Red (Bruno Anselmo returns, and now he's got the Red Series with him)

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Dark Angel: Season 1: Red (Bruno Anselmo returns, and now he's got the Red Series with him)
"She was designed to be the perfect soldier. She was trained as a weapon. But then she escaped. They came after her, and she knew they would never stop looking. She was lucky...a few months later, terrorists set off an electro-magnetic pulse that fried all the computers. The U.S. went from superpower to third-world country overnight. It was easy to disappear. Now she has an unlikely ally. Logan Cale, underground cyber-journalist and crusader. He wants to save the world, or what's left of it. She just wants to find the others like her. Together...who knows?"

Max saves the principal witness to the wrongdoings of Mayor Steckler (who sold drugs meant for war veterans on the black market). He turns out to be none other than Bruno Anselmo, the man who crippled Logan and "killed" Max on her first mission. Bruno continuously pushes Max's buttons while in protection, even escaping while in their hotel room, but Max tries to stay calm. While Bruno makes a phone call to his daughter, three men with Manticore-like strength break into the hotel, but Max and Bruno escape. Logan later finds out that the three men (the "Red Series") have had their brains scrambled, eliminating their fear and pain. The only downside to their advancements is a short lifespan, which is why they are in Seattle. They need Max's Manticore genes to perfect their bodies. The next day, Bruno introduces Max to his daughter, before nearly getting killed by a gunman. When the time for the trial is at hand, Bruno testifies against the crooked mayor, but a bomb threat is called after his testimony. Bruno leads Max out of the courtroom and into an underground area, where the Red Series men appear. Bruno figured that Max was one of the Manticore kids when he fought her, so he called up Johansen, the leader of the three men, for a quick payoff. Max fights the Red Series men until Logan shows up and takes her to safety. In the meantime, Bruno is killed by Johansen. At the very least, his daughter will remember him for his one good deed.

THOUGHTS
-Great episode. Nice interplay between Max and Bruno throughout. You can just tell that Max just wants to pop him in the mouth.

-Max in a bath? Wow(okay).

-Some weird music plays as Max travels to get Bruno at the beginning of the episode. I don't know, I just found it a little distracting.

FAVORITE QUOTE
"Bite me."
-Max to a Red Series.

NITS
-Max complains about having one bed in the hotel room she got for Bruno. I thought she didn't have to sleep?

-Didn't Max even THINK that Bruno would escape out of the window in the hotel room bathroom?

-How did the hotel desk clerk know where Bruno's cab was headed?

-Impossible moves by Max in the bar.

-I know the Red Series men can't feel pain, but how can they punch through elevator doors without getting heavily broken bones?

-How come we've never seen this "Sebastian" guy before? He seems pretty helpful to Logan.

-Where did Max hide her motorcycle after escaping from the hotel?

-Impossible moves by Max AND the Red Series men when they fight the end of the episode.

Yes, about the elevator door and no one breaks anything. How about getting hit with some 9mm bullets and loooong shock treatment. These guys may not feel pain, but getting hit by a bullet would cause shock and/or damage enough to kill the victim. If one gets enough electricity run through, nitrogen bubbles build up on the blood stream followed by severe damage or death.
Then removing a bullet from the lower part of a body. First the bullet would have gone through, tearing up organs and blood vessels, then a larger exit wound would have been inflicted. No bullet to pull out. Then these guys just get up and live through this??? Unless their blond controller gets some help from a good doctor, these guys who were shot will drop from a loss of blood. Shock treatment guy may be a loss cause due to tissue damage.
But then these "guys" may not be South Africans, but new items out, manufactured by the Cyberdine Corporation - Cyberdine Series Model (CSM) 101, T-800 i.e. Terminator. Would explain a lot. James Cameron is the executive producer of the series. Hmmmm????

This episode was in serious need of a subplot. Anything to break away from Bruno for a few minutes, he was really annoying.

So who is this mysterious Mr. Multiples we keep hearing about? My money's on Sven, the dude from the bar last week. First, Kendra told Max that she knows the guy. Second, Kendra keeps referring to him as "being in town," and just last week she said Sven was only going to be in town for a few days. Any other nominees?

Didn't Kendra have another guy with her when she went into the bar last week, besides Sven? It looked like she brought Sven for Max and the other guy was her own date. Besides which, Kendra was trying to set Max up with Sven, and she says in this episode she "won't let Max near him". My bet is on the other guy in the bar.

Max put up with a heck of a lot of •••• from Bruno. Alba handled it well, but the writing seemed out of character -- haven't we seen that when she loses her patience, she beats you up? Why didn't she just keep knocking Bruno out cold? She could have timed it so he'd wake up in time for the trial. A headache probably wouldn't have prevented him from testifying (but then, it would have been a short show, and we wouldn't get the great interplay and the Manticore wannabes).

Hey, the main Manticore-wannabe, the middle guy when they walked around, the one who got shock treatment (I think) at the end, wasn't he on X-Files two weeks ago? He looked like the guy with X-ray vision from "Surekill." Anybody confirm?

Lol trekker, I was thinking the same thing when I saw him! I tried to look it up on IMDB but they didn't have the guest apperences that quick after the show.
I can't confirm, but I think so...

We have a match! An actor named "Patrick Kilpatrick" (no offense, but what kind of a name is *that*?!?) played Randall Cooper in the X-Files episode "Surekill" and "Red Five" in the Dark Angel episode "Red." Info came from the official X-Files site (www.thexfiles.com) and darkangeltv.com. Not important, really, but kind of fun as trivia.

Was the guy that killed Bruno connected to the Red series at all or was he acting independently to kill Bruno? He said on the phone that he knew how to track Bruno as he had weaknesses (i.e. his kid) so it sounded like he wasn't part of the setup to get Max.

Patrick Kilpatrick also played one of the soliders in DS9's seventh season "The Siege of AR-558."
