The Road to Oz

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Fantasy Novels: L. Frank Baum: The Road to Oz

When the Shaggy Man arrives at the Emerald City and meets Ozma he tells her the truth about having stolen the Love Magnet, having previously lied about this to Dorothy. He says that he is now telling the truth because he has bathed in the Truth Pond, and no one who has bathed there can lie. However, he had earlier repeated his false account of his acquisition of the Magnet when he was at the Tin Woodman's palace, after bathing in the Pond. Why was he able to lie then? I think a "Baum Bugle" article once suggested that the Truth Pond's effect on him was delayed, but in "The Lost Princess of Oz" its effect on the Frogman seems to be immediate.

During the scene at the big banquet for Ozma's birthday near the end of the book, Baum includes the Candy Man of Merryland in a list of characters who are not made so they can eat. This contradicts "Dot and Tot of Merryland," the Baum book that introduced the Candy Man, which reveals that the race of candy people to which the Candy Man belongs eat candy and, moreover, will eat the pieces of the body of another candy person if he or she is broken beyond repair.

How did the Braided Man of Pyramid Mountain get to the party? And was anyone cruel enough to send him back where he came from?

Toto has changed from a Cairn terrier to a mixed bulldog-pug blend.

That tin palace of the Winkie emperor must be a real scorcher in the summertime. Or is it equipped with tin air conditioners?

Why didn't Ozma just use the magic belt and whisk Dorothy to her party without all the trouble? (I know, I know, short book...)

Me again. I think this is the first instance we see of Ozma wearing her crown instead of her coronet. That thing can't be more than 2.5 inches in diameter and can't be less than 5 inches high. How on earth does it stay on her head?

Polychrome is a fairly basic damsel in distress in this book. But in book 12 she demonstrates a good set of magical powers. Frankly, she's pretty self-sufficient in book 12.

I am surprised at Princess Ozma... or at least her court fashion designer. The Oz court provides such great outfit for its guests, couldn't they provide something for the Shaggy Man that didn't make him look like a Shi Tzu lapdog?
