Dog With Two Bones

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Farscape: Season Three: Dog With Two Bones
"Don't worry about me. I've never felt better."
-- Fantasy Aeryn's last words to John. (The same words that TalynJohn said to Aeryn back in "Icarus Abides")

PLOT SUMMARY:
Moya travels to a nebula that serves as a leviathan burial ground to bury Talyn's remains. John experiences hallucinations of what he thinks his life would be like with Aeryn back on Earth caused by a mysterious old woman (who was rescued from a life pod after the destruction of the command carrier). A mad leviathan is also at the nebula and refuses to let a PK hybrid ship be buried there so D'Argo blows it up. D'Argo, Rygel, Chiana, and Aeryn all leave Moya. John is in Farscape 1 reminiscing when Harvey appears and reveals the old woman's secret. Aeryn is pregnant. Moya is about to track Aeryn when a wormhole appears and sucks her in.

ANALYSIS:
What can I say? Complicated, very complicated, but an incredibly amazing cliffhanger! I give it a 9/10. A point off for the confusion of the dream sequences, but overall, very well done.

NITS:
1. How is Rygel going to get back to Hyneria? He has no ship. And I thought that Moya's pods were only short range vessels. I didn't think they could travel between star systems.

2. John says that he can't return to Earth because the Peacekeepers will follow him. First of all, they have the location of Earth. They don't need to follow John in order to find it. Second, Scorpius told John that he has no reason to go to Earth now.

3. In Crichton's dream, Aeryn's last words are "Don't worry about me. I've never felt better." These are TalynCrichton's last words in "Icarus Abides". Truly a great line to use, but remember that this is MoyaCrichton's mind. He shouldn't know what TalynCrichton's last words were. (Coincidence perhaps?)

NEXT TIME:
Crichton takes refuge on an ancient leviathan, but mercinaries storm the ship looking for a valuable component.

SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE UNDESIRABLE ELEMENT:
This will be my last synopsis and analysis as moderator. As of now, I am turning complete control of the board over to Callie Sullivan. I must thank her again for taking on this responsibility. And thank you all for being wonderful patrons of this board. I've never had any trouble whatsoever. I'll still be a regular at Nitcentral, just not a moderator. Thank you for a great experience, though.

Farscapeworld.com is reporting that this episode will be titled "A Dog With Two Bones".

By Merat on Monday, December 31, 2001 - 10:53 am:

So, who do you think will be making the big choice? (My take on the "two bones" bit) And what will it be?

By SpottedKitty on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 - 2:44 pm:

Title is correct...

I'm quite surprised with this ep. I wasn't expecting much after the last ep but, yeahs, I liked it.

Theres our indication that Talyn should be dead. OK, there wasn't /much/ there but it deffiently looked like there was one of his (for want of a better word) "tails" in the debris.

Odd how Chi had "human" legs when she was jumping over the table in the bloodbath. Was it ment to symbolise something? Or did they just not have the money left? :)
Now....what do we plan to do to the writers if they get out of this by using a "JR" plot device? ^_^

Good to see that Braxton knows nothing!! (see comments for the previous episode) This was a great episode – far better than I’d hoped or imagined, with a real “bloody hell!” cliffhanger ending.

Quote of the episode: “Respect, my tiny shiny heiney.”

How did the mad Leviathan know about Talyn? There was no indication that Moya had communicated with it before then.

Who’s Betty Crocker?

That’s one fearsome ship D’argo has! But has he used its weapons system before? Otherwise how did he know that they’d be safe flying straight into the debris – or rather, lack of debris? Unless he knew of the total destruction which the ship was capable of, continuing to fly towards the Leviathan after firing at it would have been really risky as they could have been hit by flying debris.

OK, so it was all in John’s mind, but Pilot being a guest at the wedding didn’t work for me.

I said a couple of episodes ago that I wondered whether Farscape’s writers were Blake’s 7 fans and now I’m even more convinced – the slow motion killing of all our heroes by the Peacekeepers was a carbon copy of the final episode of B7. Despite that, I cried my eyes out from that point of the episode until the end.

Aeryn’s now died in the final episode two seasons running!

I was waiting for us to find out that the old woman (her name is ‘Noranti’, according to British subtitles) was someone we’d met before.

They’re going to have to work really hard next season to find a reason to get everyone back together convincingly.

I really need to tape these and watch them again. I always miss too much on the first showing...anyhoos.

I was actually confused for a bit with the destruction of the other Leviathan, it at first looked as though they'd induced a Starburst to me. I'm a little dissapoined by quite HOW poerful that ship is though. OK, its nothing against a Command Carrier but still....

>convincingly.

*grins* See above. Suggestions welcome. ^_^

Betty Crocker is a company, started by a real lady named Betty Crocker, that sells bake-goods stuff and other items, particularly cake/muffin/bread mixes and frostings. She's (the company, I mean) very popular in America and has branched out into ready-to-eat meals and "just add water and presto, you've got a five-course dinner" type things.

