I liked Darwin. They didn't use enough of him talking during the second and third seasons.
He was voiced by the "Voice God" Frank Welker.
I wonder if Darwin is still alive. I don't know how long dolphins live.
There actually was not real dolphin used; it was all movie magic. He was mostly a remote control model with the occasional CGI of him swimming around the ship.
That last part should have read "CGI of him swimming outside of the ship," like in the Pilot where he attaches a homing beacon to the enemy sub.
I see. There never was a real dolphin in this show, then?
What about the interior sets where Darwin would interact with the cast, I thought at least they used a real dolphin for that.
No that was an animatronic & a very good one for that time period. Keeping a habitat suitable for a real dolphin on set would have been more expensive than using anamatronics. Special effects man Walt Conti, who was responsible for the Darwin animatronic, was also the man behind much of the underwater effects for the humpback whales in Star Trek IV.
Brian - Are you sure it wasn't a real dolphin?
What about the shot of him leaping out of the water near the end of 'Splashdown'?
