Pilot (Max hooks up with Logan and saves a kidnapped child)

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Dark Angel: Season 1: Pilot (Max hooks up with Logan and saves a kidnapped child)
In 2009, 12 genetically-engineered children escaped from Manticore, a genetic testing lab. A girl named Max was one of them. That same year, an electromagnetic pulse hit the U.S., forcing it into a third-world-country state. Today, Max lives in an apartment in Seattle and holds a steady job as a bike messenger. One of her fellow messengers, Theo, is sick and getting worse. At work, "Eyes Only," an underground news program, airs a story about a man named Edgar Sonrisa. Sonrisa, among other things, controls drug companies along the west coast. Later, during one of her runs, Max spies a gold statue across the way, in a rich apartment building. She also meets again with Voglesang, a seedy private detective who has helped her search for a woman Max met after her escape. He says he needs more money, so Max heads for the apartment building.
After breaking in, Max sees who "Eyes Only" is. In one of his transmissions, he says that he has a witness to the wongdoings of Sonrisa, who is peddling the drug Cortodiazepine, which he has replaced shipments of with sugar pills. Cortodiazepine is a cancer treatment, and is the only effective treatment for the Balcan War Syndrome, a fatal condition. Max is nearly caught by "Eyes Only," but she escapes.
Theo happens to be one of the vets suffering from Balcan War Syndrome, and he's getting worse.
"Eyes Only" uses his computers to scan Max's ID badge, and he bribes her boss to find out her address. That night, he catches up with her on the street and tells her why he does what he does, to help people. Later on, she arrives home and sees the gold statue on her dresser. She meets "Eyes Only" and learns that he knows things about her past. He tells her he can help her find the others like her, if she can help him protect the witness to Sonrisa's dealings, Lauren. She refuses, saying it isn't her problem.
Voglesang, meanwhile, has been attacked, and he now refuses to help Max anymore. Some men from Manticore have also had his office tapped.
Max meets with Theo's wife and learns that Theo is dead.
At work, the news shows that "Eyes Only" failed to fully protect Lauren. His bodyguards were killed, and he is now paralyzed from the waist down. Also, Lauren's daughter Sophie has been kidnapped as leverage to keep Lauren quiet. Max goes to the hospital and saves "Eyes Only" from being killed. She goes through some of his files and searches for information on Sonrisa. She decides to help Lauren get her daughter back.
Max sneaks into Sonrisa's mansion and impersonates a call-girl, knowing that Bruno Anselmo, one of Sonrisa's bodyguards, has a liking for beautiful women. She gets into Sonrisa's office and tells him he will pay her $50,000 in exchange for Lauren. She will call Lauren over from a certain location. Sonrisa lets Lauren talk to Sophie to prove Sophie's still alive. Bruno accompanies Max to a cheap hotel room. Max makes him believe Sonrisa is getting rid of him because he failed to kill Logan, twice. She beats him up and leaves, but he "kills" her and heads for Sonrisa. Max has Voglesang search the number of Lauren's daughter, and she heads that way. The Manticore soldiers get there first, so she impersonates one of them and saves Sophie, right under their nose.
Bruno, meanwhile, has killed Sonrisa.
Max and the other workers pay for Theo's ashes, and she delivers them to his wife and child.
Three months later, Max meets with "Eyes Only" again. He gives her the statue, which "somehow" ended up on the black market. He goes over another job for her, stopping a smuggler. She doesn't want to go, but he shows her a picture of a boy who escaped from a jail months earlier. It's Zack, another Manticore escapee.

-The first episode, originally aired as a two-hour movie.

THOUGHTS
-Great episode. An awesome way to start the series. Everything is fleshed out nicely.

-In the preview for this episode, Max's quote, "You're not even trying!" is different from the one in the episode.

-Indiana Jones moment: Max saying "This isn't my usual line of work...I'm making it up as I go along." Indy says something like this in "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

FAVORITE QUOTE
"Hope is for losers. It's a con-job people trip behind till they finally get a grip on the cold, hard truth."
-Max, reflecting on top of the Space Needle.

