Is the first name of Uhura canon?
Lt. Uhura is my favorite character from Star Trek: Original Series; I also think she is one of
Star Trek's missed opportunities. I hate the way
that NBC deluted the Original Series! Originally, Uhura was supposed to have a much bigger role in the series even getting a number of
shows that focused on her as the main character, and she was the original "third officer" of the original Enterprise. Uhura was also orignally going to be a protege of Spock, particularly in the areas of computer science. I'm glad that there is fan fiction and official Star Trek novels that give Uhura the justice that she deserves. Kudos to Nichells Nichols that did an excellant job with what she was given to work with.
I don't think that it is canon. It should be, and it's a nice idea, and all the novel writers have agreed that it is, but they have not yet said it onscreen.
It does apperar on her service record in Willam Shatner's Star Trek memories.
Matthew - not all of the writers agreed on it. Some of them decided her name was Penda Uhura. Eventually the Nyota camp won out.
Similarly, before Sulu's first name was canonized in Star Trek VI, there were variant versions of his name too. It was Hikaru vs. ... wait for it ... George!
It is supposedly canon since Paramount approved it for the action figure.
Paramount also approved it for The Learning Channel's special on Star Trek, "A Captain's Log," which aired about a year ago.
I thought she was listed in credits somewhere (I can't remember where) as "Nyota Uhura"...
I just saw "Mirror Mirror" today, and I just wanted to comment on Uhura in this episode. Compared to most of the female characters during the time of this series, Uhura really was kind of tough. Usually a female will stand off to the side during a fight, watching the men fight it out. During the fight scene in the sickbay, While Kirk, McCoy, and Scotty tried to subdue Mirror Spock, Uhura did more than just stand aside. She even fearlessly dove in when the others were down, and try to strangle him. She didn't even scream when she thrown down to the ground. Not only that, she managed to get a weapon for Kirk to subdue Spock, and she quickly and smartly grabbed the weapon from the Captain's woman. Go Uhura!!!
But she had a really bad stunt double!
Uhura's singing abilities shine in:
"Charlie X"
"Conscience of the King"
"The Changling"
I'm not sure if she was the one singing
in Star Trek V....if she was, it was good too.
I love those legs too!
There are several episodes in which Uhura
has her left leg stretched way, WAY out as she sits at her station. My reaction? MMMMMMMM!
I heard that they had another person singing for her in Star Trek V, I don't know why.
I don't either, because she has a wonderful singing voice. Heard her firsthand in Vegas last year at the 35th ST Con.
Here is a complete list of the episodes that has Uhura missing:
"The Enemy Within" (Yet her voice is heard anyway)
"Devil in the Dark"
"Wolf in The Fold"
"The Doomsday Machine"
"The Apple"
"The Empath"
"The Paradise Syndrome" (Yet they show a rehashed clip of her)
"The Way to Eden"
"Turnabout Intruder"
How about "All Our Yesterdays?"
D'oh! You're right!
Actually, I think she was missing in "Miri," as well.
Yes, she was missing in "Miri" - Farrell was the communications officer in that epiosde.
How did I miss that?
You're right, of course.
Anyway...her first episode was "The Corbomite Manuver", her last episode was "The Savage Curtain"
In Space Seed, she was slapped by one of Khan's men (Meaning: It must have really hurt!) and she just gave her attacker a mean stare.
Wow, nobody's posted here in years!
Here's an observation:
"I'll be back, though it take forever..."
Um, a lot of folks wouldn't be too happy about waiting that long. I wonder why she chose that song?
It doesn't sound real hopeful and encouraging, waiting forever...or does nobody else care?
What do people think of her portrayal in the newest movie?
Regarding the discussion of Uhura's first tame at the top of the page. XI makes her name cannon. If that movie is cannon.
Nichelle Nicols will always be Uhura to me.
If TPTB had made the Enterprise communications officer a man (like Lloyd Haynes in "Where No Man...") I would hope that they would have named him Ken. Then Kirk could say, in just about every episode....hold on...wait for it..."What's the Frequency, Kenneth,?"
The novels and comics gave Uhura the first name "Nyota" long before JJ Abrams did.
"Nyota" is Swahili for star. Kind of fitting, right?
