Revenging Angel

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Farscape: Season Three: Revenging Angel
"WORMHOLE! THIS WAY! ============>>"
-- Sign posted by animated D'Argo to a roadrunner type trap

PLOT SUMMARY:
D'Argo and John are fiddling with that ship they got back in "Suns and Lovers" when suddenly the thing goes berzerk. D'Argo flips out because he thinks Crichton is responsible. So he pushes him into some containers and puts Johnnie into a coma.
The ship wreaks havoc on Moya's systems and is set to self destruct (thus taking Moya with it) in less than an arn (that's about an hour for you human types). D'Argo's frustrated by the situation so in a moment of fury, he throws his qualta blade (that big golden sword of his) down into the depths of Pilot's chambers.
D'Argo and Jool are trying to figure out how to stop the ship from going kablooy when Jool reveals that she was fooling around with the ship's systems in an attempt to have something to talk about with D'Argo. She likes him. D'Argo softens a little. He mutters something in Luxan and the ship suddenly lights up. It reveals that it needs his qualta blade to give him control. WHOOPS! Guess he shouldn't have thrown it into the depths of Pilot's chambers after all. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Treasure hunt time. D'Argo takes the high road. Chiana gets the walking beams and Jool gets the bottom that's filled with alien bat guano. They find the blade in the guano and get it into the ship. The ship lights up all the way and D'Argo now has control. He shuts down the self destruct.
THE DAY IS SAVED. KALOO KALAY! But wait!? What about Crichton.

SECONDARY PLOT SUMMARY:
Crichton gets put into a coma. He's in his mind with Scorpius (remember, this Crichton didn't have the pleasure of meeting Jack last week) who wants him to take revenge on D'Argo for what he did to him. He goes on about all the other revenge he should do to his twin half as well. But he decides to focus on D'Argo. You see, there's a pseudo version of D'Argo in John's brain representing the hostility they have toward each other. Well, John took anger control management courses from Captain James T. Kirk (he says so later on. Scorpius says Kirk was a mad, womanizing, revenge-loving, gun-totin', alien butt kickin' lunatic. Not the sane, just, and even tempered person he claimed to be.). Well, John likes his version better and decides to run from his problems. He uses his mind to turn Harvey into a cartoon character (interesting one too). Then D'Argo is represented as a cartoon character. We get to see several Road Runner cartoons with D'Argo as Wile. E. Coyote and John as the RoadRunner. Of course D'Argo's plans always backfire and Crichton gets away. Throughout his coma, he gets advice from his mind's version of his friends on how to deal with D'Argo. The cartoons change accordingly.
Eventually, Crichton decides to pretend to take revenge on D'Argo but instead says that he never will and declares that he loves Aeryn. This brings him out of his coma. (I don't get it either, but just live and let live)

ANALYSIS:
>> This was one funny thing man. I didn't think it would be, but just the idea of D'Argo as the coyote was enough to get me rolling. The little touches like the "Wormhole, this way" sign or the "Free Bier and Pizza" instead of Free Bird Seed were the best.
>> I think we need to keep a running tally of Star Trek references on Farscape. Crichton compares himself to Kirk and cartoon D'Argo gets slammed by a cartoon Enterprise. There was the DRD Pike a few episodes back and the Starship Buttcrack comment back in Self Inflicted Wounds. Maybe it's an inside joke or something.
>> The actual real world plot was somewhat lacking. Well, so was the coma plot. In fact, plot wasn't a big factor in this episode. It was a laugh fest plain and simple with a few serious moments about D'Argo's depression. I like Chiana's and Jool's bickering though. Seems fitting somehow.
>> This is an episode that could ONLY be done on Farscape. Could you really see an animated Worf chasing Picard or an animated Mulder chasing an animated Scully or what have you.
>> Some will say that this was silly, but I say, It was funny as heck. I was raised on Looney Tunes and I say, if they made a Farscape Cartoon Show, I'd watch it.

NITS:
>> Why couldn't Pilot locate the qualta blade? They've been able to use Moya's sensors before? Were they damaged? I don't recall.
>> Why does the ship start out talking ancient Luxan but once the qualta blade is in, it starts talking normally? Does the qualta blade have some kind of translator?
>> Why is there bat guano at the bottom of Pilot's chambers? In "Losing Time" the starburst chamber was just below Pilot. It's how they got the aliens out of him.

NEXT WEEK: Aeryn says: "If I can come back from the dead, why can't anyone?"