NITS
-Not to be unkind, but one of the kids who tries to run away in the beginning of the episode has buck-teeth. I thought these kids were supposed to be near-perfect genetic specimens.

-All the kids in the lab have shaved heads. Why not engineer them to be hairless from the beginning? (I know, Jessica Alba has to be beautiful. And she definitely is...)

-I'm sorry if this sounds sexist, but why would the engineers make female Chimeras if they are going to have PMS (and all the effects of it) later on in life? Or do they?

-How did Max elude Logan on the street? It looked pretty big to me. I know she can run fast, but still, wouldn't he have heard her footsteps?

-Lydecker doesn't seem to have changed much since 2009.

-The kidnappers watch a boxing match before Max (and the military) comes in. Problem is, they're watching it on a TV that looks like it's from the 1970's. I know there was an EM pulse which led to the depression, but it happened in 2009. Consiering that, wouldn't an old TV in 2019 be something like a flat-screen or high-definition TV?

QUESTIONS
-If Zack is really alive, how did he survive? Max survived partially by accident. It's pretty unbelievable that he escaped, given that:
1. The military guys took him down with about a dozen tazer shots.
2. Max was saved by Hannah. Who picked up Zack?
By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 2:03 am:

Missed most of the first hour, however...

The Space Needle is 500 feet high. Hell of a climb just for some privacy.
Lydecker: We know one of those kids is in the Seattle area.
Aide: Sir, a hovercam and a satellite have both recorded a young girl climbing the Space Needle.
Lydecker: Probably just a thrill-seeker. Let's tap some phones & bug some computers!

Also why hasn't some business repaired the damage and turned it back into a tourist attraction?

I'm not a big fan of plotlines that involve government conspiracies. Not because I believe that the government is full of saints, it's usually that saying "It's a government conspiracy." is a hack writers way of not coming up with a good reason.

I did not care for the shots of Max popping pills. Sure they said it was an herbal drug and used to control her seizures, but a shot of a heroine chugging a bottle of pills like a junkie is a bad visual image.

Bar codes!?! In this day & age we have computer chips that can be implanted. Pure BILC!

Also tattoos can be removed, so why not bar codes?

Okay, the rich guy figures out who Max is with bits & pieces of info, but the military is always one step behind?

"I'm making this up as I go along." Nice way to inspire confidence in this frantic mother, Max.

The girl in the red dress was larger than Max, but when Max is later seen in, presumably, the same dress, is suddenly fits very well. I guess Max is also an expert tailor.

Bruno was a very bad hitman. There was no blood in the water, and no entrance wound on her body, but he believed he had killed her. Yeah, right.

Loved the bad guy giving up after 47 laser sights are targeted on him.

By Spornan on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 6:03 am:

Speaking of 47's, there is a real 47 alert in this episode. Towards the end, the reported guy (forgot his name) says that 47 people who smuggled money were killed.

Wonder if that'll become a trend.

Er...

Reporter. Not reported. The Eyes Only guy.

A terrorist group detonated a nuke above Seattle, Washington and the EMP pulse wiped pretty much everything 'lectrical for 80 miles... Not dissin Washington but... WHY WASHINGTON? DC I can see, but this is Washington STATE... Right on the edge of the west coast too. They act like they nuked the whole USA... They act like it was such a tragedy that most of their information was stored digitally... haven't they heard of backups? Surely by 2025 everyone will have super high broadband internet connections so why not just store backups in say, VERMONT?

Of course the place looks like it was just nuked YESTERDAY even though it's been at least 18 years since "the pulse" so why not rebuild? Cars and motorcycles can still run so why not bulldozers and cranes?

"We're going to breed super strong, super fast, super smart kids so we'll need some good security"

"I know... how about these big glass windows and that 6 foot high chain link fence..."

