NIT: On one page they label both the Defiant and Voyager as "The Defiant", not only is Voyager not the Defiant but would it be "USS Defiant", like the rest of the ships in the book are labeled.
COMMENT: I like the picture of the Bontany Bay launching with the booster rockets.
ANP
In the index, there is an entry for the kitchen sink.. it goes like this:
"Kitchen sink; of Starship Enterprise, inexplicably excluded from book, but indexed anyway, 1701."
clever example of the sense of humor of these people..
Also, if you look at both editions of the cronology, they thank some interesting people. For instance, in this one, they thank Tom Servo (space hero).
They also thank John Sheridan (Babylon 5).
Alright, here is the list of people they thanks for inspiration: Saul Bass, Louis Grant, Susan Ivanova, Claude Lacombe, J.J. Adams, John Drake, Alexander Waverly, Dorthy Gale, Jim McCarthy, Duncan Idaho, Dr. Henry Jones, Jr., Dr. Jeremy Stone, Dr. Sidney Zwibel, and Dr. Ted Geisel.
like i said, the Okudas have a strange sense of humor..
What does Mr. Grant have to do with anything? did Mary Tyler Moore get a listing in this one?
Nothing, the Okudas' just wanted to have fun with the 2+ pages of agnoledgements. You should see the credits for the CD-ROM Starship Creator!
Who do they thank in those credits?
They than a "perpetual intern" and list themselves a "Denise Okuda, tired" and "Mike Okuda, really tired". That's all I can remember from Starship Creator. On that note, I'm going to bed.
What is this supposed to be chronology of?
I thought it was the Star Trek universe, but it lists all the episodes in airdate order, not stardate order. This seems meaningless and leads to discrepancies too many to list. For instance, they chicken out regarding the order in which to list TNG and DS9 episodes when the appropriate point comes, when they could easily have used stardate order.
In short, this book creates more problems than it solves (though it has many good points too...)...
This is somewhere else on the site, but I thought I would post it here. There is an entry in the index under Pulaski that says "falls down elevator shaft, 444" There aren't even 300 pages in the thing! It's an in joke to one of her characters on another series.
Also another thing. There is an entry for Australlia joining the United Earth government, citing a passage from "Attached" (TNG). The episode actually has Picard giving a hypothetical situation- what if Australlia didn't join... so the data point is "false"
It's in the index of my first edition of the 'Chronology', so i'm guessing it's here too:
'Alderaan; Never visited by Starship Enterprise, 401'. Actually had me going for a few brief seconds there....
And another thing! Here on the bottom of page 168 of the Chronology I find something interesting after the entry for "Disaster". Down towards the bottom of the page:
"Starship Enterprise-D pm scientific mission to conduct studies at the previously uncharted Phoenix cluster. Several science teams are transported from the Starship Zhukov to assist in the project. Although the expedition had been scheduled to last five weeks, a diplomatic mission to Oceanus IV has cut the available time to only two weeks.
(Just prior to "The Game" (TNG))
Editor's Note: Sensor scans of luminesecent asteroids within the Phoenix cluster were apparently unsuccesful in locating the whereabouts of Lieutenant Talby."
Well, that's all well and good, but... what are they talking about? The Phoenix cluster only appears this once, according to the index (but we all know how goofy that can be, see above) and there is no mention of a Lt. Talby. Does anyone know what this means?
I have no idea who Lt. Talby is. I didn't get it either but I assume it's one of the Okuda's in-jokes, probably something to do with Buckaroo Banzai, which they're constantly referencing.
Lt. Talby is one of the characters in the film 'Dark Star' who is carried off at the end by the Phoenix asteroids.
I just got this, the 2nd Edition of this, from eBay.
I had it orginally in 1997 when it came out. but I decided I wanted to read it again!
This was good, but it came out in 1996, FOURTEEN YEARS AGO! It's way out of date. Since this edition was published, we've had.
The last three seasons of Deep Space Nine.
The remaining five seasons of Voyager.
The four seasons of Enterprise.
The movies Insurrection and Nemesis.
Finally, the JJ Abrams movie (which will have to be mentioned as occurring in an alternate time line running alongside the Trek Reality Prime).
If you ask me, it's high time for an updated editon, including the information I listed above.
What do you all think?
I agree.
But as you may have read elsewhere, the reason why there has not been an update to the Trekclopedia since 1999 is because it's too costly to produce and they don't make enough back on it's sales.
I would think the same applies for the Chronology.
Sad but true!
That sucks! They're missing more than half the saga