The loony tunes bits were really rather funny.
The part where Toon D'Argo gets squashed by the
Toon Enterprise was probably the highlight!
Although the entire Aeryn as Jessica Rabbit
wan't bad either!!!!:)
(Great Aeryn/Jessica line:"Don't tell me,
I'm not bad,I'm just drawn that way;geez can't
you be original?")
I think Crichton enjoyed screwing with "Harvey"'s
head during the entire Looney Tune bit as a way
of getting the satisfaction of screwing around
with Scorpie, despite the fact Scorpie wan't there
in person to screw with!!!!!:)

Poor Jool though,D'Argo and Chiana are high and
try and she gets the bat manure to wade through;
at least she got the compensation of finding
D'Argo's sword for him!!!!!:)

Ah...who's gonna tell Aeryn she's been hanging
out with the clone?
She probably hopes John stops cloning around
for awhile to get serious!(HA!HA!:))

The sensors were damaged. That's why Pilot couldn't read the energy signature of the ship and tell when it would explode. (that's also why Chiana had to repair the DRD's. And, if I recall correctly, the DRD's restored minimal sensors)

>> Why does the ship start out talking ancient Luxan but once the qualta blade is in, it starts talking normally? Does the qualta blade have some kind of translator?

Well, Pilot had a DRD create a very rudimentary vocabulary of ancient Luxan, "program" some translator microbes, and then inject them into D'Argo. It seems that the translator microbes can adapt, so as the thing talked, perhaps they learned the language.

I think at one point Pilot said the droppings are from parasite-type critters that live in Moya. Moya uses the droppings somehow, which is why the creatures are allowed to stay. Also, I thought the droppings were in a trench of some sort, perhaps around the starburst chamber?

Did anyone catch what Jool's full name is? I thought at one point, Pilot called her something other than Jool. Is that her real name?

I really liked the cartoon bits of this episode. I would definately watch Farscape if it was a cartoon.

Whoooo boy. Just when you think it can't top themselves they do.
I was a tad worried when I heard that they were going to do a Toon version but as usual, I was proved wrong. I really gotta stop underestimating the writers. I really was dreading a “Worf chases Picard” style thing. Within the context of the show though it was downright hilarious. I’ve needed a good laugh of late and this did it for me. A lot of what I thought has already been said by both C and TUE so I'll just say that I agree with them both. :) Kinda makes this post pointless...but that’s just me.

Oh, yes! Lovely, lovely, lovely episode!! Especially as I nearly didn’t get to see it – my train was cancelled and I got home with literally seconds to spare; plus my video’s being really erratic at the moment and sometimes records the picture but no sound. Thankfully the earlier programme ran a minute or two late and gave me time to start the tape manually; and the sound recorded perfectly.

I loved it! I don’t think I’ve ever laughed out loud so much during a sci-fi show before – even Stargate SG-1 hasn’t ever been this hilarious! In particular Scorpius with corks in his ears and the “Ozme” 1000 ton weight dropping on him nearly gave me a heart attack from laughing so hard.

Nevertheless a couple of nits:

When D’Argo throws his qualtar blade away, Pilot calls it his “quelter” blade.

Scorpy calls Aeryn ‘Aryn’.

Claudia Black can’t sing! She goes off-key during ‘birthday’.

It’s only a shame we didn’t get to see more characters cartoonised.

By the way, in the middle of all the hilarity, did we all notice that Chiana showed her new psychic abilities again?

Ahhh, ain't broadband grand. :)
Since the DVD release is so far off and I've been wanting to see this ep again I've just recently downloaded this ep after trying for five days to find it...Its still in the top5 fave Farscape episodes. This one is just one of the few that shows how diverse the Farscape world can get and still hold things together nicely. I don't think there is /any/ other show out there that could pull an episode like this off.

SK! Nip over the SG-1 Sink, would you? There's a message for you from Douglas.

By Callie on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 3:53 am:

By the way, Kitty, if you find a way of downloading Season 4 episodes before we see them in Britain, please remember that I've always been your friend ... ;-)

By SpottedKitty on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 6:46 am:

Oh yeahs, I caught Douglas. I may not post alot these days but you don't get rid of me /that/ easily. =^_^=

As for Season4...*coughs* I dunno /what you mean. *whistles innocently*

Side note: I'm getting one of those nice Special Edition Farscape boxsets selling on Play.com. :)

By Douglas Nicol on Tuesday, September 03, 2002 - 4:12 pm:

This was a...unique episode. I wasn't sure this would work, but it did in that special Farscape way. Mind, I would like to have seen toon version of Jool and Chiana, and maybe even Pilot. :)
