We’re So Screwed, Part 1: Fetal Attraction

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Farscape: Season Four: We’re So Screwed, Part 1: Fetal Attraction
Noranti: “By my actions, I have taken innocent lives.”
Rygel: “Welcome to Moya.”

Moya arrives at a Scarran Border Station, at which is also docked the Scarran ship containing Aeryn. The crew begin their rescue attempt. And, in a final scene during which I guarantee that everyone’s jaw will most definitely drop, John makes a terrifying discovery.
Synopsis by Callie Sullivan.

I had to smile when the BBC diplomatically dropped the main title of this three-parter!

Are there lots of Scarran/Sebacean half-breeds? I know that the Scarrans had been trying to breed others but I’d thought that Scorpius was the only one that had survived. But even if there are others, I thought that Scorpius’ cooling suit was self-designed, so shouldn’t he be instantly recognisable?

How did the Charrids board Moya without her knowing? Pilot’s passing comment of not knowing that Chiana had been taken until too late seemed like lazy scripting to me.

Noranti’s grief at killing innocents and Rygel’s attempts to soothe her were really touching.

And then, just when I was really beginning to believe that Farscape couldn’t possibly drop any more major surprises on us, heeeeeeeeeee’s baaaaaaaaaaack! The arrival of Harvey 2.0 had me wailing, “Nooooooooo!” in total disbelief.

A bit more thought on this made me realise that Harvey must be lying in a desperate attempt to force John to try and rescue Scorpius. If Scorpius really had read John’s mind via Harvey and so already knows everything there is to know about wormhole technology, why’s he still hanging around John and protecting him? Surely he’d have killed him to prevent him ever telling anyone else, and then set up a new base to start his own development of wormhole weapons.

I have to agree with your comments about this ep Callie, I too wondered about Scorpius being recogniseable (so far all other Scarrans have known about Scorpy on sight) and how the Charrids made it onto Moya as well...very very lazy

I did cheer at Harvey being back though. Wayne does a top notch job of playing both characters completly differently and it's a credit to his name that he can do that. As for the "Scorpius knows all" I assumed it was at least /partly/ a ruse by Harvey (if that's who he turns out to be) because Scorpy will/should know a heckova lot after getting the neural chip.

By Callie on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 - 4:13 pm:

After Scorpius and the Scarran have fought, the Scarran turns his heat ray on Scorpy. Scorpy then does one of his classic vomiting routines. Unfortunately Wayne overdid it a bit and spat on the camera lens, and a large drop of his spit remains on the lens for the rest of the scene.

When Aeryn was being prepared for the foetal transfer, four huge prong things sank into her sides, going straight through her clothes. However, when John takes her back to Moya and lays her down on the bed, there is no sign of any holes in her clothing.

The Harvey resurrection scene is more hilarious every time I watch it, especially when, after he’s done his ominous Nosferatu routine and then John has slammed the coffin lid back down on him, Harvey suddenly speaks in a panic-stricken high pitched voice.

However, when John takes her back to Moya and lays her down on the bed, there is no sign of any holes in her clothing.I noticed that too! Plus, I was also wondering, how was she medically taken care of for that. Plus, wouldn't she be in dire need of medical attention, she had three prongs on each side, stuck in her, and after they were realised, on top of whatever damage to her internal organs because of that, I would think she would have bled to death. No, after being brought on Moya by Jon, he just put her to bed, and she was almost fine after that.

I have to say, I think Claudia did a great acting job on this. Well, all through the situation, but the screams when she was stuck with those prongs, and when they were released too. Her emotional reaching for the not there Jon, and then pushing him away, when she thought he really wasn't there. I thought she did a great job there, and boy did it make me feel it as well. Kudos to her for a superb acting performance.

I also thought that the scene between Noranti and Rygel was wonderful. It was very touching, and I can really see, how various individuals thrown together out of need, and usuall at each other's throats at times, really come to each other when in need of an emotional shoulder to cry on. Makes me really see the teamwork and the sense of family among the Moya crew.
We know that Sebecians can catch this disease, was it ever mentioned if humans can, or is it assumed that they can, cause if their similar appearance? I'm just wondering. Jon understandingly seemed concerned for Aeryn, but wasn't alarmed for his own well being. Also on that note, when indeed they were successful in transferring the fetus from Aeryn to Chianna, even though Chianna, as a Nebari who was immuned to the disease, who is it to say, that when she gestates the fetus, the half-breed Sebecian in her still doesn't get it and die.

A fine beginning to the last story of the show.

I was also surprised that Scorpius was not immediately recognized by the Scarran captain. The mechanism in the side of his head should be a giveaway. Although there was no particular reason that the Scarrans should have been looking for him, Scorpius should be on a "most wanted" list for working with the Peacekeepers. I'm curious to know how Scorpius obtained the code words that put the Scarran captain in line.

Why didn't Chianna comm Pilot or anyone while she was fighting off the boarding party? Or run into one of the cells on Moya and lock the door?

Maybe the table restraint rods didn't pierce Aeryn's clothes or skin. Perhaps they were designed to make contact, and to somehow stun her (rather painfully) in order to keep her immobilized while the doctor operated.

I agree that some sort of medical scan of Aeryn would have been appropriate. John seems to know that the baby is fine, was he just telling Aeryn what she wanted to hear?

I also agree that Harvey is lying to John. If Scorpius had obtained the wormhole info from John, Scorpius would have run off long ago. Harvey is some kind of "emergency beacon" that Scorpius activated to enlist John's help in the event that he was in a situation that he could not escape on his own.

Now, I just thought of another thing. I might not remember fully of the pact Scorpy and John made with each other, but didn't John just break it? Their blood pact was Scorpy to help retrieve Aeryn, for info of Worm Technology for Scorpy. Now, not only did John not give Scorpy the info, after Aeryn was retrieved, and Scorpy I think had a big hand in it, but John left Scorpy to die. I know it might be understandable for John and the rest of Moya's crew to be glad he was defeated, I just don't think John would be breaking a pact and leave Scorpy, no matter who he was. Is this just me?

By Obi-Juan on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 4:41 pm:

Technically, John didn't leave Scorpius behind. Scorpius was distracting the Scarran captain at his own choosing, and John was liberating Aeryn from the Scarran freighter. D'Argo and Chianna made the decision to leave Scorpius behind, while John was taking Aeryn to her quarters. John didn't know Scorpius was left behind until it was far too late to do anything about it.

John did promise to give Scorpius the wormhole technology, but he didn't say when!

Also, if Harvey IS right, and Scorpius already obtained the wormhole info through Harvey, John should consider his debt to Scorpius paid. Since John has repeatedly said that he doesn't care aboout Peacekeepers or Scarrans, he may decide not to pursue Scorpius.

Re: why Chi didn't comm, and Pilot didn't know about the boarding party...

For that matter, why did Chiana simply move to walk around them when she encountered them, as if it was okay for them to be there?

Very good points, Obi-Juan

Man, the Nosferatu ending was great!! Plot twists, inside jokes, and clever presentations like this are why I love this show.

Although, for obvious reasons, I'd prefer it if the implant had another name...

Harvey's "resurrection" is one of my favorite scenes from the show. I especially love it when Crichton slams the coffin shut and Harvey goes back to his normal voice.