"Yeah that'll hold em"

By Newt on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 12:14 pm:

The whole EMP causing a depression thing seemed a little well dis-believable. I mean especially if it struck out West. If it have hit the whole country or the East and knocked out NY or something I would believe it would do something. Also the retro/garabage style doesn't seem to care over well to me. It is so overused. Now the old cars I can understand, mechnically driven so they would still work, but really. And this whole escape to Canada idea. I seriously doubt if Washington state was in that condition that Canada would be untouched. Let alone be a place you would want to escape to, thier economy is built into ours so much it would bring us both down. Also as long as we had nuclear weapons I don't think US could ever be an 'ex-superpower'.

Fun story I guess. But the believeablity is a little much.

The Space Needle at the beginning is a beautiful effect though, I have to wonder what kind of grafetti artist would have, well the balls, to spray paint his sign on the edge of the Space Needle?

By ScottN on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 12:23 pm:

Typical east-coaster. Unless it does something to NY, it can't affect anything. Yeah.

Let's see... What's up in Seattle? Hmm... Oh, yeah... a little teeny weenie company called Microsoft. And another one called Boeing. And others. Seattle is a major high-tech hub.

If they knocked out San Francisco, most of the banking for the Rim would be gone. As well as a large portion of Aerospace (can you say Lockheed?). If they knocked out LA, they take out a large portion of the entertainment industry (no loss there), aerospace, tech, etc...

By S.Na on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 2:36 pm:

At one point someone mentioned that the EM pulse wiped out everything east of the Rockies. So why is Seattle affected?

If Max is so paranoid of being caught why does she dangle a woman single-handedly off a balcony in view of the public? She could have achieved the same effect without the showiness. After all, those cameras are everywhere.

By Newt on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 3:24 pm:

Yes I'm an east-coaster, but luckily a southerner too.

I still don't buy it. I don't think that taking out either the West or the East coast would cause what we see here. Maybe both, and maybe if more of the infrastructure had been destoryed but really I find the depression hard to believe.

By Newt on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 3:33 pm:

also Microsoft exists in more that just Seattle (even if most of the programming is done there) they are a global company. And also if the company had an kind of disaster planning they would be able to keep on going. Example Gateway, has the plan setup to convert their Kansas City Complex into a factory if the plant in South Dakota or where ever is destroyed. As for Boeing. Not a big deal, the lack of new planes wouldn't end the world. San Francisco, well I'm not a expert on west coast banking, but don't think killing all the electronics in SF would cause a depression. As for the entertainment industry, well I think you could go back to filming on pure film like they did in the pre digital age. Or just steal all the equipment from the East Studios. As for the loss of dot com companies, not big loss, they just have to stop producing nothing.

Anyway, I think a recession would be more likely than a depression for this kind of event. But I'm willing to suspend disbelief to enjoy this show.

By Spornan on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 3:34 pm:

Scott, the offices of Microsoft and other companies create the stuff, but they don't really run it. I could much more see the pulse causing problems if it detonated over NYC, or DC. Frankly, Seattle is just not the hubbub of American operations that they make it out to be in this show.

By ScottN on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 3:43 pm:

My point is that an EMP over any major Western US commerce center could trigger financial disaster as much as one over NYC could.

Mariners 2 Games to White Sox 0
(Game 1 Ms 7 Pale Hose 4
Game 2 Ms 5 Pale Hose 2)
Not that it has anything to do with anything!:)

Any way:

So why isn't Max shivering when "Anne" finds her,
she was out in the cold for an aweful long time
and was under ice cold water for part of that time.
I realize that the kids were genetically altered
but unless they were given the DNA of a sperm whale it's unlikely that even they would be able
to survive out in the cold as long as they were
without being affected by the cold weather.

Lydecker alias Captain Ransom!:)

Just to point out that John Savage also played
Captain Ransom on the VOYAGER two parter EQUINOX,
lest we forget.

Cool scene:Max carrying the kidnapped girl out
in front of Lydecker!:)

Another cool scene was the one where she does her
flying harness bit to steal the statuette of the
Egyptian Cat Goddess from Logan(I think it was a
statuette of the Egyptian Cat Goddess,in any case
it was Egyptian).

Also the bit on the Space Needle.

