Name that Fantasy Book!

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Fantasy Novels: The Wizard's Sink: Name that Fantasy Book!

This is a board for people to ask about a book they vaguely remember but can't recall it's title or who wrote it.

By Merat on Saturday, November 10, 2001 - 4:09 pm:

I remember reading a book about ten years ago that was about a group of RPGamers who are sucked into a fantasy world. They become their characters and have to learn about their new world. I remember little bits and pieces of the story that might help someone in identifying this book. One of the heros (the dwarf I think) is in a wheelchair. Platinum money is worth the most. One of them becomes a wizard and blows up a crate almost as soon as he arrives. It was the first book in a series. Thanks for your help!

Joel Rosenberg's 7-volume Guardians of the Flame series: The Sleeping Dragon, The Sword and the Chain, The Silver Crown, The Heir Apparent, The Warrior Lives, The Road to Ehvenor, The Road Home. There are also at least two related novels about some of the minor characters: Not Exactly the Three Musketeers and Not Quite Scaramouche.

You're welcome.

Thank you Desmond, I've been trying to remember those books for 8 years now!!!!

No problem. I just read through the whole series at once about a year ago.

They seem to be quite difficult to get. I've got the first 4 I think.

By ScottN on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 8:25 am:

The last two are rather forgettable.

By Douglas Nicol on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 3:22 pm:

They were a good idea, but each book seemed to slowly decline.

Much the same happened with the very last two Spellsinger books, Son ofSpellsinger and Chorus Skating.

Here is another one. Many years ago I read a book about an ant colony, whose title and author I can't remember. It was a fantasy book. Vaguely Remembered Details: They are black ants and are threatened at one point by red ants. An old ant is missing a leg from a long ago battle. I believe the hero ant gets into a fight with a spider. I associate it with the book "The Gammage Cup" because it is written in a similar style. However, I have checked and it is not the same author. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Never read Chorus Skating, but I agree about "Son of Spellsinger".

I'm currently reading "Not Exactly the Three Musketeers". Comments will be posted when done.

Sounds like it might be "Empire of the Ants" by Bernard Werber, but that depends on how "many years ago" it was, as Werber's book was only translated from the French in 1996--I have it, but I haven't read it yet. As near as I can surmise, the plot revolves around the ants' relationship to humans, either via a direct interaction or a shared destiny, so it might not be the book you're thinking of. I think H. G. Wells has a book called "Empire of the Ants" as well, but I've got no clue what that might be about. So, actually, I guess I'm no help at all.

I'm afraid that "Empire of the Ants" is not it. This book came during the late 80s at the very latest. Thanks for trying though.

Okay, this is not a naming problem, but still ... I'm looking for two short stories of Marion Zimmer Bradley's, called "The Malice of the Demon" and "To Kill the Undead", respectively. I think both were published in her Fantasy magazine at one point, but it's virtually impossible to get the issues since they are all out of print. Anyone knows if they are included in any anthologies?

Earlier when I referred to the 'last two' Rosenberg books, I mean the two "Road" books, not the "Not Quite..." series.

Here's a series of books I can't remember the title of. They were written by Weis and Hickman and weren't Dragonlance, but they did seem to be centred around a band of Bedouin like people. The main character seemed to be a male wizard.