Of course, now I cannot wait to learn how her name was used in this episode. (I'm a big spoiler reader, I admit it. Which makes me want to see this episode even more, dammit!)

By Callie on Friday, February 01, 2002 - 7:19 am:

Thank you for that, C. Betty only gets mentioned in passing, so it's no big exciting moment!

By Callie on Monday, February 11, 2002 - 9:42 am:

A few more thoughts, having seen it again:

I know it was all in John’s mind, but in the wedding shop Aeryn couldn’t even pronounce “Charge it” yet in a later conversation with Jack she’s speaking fluent English (and knows enough about Earth culture to know who Betty Crocker is – which even I didn’t and I’ve lived here forty years!). Was there a very long gap between shopping for the dress and the actual wedding, is Aeryn a very quick learner, or is John not being consistent in his dreams?

Once again Wayne had to spend hours in the make-up chair in order to deliver just a couple of lines. And unless they filmed his scene during the wedding and his conversation with John in Farscape One on the same day, he had to do it twice! That’s one very patient/dedicated/desperate for the money actor.

By the way, if you want to see pictures of Wayne without the makeup, click here. I love the South Park Scorpius T-shirt!

A possible theory re: the end of the episode. If it wasn’t all a dream, could it be Neeyala’s people from Self Inflicted Wounds who snatched Moya into the wormhole? Neeyala said that she’d attached a homing beacon to Moya so that her people could trace them.

By SpottedKitty on Wednesday, April 03, 2002 - 5:00 am:

Ohhss, good point there C. Never really though of that one...would certainly tie up a loose end.

By He, the Mortal, and the Misery on Saturday, April 27, 2002 - 7:21 pm:

Betty Crocker came up in her complaint to Jack's father. Basic jist: "Jon's trying to turn me into Betty Crocker" insuing he wants to turn a crack ace prowler pilot into the ideal 1950's housewife.

My nit: how did Pilot learn the other Pilot was dead and the method of death? From the sound of it the line of communication was not exactly clear. Even if able to communicate with the Rogue Leviathan it'd still be based on her willingness to give over said information. A different take on the Rogue knowing about Talyn nit.

It hit me like a rock just now...

WHERE THE FRELL DID AERYN GO???

I must have missed some dialogue. I know she left, but what is her destination? Just anywhere but Moya???

See ya later

Aaaagggghhhhh! My VCR didn't tape it! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

(Cathrine curls up into the fetal position and starts sucking her thumb.)

By SpottedKitty on Tuesday, April 30, 2002 - 3:46 pm:

*eeepps* Very bad luck C. :(

I've done stuff like that myself before and it always [insert nasty word] me off no end. I can't promise anything but I /may/ be able to get a hold of a copy for ye. :)

By cstadulis on Tuesday, April 30, 2002 - 4:36 pm:

Oh, SpottedKitty, you are a GOD if you can get a copy for me! (and I mean that very sincerely) I would be your slave forever.

By Harvey Kitzman on Wednesday, May 01, 2002 - 10:24 am:

TUE,

I believe that Aeryn mentioned something about going to a planet of former Peacekeepers. Where, I don't know.

Since Crichton's father would know that she's an alien, he could have the translator microbes injected in him (so she was probably speaking "Peacekeeperese" in that scene)

By Lee Jamilkowski (Ljamilkowski) on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 - 12:25 pm:

Aeryn said something about tracking down a PK regiment that had broken away from the PK's. But Aeryn wasn't the one sucked up by the wormhole from what I gather; it was Moya who got pulled into the wormhole, Aeryn had already taken off for parts unknown and Crichton was left alone as he was going to meet up with Moya and her crew in order to meet up with Aeryn.

By SpottedKitty on Friday, May 17, 2002 - 11:57 am:

C, gimmie a mail at my spottedkitty addy and I'll work out how I can get a copy of the ep to ya. =^_^=

By cstadulis on Monday, June 03, 2002 - 11:46 am:

Finally had the chance to sit down and watch this ep (thank you, spottedkitty!!!). Of course, the very next night, Sci-fi re-ran it! I swear that channel just likes messing with my head. Anyway....

Wow. Very good. I concur that it has to be those wormhole guys from "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda," who sucked up Moya at the end.

Can't wait for Friday to see the Season 4 premier!

By Josh M on Saturday, July 19, 2003 - 1:23 am:

This was a possible series finale. Then Season 4 (and 5, •••••• Sci-Fi) was approved. I'm glad this was not the series finale.

By Merat on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 10:54 am:

SpottedKitty,
Chiana does not have human legs. She is wearing pantyhose.

By Merat on Sunday, October 07, 2007 - 7:38 pm:

There is a great deleted scene from this episode of D'argo leading a conga line at the wedding. Also one of Rygel indulging in a bit of slavery(!) at John's bachelor party.
