Family Ties

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Farscape: Season One: Family Ties
“It’s a Jerry Springer kind of family.”

Rygel steals a pod and flies to Crais’ carrier, offering Moya, her child and the crew in return for his freedom. John proposes that the only solution to being captured is for someone to fly a pod bearing explosives into the carrier.
Crais tells Rygel that, as soon as Moya has been captured, Scorpius will have Rygel executed to show what he thinks of traitors. Shortly after, Rygel returns to Moya, bringing Crais with him. Crais has told Scorpius that he will go to Moya’s crew under a flag of truce to persuade them to surrender – in reality he has asked Rygel for asylum. He helps the crew plan their escape, advising them to attack the Gammak base instead of the carrier, but recommending that John ought to be on board the pod because of Scorpius’ obsession with him.
The Peacekeepers declare Crais irrevocably contaminated; Scorpius is given full control of the attempt to capture or destroy Moya and her crew.
John and D’Argo take the pod loaded with explosives towards the base; Scorpius orders that they must be taken alive. John and D’Argo prime the explosives and jump into space before the pod hits the planet and explodes (John’s wearing a spacesuit and D’Argo can survive in vacuum for about a quarter of an arn). Aeryn, flying nearby in her prowler, can’t pick them up immediately because there are too many enemy prowlers around.
Crais sneaks on board the baby Leviathan – named Talyn after Aeryn’s father – and takes him into the asteroid field, away from Moya who has no choice but to starburst to safety.
As Aeryn struggles to reach the men stranded in space, D’Argo loses consciousness …

John’s (and our) translator microbes have a touch of Universal Translator malfunction – when Dargo talks to Rygel as the latter is escaping towards Scorpius and Crais, he speaks in his own language and Chiana has to translate for John’s benefit. Did Gigi not have enough lines in this episode, so they had to write that bit in specially for her?! In any case, Rygel’s microbes needed to be working properly, otherwise Dargo’s threat would be a bit of a waste of time as Rygel wouldn’t understand what he was saying either!
