Time for a rant here..

WHY THE HECK WAS THIS SHOW CANCELED?!Why are all the good shows canceled? Seaquest, Jonny Quest (whoa, connection, maybe they have it out for "quest" shows....)

(Heh heh, sorry...:))

By Murray Leeder on Monday, February 22, 1999 - 9:20 pm:

Why was it renewed after its abysmal second season?

By Matthew Patterson on Monday, February 22, 1999 - 9:23 pm:

As far as I know, it was canceled after everyone stopped watching because they killed or otherwise got rid of all but three of the original cast (if you count Darwin).

By ScottN on Tuesday, February 23, 1999 - 10:50 am:

Because it was dumb (I'd say stoo-pid, but it'd be censored) after the first season.

The first season promised (and essentially delivered) hard-core realistic sci-fi set in the near future, the others got a bit wild, with ETs, time travel, and other stuff...

By ScottN on Tuesday, February 23, 1999 - 10:50 am:

BTW, Isn't Johnny Quest back on the CartoonNetwork?

By Aaron Dotter on Tuesday, February 23, 1999 - 4:37 pm:

ScottN got it right on- I started to lose interest after all the Star Trek-type stuff was added to it, especially after they went to 2032. I had expected a show about undersea life and exploration and it ended up being sort of a Star Trek knockoff.

By Mike Ram on Tuesday, February 23, 1999 - 9:10 pm:

Season 1: Boring yet realistic
Season 2: 3 words: Man Eating Plants.
Season 3: What in the world is going on!!!

I liked the show but if they kept the same format for the first season and applied it to the others, it might still be on.

Man Eating Plants:"Plaahhhbbbbpppp!"

By A. Sinclaire on Wednesday, February 24, 1999 - 12:14 pm:

ScottN--Yeah, JQ is back in Cartoon Network. And the WB. And various other things...... In syndication, though.

Everyone -- You guys are right! First season was cool, but the rest were kinda..silly. Okay, but silly. Cept for the one about that guy's mom who took pills to make herself younger.....

By Richie Vest on Wednesday, March 03, 1999 - 5:54 pm:

The Show was a poor Star Trek wanna be the first season. The Second season was a wanna be Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Season Three was trying to go back to the first season.

When they turned the characters to young people, it detracted from it. :-(

Don't forget how many times they destroyed the Seaquest the rebuilt it (twice I think). I also think that making Roy Scheider an enviromentalist was a pretty bad move.

I thought the first season was great, the second season OK, but I couldn't stand the third season for some reason. I liked Dr. Westphalen, thought that Dr. Smith was a poor Troi wannabe, and I have no idea why they even had the other Dr, since she only filled up space. I liked Ortiz and was sorry to see him go. And I couldn't stand the new captain. I liked Bridger.

The problem was fights over creative control and overcompensation when there were flaws. By that, I mean that there were too many powerful people trying to run the show, so each season you had someone new in charge, and each season was almost like a brand new series.
The first season set out certain goals and parameters, mostly having to do with realism and serious sci-fi. Those who liked the show were totally happy with the way it was going, but the producers panicked when the ratings weren't as high as they wanted.
So instead of working harder to pump up the energy or create stronger stories for the show based on what they already had, they scrapped it and turned the show into fantasy-driven sci-fi. This not only irritated most of the original fans, but it didn't draw in too many new ones, since it was so silly.
Third season (which I liked best) became a military show. It was an attempt to return to the seriousness of the first season while moving into military/politics-driven sci fi. By this time no one was taking the show seriously; fans of season one and/or two were mad that the show had changed; and they were out of steam. It's too bad, really, because if they had stuck with any one of the three approaches and done it better, they might have really gotten somewhere.

The show was only at its best the first season. After that there were too many changes.

I've found that anytime a sf tv show has producers, writers,or actors proclaiming that they aren't "really a science fiction show,"that the show is in trouble & we fans are about to suffer an enormous disappointment.

I really enjoyed the first season. I will be buying the DVD set of that soon.

The second season is on DVD as well, but I see no reason for the "2032" third season to *ever* be released!
