/06/leonard-nimoy-lung-disease-smoking_n_4741076.html
Here's a page from the "Star Trek Prop Authority", with pictures, showing Fred Phillips putting Spock ears on Leonard Nimoy. The process took 75 minutes daily; IIRC, Nimoy was in the makeup chair by 7 a.m. Also, I think he got his breakfast while in the chair; I hope the studio paid for it.
Leonard Nimoy has been diagnosed with COPD
same disease that killed Shirley Temple.
Gary Lockwood claims that he was the one who suggested casting Leonard Nimoy as Spock to Gene Roddenberry. Bulls..t...or not? You can decide here.
A sad moment in Trek history: Mr. Nimoy passed away today, at home. He was 83. More here.
RIP Mr. Nimoy. You were a gentleman in every sense of the word.
"Spock is definitely one of my best friends. When I put on those ears, it's not like just another day. When I become Spock, that day becomes something special," he told Starlog in 1989.
He wasn't the only one who thought this I'm sure. RIP indeed
He lived long and prospered.
RIP Mr. Nimoy
Spock was my boyhood hero next to George oh my.
may he live long and prosper.
I count myself very lucky to have seen him twice at two conventions.
What a class act he was.
I saw Mr. Nimoy at what I think was his first convention appearance, way back in February of 1974 in New York. It was an unscheduled visit; he wanted to address the crowd.
According to this, the jackasses at the Westboro Baptist Church were set to picket Mr. Nimoy's funeral. But, they couldn't find out where it was being held. Thank heaven for small favors.
I suspect that a Jewish cemetary wouldn't let them in, either.
If you haven't seen it, here is the Heineken ad from the mid-1970's that got Mr. Nimoy so mad, he sued Paramount, and almost stayed away from TMP. Thanks to the blog "My Star Trek Scrapbook" for it.
Adam Nimoy is producing a documentary about his father, and their relationship. Which was strained at one point. You can read more about that here.
Sounds interesting.
I believe it will be called "For the Love of Spock". And no, for once I'm serious.
An hour long documentary about Mr. Nimoy, titled Remembering Leonard Nimoy, is making the rounds of PBS stations this month. It doesn't focus a lot on Star Trek but does devote a lot of its time to Nimoy's smoking and his eventual COPD diagnosis. The doc also noted that Nimoy's favorite song was Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer".
Mr. Nimoy quit smoking in the early 1980's, sadly, he was already past the point of no return.
COPD is a progressive thing. The older you get, the worse it gets.
COPD also killed Shirley Temple. The Good Ship Lollipop couldn't save her from the Grim Reaper...
Probably for the same reason, like Nr. Nimoy, she smoked.
Of course, when they both started, it wasn't generally known how bad cigarettes were.
I cringe every time I see old footage in a movie or TV show and a DOCTOR is smoking!
Not to mention seeing those Twilight Zone intros in which Rod Serling is holding a lit cigarette (and smoking no doubt contributed to his untimely death at just 50). Can you imagine a TV show doing something like that today?
They really didn't know any better back then, did they?
The tobacco companies knew better, but they did their best to keep it out of public knowledge, it would have been bad for their profits.
Sad but true.
Leonard Nimoy's widow Susan appears in an anti-smoking PSA in conjunction with the CDC. More here. The tobacco companies knew better, but they did their best to keep it out of public knowledge, it would have been bad for their profits.
quote:
Not to mention the tobacco companies had Congress in their pockets; with the help of the federal government, they resisted putting warning labels on cigarette packs for decades. And when they did get around to it, the warnings were quite mild. It was only in recent years that the very harsh warnings were put on cigarette packs. Too late for Mr. Nimoy, though.
Sad, but true.
Mr. Nimoy had actually stopped smoking in the early 1980's, but by then the damage was done.
It just took thirty years to finally kill him
This article postulates that Bonanza's David Canary was in talks to replace Leonard Nimoy for season two; Nimoy was in the middle of a contract dispute, and wanted more $$$ to play Spock.
This would not the the last time such a dispute would happen. Mr. Nimoy almost didn't take part in the first movie because of one.
Mr. Nimoy will get a major honor in his hometown of Boston, in the form of a twenty foot statue. (I always thought Nimoy, and therefore Spock, were larger than life.) More here.
So, a statue of the giant Spock clone from TAS: The Infinite Vulcan.
Pretty cool.
