Logan Cale

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Dark Angel: The Characters: Logan Cale
By Mike Ram (Mram) on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 1:10 am:

Underground cyber-journalist, rich, and charming. He runs a 60-second underground news program ("Eyes Only") from his apartment, using digital cameras and some computers. He blocks out everything but his eye-line in order to keep his identity secret during these reports.

-He was shot by Bruno Aneselmo in the first episode (Bruno was working for Edgar Sonrisa), and was confined to a wheelchair due to injuries to his spinal cord. However, thanks to transfusions of Manticore-enriched blood by Max, he was able to walk, if only for a short while. He repaired Phil's exoskeleton ("I And I Am A Camera") in hopes that it might help him walk again. It works, but is easily damaged and not totally reliable.

-Logan was married to a woman named Valerie, but she was alcoholic, and only in it for the money. She returned once, but really only wanted to get some money from Logan for her new husband.

-He is assisted by his good friend and physical therapist, Bling. His original bodyguard was Peter Ashley.

-His extravagant lifestyle comes from a result of inheriting his parents' fortune after their death. Although the rest of his family is wealthy as well, Logan's non-business oriented outlook on life has basically alienated him from them. Logan recently exposed a conspiracy in his uncle's company (which made the killer hoverdrones in "I And I Am A Camera"), which has cost him a great deal of his fortune.

-He had chicken pox once as a child, but mysteriously contracted it again from his niece, Brittany. He made a full recovery ("Gill Girl").

Contacts/Allies:
-Detective Matt Sung, a cop who is one of the few law enforcers that's not corrupt. Sung has ties to the Chinese part of the city ("Radar Love")(First seen in "C.R.E.A.M.").

-Sebastian, a brilliant disabled man who speaks with the aid of a voice analyzer ("Red").

-Dr. Sam Carr, Logan's doctor and surgeon (Seen in various episodes, especially "Some Assembly Required").

-Dr. Beverly Shankar, a physician who is always ready to help "Eyes Only" (First seen in "Pollo Loco").

-Asha Copeland, a freedom fighter working for the S1W, who has assisted "Eyes Only" for years. Has a tendency to "put her foot in her mouth." She becomes attracted to Logan around the time of "Radar Love."

So why did the writers feel it necessary to paralyze Logan? It seems like such an obvious (and shallow) plot device to keep he and Max out of a "romantic" relationship. Didn't it seem like they were toying with some "chemistry" between these two characters... which ended when he was confined to his wheelchair?

This bothers me on several levels, one being the suggestion that such an injury puts an end to his love life, that it cooled any interest Max may have had. Then there's the contradictions - in one scene we see he and Max with sads look of lost potential on their faces, and then later he's rolling his chair into a dangerous situation to try to help her.

I get the impression that the writer's original plan was to keep Logan parked in front of his computer screen - a "behind the scenes" benefactor. The "Charlie" to the Angel "Max". Now it appears they're realizing that was a mistake.

I think that their are several reasons that Logan ended up in a wheel chair. One is because it shows that he is committed to his cause. Before the injury he's just a rich boy with too much time on his hands. After such an injury most people would throw in the towel before they end up dead.

Also because now he has more of a reason to use Max. Even factoring in her genetically engineered ability, many viewers would interpret his constant sending her into danger as some spoiled rich boy making A GIRL do his dirty work. Before anyone flames me, I'm not saying I believe in such sexist antiquated notions. But many TV viewers do, and anyone who thinks otherwise is far too idealistic.

On a lighter note, here is another possible, more superficial, reason to have Logan in a wheel chair. When him and Max are together she is usually standing. In order to get him in the shots you have to frame the shots lower than you otherwise would. "What does shot framing have to do with anything?" you ask. Simple, lower angles mean more shots of Jessica's very shapely rear end. (BTW anyone who wants to flame me for being sexist because of that last reason; go ahead, I disserve it)
