Self-Inflicted Wounds, Part 2: "Wait For the Wheel"

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Farscape: Season Three: Self-Inflicted Wounds, Part 2: "Wait For the Wheel"
"Welcome aboard the Federation Starship S.S. Buttcrack."
-- yet another reference to our pals in the Delta Quadrant. (just kidding friends)

Our story continues with Crichton hanging off of a walkway with the wormhole serpent just above him. John shoots the creature and it flees. The crew discovers some blood on the deck. But it's the blood of one of Neeyala's crew. Crichton didn't see anyone so he is genuinely confused. Turns out what these people have been hiding is that they have a cloaking device that can turn individual people invisible. They're using this thing to secretly sabotage Moya since she wasn't as badly damaged as it was originally assumed.
So here is the science of it. When this device that Neeyala has is fully charged, both ships will be forced apart. Whatever ship is perfectly aligned with be thrown to safety. The other will be destroyed. Once the crew discovers the sabotage, they are more determined than ever to help Moya. They believe that initiating starburst just after separation will align them correctly. In order to do this, they have to do some technical stuff, wake up Pilot, battle the wormhole serpent, and keep Neeyala from trying to save her own ship.
Then there's that Jool character who keeps screaming. Her screams also weaken metal. Unfortunatly for the crew, they used metal handcuffs to restrain Neeyala.
Neeyala scares Jool on several occasions in order to make her scream. While this is unpleasant for us, it weakens the handcuffs.
Meanwhile, our invisible friend is running around the ship doing evil things. D'Argo kills him but not before the invisible man shoots a poisoned needle at Chiana. (Ah yes, these things shoot poisoned needles out of their ears too)
Zhann creates an antidote and saves Chiana.
Neeyala escapes. Jool screams. Crichton arrives to battle Neeyala. Neeyala shoots needles at Crichton but to no effect. Jool's screams seemed to have messed up the needles.
And then Zhann. Poor Zhann. She chooses to stay behind on Neeyala's ship and initiate the final commands. After a tender goodbye to everyone, she boards the ship and they separate. Moya gets out of the wormhole but Neeyala's ship is blasted into the wormhole wall. Poor Zhann. Poor Stark too since he looks like he's about to kill himself.
Oh yeah, they electocuted that serpent thing too with that alien ship they have in their landing bay.

COMMENTS:
>> How many people can they kill off anyway?
>> I really dislike Jool
>> The Three Stooges! Gotta love em. Nyuk Nyuk.
>> RYGEL: "Goodbye you big, beautiful, blue bi+ch."
>> I liked Zhann. She was always the voice of reason and serenity even in the worst of times. I don't like Jool as a replacement.
>> Was it just me or was there a reflection of Zhann in one of the mirrors just after her death? (I did watch this one late at night)
>> Good episode all around. Eliminated a lot of my objections about Part 1.

NITS:
>> Wormholes carry things vast distances. So when Moya exits the thing, should they be thousands of lightyears from where they were? Or do these wormholes somehow travel in circles?
>> Again, a bag of fertilizer could have made all the difference in this episode.
>> A better choice to send in the ship would have been that screaming whore Jool. What a bi+ch.
>> Neeyala's plan to sabotage Moya was pretty lousy. They had already decided at the end of the last episode to abandon Moya. By keeping up the sabotage, they simply make it easier for someone to eventually find them out.

NEXT WEEK: Farscape's first real time travel story.

O.K., what is this, let's-see-how-many-main-characters-we-can-kill-in-one-season year for Farscape? Jeez, first Aeryn and now Zhaan.

Of course, I don't think she's really gone, but we'll see. And if Jool is her replacement, I think I may scream and melt some metal myself. Ugh! If she does stay on, she better get a better costume. That whole black leather, Victorian collar thing has already gotten very old.

Over all, an o.k. ep and Zhaan's sacrifice at the end was done very nicely. Her speech and good-byes to the crew were very touching. And the special effect when Neeyala's ship is destroyed and Zhaan gently disapears into the wormhole was really good.

So, any bets as to how long it takes for Stark to go nutso? I don't know if he's going to last the season. (of course, the way things are going, most of the crew may be dead before the whole thing is finished!)

Nits: How exactly did they kill that flying-snake thing? Did the forcefield kill it or was it cut in half or what? I really couldn't figure it out. Also, just how many of Neeyala's crew survived the initial crash? I got the feeling there were more than just those three (Neeyala, the green guy and that other girl). I could be wrong, though.

Love John's line: So another group of pissed off aliens are going to be hunting us down? (or something like that)

Aw, man, are TPTB succumbing to the 13-18 year-old-male mentality now? They take out one of the most complex, wonderful characters on sci-fi TV today, and replace it with some bubble-chested teenie-bopper who's sole contribution is to annoy the living FRELL out of everyone, we viewers most of all!