BTW:It be cool to see Max wear something like
a Huskies t'shirt or a Mariners cap or a jacket
with the Sonics emblem on it or a Seahawks sweat
shirt...just a thought.:)

By trekkerxphile on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 9:08 pm:

Wonderful show . . . so far anyway. I really like Max. Here's hoping she keeps her power and attitude and doesn't get perfect and morally serving cuz of Logan. I liked him, but there are big things about him that bug me. anyway:

Questions & Ponderments:
How did Sketchy know Max's abilities? Carrying it further, most of her friends seem to know she's not quite normal. Wouldn't this be something she wants to keep quiet? I realize she trusts her friends, but she is supposed to be someone who "keeps everyone at arm's length" because she's worried about people tracking her. Seems like it would be really easy, especially since her friends aren't the number one trustworthy group (Sketchy cheats on Natalie, for example) for something to "slip" to someone less trustworthy. And how fast does that "I saw this one girl pick out the phone numbers just by listening" rumor spread? At least today, it would travel pretty quickly.

For that matter, how has Max avoided those surveilance cameras everywhere for 10 years? Especially since she climbs space needles and breaks into glass skyscrapers.

The series is set in 2019, not 2025 (at least, 2019 is what it says on my screen).

Did the pulse take out the whole country, or just the West? I'm still not clear on that, because having half the country poor and the other half fine-to-rich for a good 10 years just doesn't make sense. And wouldn't there have been regrowth (more of it) in 10 years? Max says they're still in Depression and it doesn't look like much economic or political growth has come in that time.

Could the kids communicate telepathically or did they just know each other really well? "Zach" doesn't give verbal instructions, but everyone seems to understand him. But their being telepathic opens up a whole new can of worms.

Has Max ever considered looking for the kids who DIDN'T escape? Twelve got out, 10 of those are dead/hurt/accounted for, all except Max & Zach. What about the others? It looked like there were a good 30, 40 kids in Max's flashbacks. Or has she given up on them?

Eyes Only has some sophisticated equipment. It can't be easy to hijack the whole network.

Great new show!!

By KAM on Thursday, October 05, 2000 - 2:00 am:

A nuke was detonated over Seattle??? Did the show ever say what happened to all the radioactive fallout? (Can you say death, destruction and pollution? I think you can.) Also if a nuke had gone off over Seattle, I believe the majority of Seattle, including the Space Needle would be replaced with a crater.

And what does the Experience Music Project (EMP) have to do with causing a depression? ;-)

I wonder if Frasier & Niles survived? ;-)

By Spornan on Thursday, October 05, 2000 - 2:56 am:

trekkerxphile, I think that the kids were able to communicate because they had been trained their whole lives to help each other out in the field. It seems they were being bred to become super-soldiers.

I still find the "nuclearn bomb detonates over Seattle, no one is hurt, but the EM pulse destroyes all the computers, thus spinning the country into financial ruin" plot a bit of a suspension of disbelief.

Am I the only one who found most of the first hour to be incredibly boring? I really had higher hopes for this show, but the pilot wasn't all that great.

By Spornan, creator of typos! on Thursday, October 05, 2000 - 2:57 am:

eh...nuclear. Oops.

By MarkN on Thursday, October 05, 2000 - 4:06 am:

Cool scene:Max carrying the kidnapped girl out in front of Lydecker!
Yeah, but I wondered if Lydecker was so smart, why didn't he know that he had no females agents with him and that the only one he saw was who he was after till right when he hears her drive off?

I was also a bit put off that they used such "old" computers from around 1-2 decades before the show takes place. They would've updated the design numerous times by then, even after the Pulse, unless it slowed down new designs for awhile, but still...

I noticed that the "older" cars looked a lot newer than some of the "new" ones made just for the show.

The younger Max looked a bit older than 9, plus she didn't have the little mole on the left side of her chin like the 19yo Max did. Maybe it took awhile to grow.

Overall, I liked the show.

High altitude air burst designed to create EMP, not slag the city. Off-topic comment: This is how the Russkies beat the US in "Amerika".

