Good book. Not as good as the prior chapter, but a great way to introduce us to Eddie and Susannah Dean.

The ending was spoiled for me by the imagery surrounding the merging of Odetta and Detta. The only way Roland can get them to acknowledge each other is for them to see each other, and they can only do this by looking through the door at Roland at the same time as he looks back through the door into his own world. When they do ‘see’ each other, I had no problem with Detta and Odetta believing they were physically trying to strangle each other because I just saw that as the mental torment they were going through; but when Roland then returns to his own body he can see two women. Why should Roland see two women? He’s back in his own body, so isn’t looking through anyone else’s eyes or through the door.

There was also a strange turn of phrase as Roland shot the deer right at the end of the book. Susannah was described as standing behind him and watching. Maybe Stephen meant her version of standing, but for me the word jarred and it consequently took me significantly longer to realise who Susannah was.

Other than that, I loved this book. The lobstrosities scared me half to death!

Then, just when you think they’re settling down nicely to the last few pages which aren’t going to have anything majorly knee-jerking in them, Roland casually mentions that he once saw a man called Flagg who could do strong magic!!