If they don't find a way to ditch the Red Screamer and bring back Virginia Hey, I am seriously thinking about not watching the episodes until I know Jool won't be featured (much).

By The Maquis Mauler on Tuesday, August 28, 2001 - 3:13 pm:

Take it easy Anonymous. She hasn't been featured in any episodes yet. She's more of a supporting character along the lines of what Crais or Scorpius used to be back in previous seasons. She's not even in the opening credits.

I'm sitting here trying to sort things out in my mind about this episode, so much went on. However, Once again Farscape tops itself. If the rest of season 3 is like this then Farscape should /easily/ win some sort award. It deserves it. :)

As for Zahnn...I think she has gone. I didn't think they'd get rid of Pilot and Moya but as Callie said in the Pt1 on board I think Farscapes got enough guts to loose someone like Zahnn. Not that I don't wish she /will/ come back. I have to agree with some of Anons comments. I do have to say that I did actually get quite teary myself at the whole leaving speech Zahnn made. One of the few shows that's been able to do that to me. The other was Tashas demise on ST:TNG.

For the flying snake thing…I think it was a bit of both C, John switched on the force field and cut it in half.

>> Neeyala's plan to sabotage Moya was pretty lousy. They had already decided at the end of the last episode to abandon Moya. By keeping up the sabotage, they simply make it easier for someone to eventually find them out.

I'm trying hard to remember what actually went on in that ep again, for various reasons, but didn't they think at the last moment that Pilot and Moya could be saved?

>>Love John's line: So another group of pissed off aliens are going to be hunting us down? (or something like that)

Steeerike one for this seasons new enemies.

Along with Cs fave John line I have to side with TUE and go with the "Welcome to the USS Butt Crack!" line. I was unfortunate enough to have a mouthful of drink at the time…..not a pleasant experience. :)

Oh..and the theme tune is starting to grow on me. I quite like it now.

I shall end my rantings here.

Something to add after all.

Just a comment on my theory as to why Jool didn't croak the second she got out the stasis pod. John say it all..she may of been a "Bonus" prize. I'm curious as to everyones reaction to Jool as well. I seem to remember a similar thing to Chiana when she first came on board. I suspect the writers have plans so hopefully she'll grow on us like Chiana and, in my case, the new theme tune. :)

By Callie Sullivan on Tuesday, September 18, 2001 - 3:27 am:

I won't make any major comments until I've watched this episode again because, like the first part, it was hard work keeping up and I'm sure I missed several bits. But a few immediate thoughts.

SK beat me to the comment that the new theme tune's starting to grow.

The music in this episode was very Babylon 5-ish at times, which for me added to the emotional impact.

Again great acting from a muppet: Pilot's reactions as Aeryn kicked him awake were very convincing.

Did anyone else feel seasick by the end of the episode? The constant swaying of the camera helped with the mood but made me quite dizzy by the end!

Scorpy in a tux - oh my ...

Typical BBC – by showing Farscape at 6.45 p.m. they think they have no choice but to edit. We certainly didn’t get the “you big beautiful itch-bay” from Rigel that other countries did! (but I’m sure I’ve heard the word used in episodes of Buffy which is shown at exactly the same time of day). Was there also some swearing or something while Aeryn and John were struggling to steer Moya immediately after the two ships separated? There seemed to be a strange jump in the footage: one moment the two of them being thrown all over the bay while Moya careered through the wormhole, and then suddenly she was free and cruising normally.

I got the impression from the first episode of this pair that Jool’s hair only went red when she was angry rather than scared. In this episode, while Neeyala was attacking John and firing her spines at him, Jool was screaming in what I would have thought was fear rather than rage but her hair was red.

This episode still didn’t seem to explain why Neeyala’s crew had to die. I don’t mean the ones who were going invisible and running around Moya, but towards the end of Could’a Aeryn was talking to Neeyala about how all of her crew were going to die. I hoped that this episode would clear that up but either I missed it or the writers did (or that bit was edited by the BBC!).

Why did the alien guy become visible in the DRDs’ laser-type lights?

I’ll say it again: the music in part of this episode – when Aeryn dons a spacesuit and makes her way to Pilot’s den – was so similar to music from Babylon 5 that Christopher Franke, the composer of the latter, could probably sue for plagiarism! Not that I minded, as it was beautiful and made those scenes really special.

By SpottedKitty on Tuesday, April 02, 2002 - 11:26 am:

I suppose this gives credit to how well Farscape is written that I forgot this, but what about Neeyala's species? She supposedly put that Homing Beacon thing into Moyas skin and her species would track down Moya and sort them all out... yet over the course of season 3 we've never seen them again. What the heck happened to them and will we ever see them again?

See my last comment in "Dog With Two Bones" ...

Looked to me like John's beer bottle was empty at the end, but then again, it was only in his mind :)
