As Baum pointed out in a letter to John R. Neill at the time of this book's publication, while the book's text says that there was only one peach on the peach tree discovered by Button-Bright in the Great Orchard, Neill's color plate of the scene shows two peaches. Since many editions of the Oz books over the years have omitted the color plates this picture is absent from many copies of the book, but it is present in the recently published edition from Books of Wonder (and possibly in the one from Dover Publications as well--I'm not sure if it is or not).
This picture I mentioned above is in fact present in the Dover Publications edition of the book.
The Little Pink Bear has to be the most annoying informant in Oz. Why didn't it just say to begin with that Ozma was in the Enchanted Peach stone? More importantly, when Button-Bright is rescued from the pit and confusion arises as to whether Ozma is in the hole or not, why doesn't somebody ask the little pink weasel for more specifics?
Where is the Good Witch of the North during all this upheaval and why doesn't Ugu steal her magic wand and her magic hat that gives advice when asked? Given that he doesn't, why don't Glinda and the Wizard send to her for assistance when they discover their tools stolen?
I think by this point in the Oz series, Baum has more or less forgotten that the Good Witch of the North existed. Unless I'm mistaken, the Good Witch of the North's last appearance in a Baum book was a brief cameo in 'The Road to Oz', and she isn't even mentioned again in later books. When it's stated that only Glinda and the Wizard are allowed to legally practice magic, one has to wonder what happened to the Good Witch of the North. Did she disappear or something?