Thanks ScottN, but I still wonder about fallout.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Friday, October 06, 2000 - 10:31 am:

For all the Frasier fans out there (both of you) The Craine borthers would be aproxamatly 60 or so in 2019. (Assuming they were in there 40's in 2000 or so.) Still, it would be funny if someone from Frasier appered on Dark Angel. I personally would like to see John Mahoney play a retired radio psychologist. Or at least a mention of the Elliot Bay Towers.

By Brian on Tuesday, October 10, 2000 - 8:42 pm:

I do not recall hearing the the EMP happened over Seattle. I thought they said that it took place 80 miles above the surface in general. I seem to recall seeing something about cold war nuclear strategy (sp). I think that it said that a nuke detonated high enough above the surface could shut down the country. compaired to the space shuttle hights 80 miles does not sound like much but 50 miles up is considered the threshold of space. The pilots who flew in the X-15 which went 50 miles up were given astronauts wings.

As for young max not looking 9. If they are geneticly engineared they could have been made to mature faster.

Their could have been some major cancer cases, espicaly at the 80 miles below ground zero (air zero?) but it was just never addressed in the show. Perhaps they should have said that the drug that was being replaced with suger pills treated cancer instead of Balken war syndrome.

By Emily on Tuesday, October 10, 2000 - 9:08 pm:

Saw the pilot and again the nuke nuke fried everything "east of the Rockies". If I recall my geography Seattle is west of the Rockies.

By trekkerxphile on Tuesday, October 10, 2000 - 11:22 pm:

Brian - maybe in some upcoming ep they'll have Eyes Only touch on the cancer thing. Though it would probably be common knowledge and blamed on terrorists.

And let's hope they genetically engineered them to mature faster, because either young Max has been eating her veggies or the actress is about 14.

Yep, Emily. West of the Rockies and west of the Cascades.
Are you the same Emily who posts on the Doctor Who board?

no, sorry KAM I'm not. If there is another Emily maybe I should start posting with my last inital too.

Nits:
>I'm sorry if this sounds sexist, but why would the engineers make female Chimeras if they are going to have PMS (and all the effects of it) later on in life? Or do they?

People start out as females by default. It takes the Y chromosome and the right hormones to make you male. Also, because girls have two X chromosomes, they are much more "stable", i.e. they can balance out weaknesses on one of them. That is why mostly males are colorblind (Y chromosome) and have other inherited diseases on the X chromosome which don't affect females. The PMS doesn't affect all females, a lot of sportswomen have no trouble or use a period of heighented awareness to their advantage. You can also use pills against. After all, they train these kids to be soldiers, who cares if they have pain?

moreover, if you are experimenting with humans, females can "breed" the next generation on their own... Much cheaper, easier and safer than using foster mothers.

Nits

Has Max been engineered to have a hardhat in her skull, or is there a coolness factor that makes you ride a bike without a helmet? (Even when the characters are supposed to be intelligent, nobody on TV wears a helmet on a motorbike, not even macgyver. Very sad. Physics wouldn't stop for heroes.) Even if she has super-reflexes, that does not prevent accidents on a motorbike.

Questions:

Why does she wait so long to take the pills? If you know you get the shakes after 12 hrs or what you take them regularly before the shaking starts (BILC).

Would the Barcode on the neck not change a lot with growing up? I don't know many kids with tatooes, but I thought that the skin stretched while growing, making it impossible to read.

When lyndecker bugs the private detectives office, he says he handles only normal stuff, its not worth it. Suddenly, when max makes the 2nd phone call, they know it's her and rush immediately to the place. Before, Max spoke in the office and L. didn't recognise the voice.

>And let's hope they genetically engineered them to mature faster, because either young Max has been eating her veggies or the actress is about 14.

I thought she was 19? 10 years after her escape?

Aside from that, it looks pretty good so far.

By Art Vandelay on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 6:47 am:

Has Max been engineered to have a hardhat in her skull,

Max's bones would have to be a lot tougher than normal bones due to her increased strenght. Otherwise they'd snap when she lifts something heavy, or jumps from a height.

As for the tattoos, they are genetically coded and so grew on the skin rather than being actually tattooed on.
