Farscape: F.A.Q.

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Farscape: The Clam Shell - aka the Sink: Farscape: F.A.Q.
I've had a lot of people come up to me and say: "Farscape is confusing! What's it all about?"

Well my friends, I'm here to explain it to you. (Keep in mind. There are some eps that I haven't seen so I don't know EVERYTHING)

Q: These Peacekeeper people are human!? What's the deal?
A: They're not human. They're Sebaceans. While Sebaceans and Humans look similar on the outside, they're different on the inside. Sebaceans have superior eyesight, they have a low tolerance for heat, and most have a really evil personality.

Q: What's with that guy in the black leather? That is the strangest outfit I've ever seen!
A: That is Scorpius. He's the former commander of the Gammak Base. He wears the leather because he's got an EXTREMELY low tolerance for any heat at all. That black suit keeps him cool. Those glowing things on his head have a cooling rod inside. (It's not as wacky as it sounds)

Q: Why is this Scorpius guy after Crichton?
A: In one episode, a group of aliens called "The Ancients" gave Crichton the secret to creating wormhole technology. Unfortunately, they stuck it deep in the recesses of his mind so that it would only serve as a guide. Scorpius found out about this when he used his Aurora Chair (a mindreading device) on Crichton.

Q: What kind of actors play that Pilot and Rygel?
A: Those are VERY sophisticated puppets created by Jim Henson's company. It's sometimes hard to remember that they're not real. (See "The Way They Weren't" for a prime example)

Q: Who is Crais?
A: Captain Bailar Crais is the "insane military commander" mentioned in the opening monologue. When Crichton got shot through the wormhole, he came out in the middle of a battle and inadvertently killed Crais's brother. This didn't go over too well with Crais so he wants Crichton to pay.

Q: But I just watched the most recent episode and it looked liked he was one of the good guys.
A: In the season two premiere, Moya (the living ship) gave birth to her son Talyn. Crais took control of Talyn. Over time, Crais became very attached to Talyn and now Crais is starting to lighten up a little.

Q: What's with the blue lady?
A: That would be Delvian High Priestess Pa'u Zotoh Zhann. She's actually a plant-based lifeform (however unlikely that may sound). Zhaan has reached the 10th Plateau in the Delvian Seek, a search for perfect understanding and unity with all life. She also has some medical expertise.

Q: Who's the green chick?
A: Every good scifi series has a green chick. Her name is Chiana. Chiana ran away from a very regimented society that viewed her natural bent for independent thinking as a threat -- it wanted to reprogram her. She escaped to experience freedom and adventure in the vastness of the universe, but, just like everyone else on Moya, she's a fugitive.

Q: Why does Crichton keep going insane in every episode?
A: Actually, this only happens in the second season. While in Scorpie's Aurora Chair, Scorpius stuck a chip in Crichton's head in order find the wormhole stuff. Unfortunately, it makes Crichton go all nuts. In the second season cliffhanger, Crichton tries to get it out but Scorpius intervenes. We have yet to see what happens with this.

Q: How come England gets new episodes before the U.S.?
A: I don't have a clue but it makes my life harder since I have to find episode titles well in advance so that they can discuss new episodes. I'm hoping that they're new season begins on March 16 like it does here.

Q: Why is it called Farscape?
A: Crichton got to a distant part of the universe when he was testing a new kind of shuttle. This shuttle was called Farscape-1. It's Crichton's favorite ship even though it's somewhat archaic by the galaxy's standards. I don't really know why they named the show after Crichton's ship. Probably because it sounds cool.

Q: What is the undesirable element.
A: Some things will have to remain a mystery. (Bwa ha ha)

Q: Why do have to be such an !@#$%$###@?
A: I don't need this! See if I ever help you again?

Q: Why are you having an argument with yourself?
A: Too much time in front of the computer can do that.

See ya later

Wait a second...

I thought Chiana was black and white (at least, that's how she looks on my t.v.). Is she really green?

By The Undesirable Element on Monday, March 05, 2001 - 1:34 pm:

She looks green to me.

Maybe MY TV is screwed up.

By cstadulis on Monday, March 05, 2001 - 2:31 pm:

I checked a couple of Farscape images with Chiana in them and she looked pretty white and black to me. Maybe she has a green tinge?

By Douglas Nicol on Saturday, March 17, 2001 - 8:40 am:

She looks sort of white and black on my DVD's. And my TV is relatively new as well.

By The Undesirable Element on Saturday, March 17, 2001 - 12:52 pm:

Well, that Farscape special that was on before the season premiere proved that she is indeed gray. Sorry for the screw up.

Has it ever been cleared up whether Crichton is in another Galaxy, a parallel universe or another part of the Milky Way Galaxy? Hurry up and show series 3 please BBC, I am getting fed up of Will Smith.

By cstadulis on Saturday, April 07, 2001 - 11:37 am:

According to the new intro, John says he was tossed to "a distant part of the galaxy." I'm not sure, though, if he means the Milky Way or the universe.

Confederate bias showing?):)

Virginia Hey listed in the credits tonight,or
was I not paying attention?

Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan died in Self Inflicted Wounds, Part 2: "Wait For The Wheel"

Chiana has always looked kind of bluish-gray to me. Definitely not green.

Most of the episodes air in the US first. It's only at the end of each season that the Brits catch up to and surpass us. They catch up because SFC insists on stringing out the season over a period of about 10 months.

Dialogue of the series seems to suggest that he is indeed in the Milky Way. In Incubator Scorpius told the Chip-Crichton that the Scarrans would take over the galaxy and eventually find Earth.

By Russ on Monday, December 01, 2003 - 8:18 pm:

Also, in "Into the Lions Den 1"....

SCORPIUS
Even without wormholes, Earth is reachable. At top speed...( whispers )Just over sixty cycles.

so, John's still in the Milky Way, just on the other side (the Trek equivalent of the Gamma Quadrant, perhaps?) and it seems from this info, that PK ships are potentially faster than Federation ships

anyone have an idea of how the Hetch drive and Starburst technology compares to Trek's Warp based technology, speedwise?

As we learned in a later episode,or perhaps it was the miniseries,The Peacekeepers are indeed humans. They were abducted from Earth when the human race was primitive & then genetically altered for the purposes of an alien race to be a true peace keeping force in the galaxy. But over the centuries they devolved into the brutal & harsh warrior system the we come to know from the pilot episode.
