Casting Harry Potter

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Fantasy Novels: The Wizard's Sink: Casting Harry Potter
By Gordon Lawyer on Tuesday, November 23, 1999 - 1:44 pm:

You've probably heard that a Harry Potter movie will be coming out in 2001 (or around there). Let's suggest some actors for some roles. Since I'm unfamiliar with kid actors, I'll only be able to suggest roles for the adults. Here are a few:

Dumfledorf:Alec Guiness
Snape:Ben Kingsley
Quirrell:Michael Palin

By Jessica on Thursday, December 02, 1999 - 2:46 pm:

Harry Potter: The kid in _Wide Awake_ (main actor; I forget his name).

Agreed on Dumbledorf.

By Gordon Lawyer on Friday, December 10, 1999 - 11:45 am:

A few more suggestions:

Arthur Weasley: Patrick Stewart
Lockheart: Chris Barrie

By ScottN on Friday, December 10, 1999 - 12:07 pm:

McGonall (sp?) - Bebe Newirth (in full Lilth Sternin mode)

By Gordon Lawyer on Thursday, January 27, 2000 - 7:51 pm:

Hooch: Molly Sudgen
Pomfrey: Patricia Routledge
Nearly Headless Nick: John Inman
Fudge: Kelsey Grammer
Lupin: Sylvester McCoy(?)

By Kate on Thursday, February 10, 2000 - 5:49 pm:

Arthur Weasley played by Captain Picard!!!! Good grief! That's funny. I'd say get Jake Lloyd for Draco Malfoy

By ScottN on Friday, February 11, 2000 - 8:57 am:

Ohhhh! That's a good one, Kate!

By Gordon Lawyer on Friday, February 11, 2000 - 11:46 am:

Notice: The word out is that Warner Brothers (thankfully it isn't Disney that will do it) is taking auditions at British schools. So it's pretty pointless to speculate on who will play the kids.

By Gordon Lawyer on Monday, February 28, 2000 - 1:03 pm:

More suggestions:

McGonagall alternate: Penelope Keith
Filch: Colin Mocherie
Lucius Malfoy: Richard Gibson

By Gordon Lawyer on Thursday, March 30, 2000 - 8:26 am:

It's now official. The director for the film will be Chris Columbus.

By Gordon Lawyer on Thursday, July 06, 2000 - 7:46 am:

Many of you probably know this already, but I'll say it anyway. There's a rumor that the following will be casted:

McGonnagall- Maggie Smith
Snape- Tim Roth
Hagrid- Robbie Coltrane

Unfortunately, the Internet Movie Database didn't have any pictures of them, except for a lousy movie still with Roth (you couldn't see him that well). Anyone that knows of online pictures of the above please tell us.

By Douglas Nicol on Saturday, July 22, 2000 - 9:03 am:

Well JK Rowling has always stated that she wanted a British kid to play the part, but the studio has ignored her wishes and cast an 'all-american' jid who looks nothing like ANY of the images i've seen on book covers. he looks more like your californian 'beach bum' type.
Typical. :(

By Gordon Lawyer on Sunday, July 23, 2000 - 6:41 am:

Pardon, but what's your source? I've heard this at a newsgroup, but it kind of sounds like paranoid speculation. Though I admit I'm not all that impressed by Columbus's directing credits (I think Tim Burton would have been a better choice, and was surprised that he wasn't among the candidates).

By Douglas Nicol on Sunday, August 06, 2000 - 9:52 am:

Well its been changed YET again. I'm starting to think that they are going to take longer to cast the film than they will actually filming it.

By Gordon Lawyer on Sunday, August 06, 2000 - 1:33 pm:

What's been changed yet again?

A few more suggestions:

Crouch Sr.- Frank Thornton
Trelawny- Stella Foxfield (I think that's her name, she's the one that plays Rose on Keeping Up Appearances)
Wormtail- Jason Alexander
Voldemort (voice)- Guy Siner

By Gordon Lawyer on Monday, August 07, 2000 - 2:26 pm:

Just found out that Alec Guiness just died. Obviously, he won't be able to do the part of Dumbledore. James Noble, maybe?

BTW, it's okay to post casting rumors here, but please don't try to pass them off as facts until they're confirmed. Currently, the only ones that have been cast are Voldemort (CGI), Hedwig (can't remember the name), and Hogwart's (Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, which I believe is on the Northern Marches).

By ScottN on Monday, August 07, 2000 - 7:42 pm:

I would assume that Hedwig is also CGI, since she's an owl.

By Gordon Lawyer on Tuesday, August 08, 2000 - 7:38 am:

No, I understand she's going to be an actual owl.

By Callie Sullivan on Wednesday, August 09, 2000 - 4:33 am:

Alnwick again?!! Film makers are always using Alnwick Castle, and the problem is that it's far too recognisable, especially in long shots, because of the statues on the ramparts. Hopefully they'll be able to edit out some of the most recognisable features, or CGI in some new ones.

By Gordon Lawyer on Wednesday, August 09, 2000 - 9:23 am:

Update: Hogwart's is going to be played by Gloucester Cathedral, and not Alnwick.
The name of the owl that will be Hedwig is Ook.
People magazine reports that Patrick Stewart's agents are negotiating a role for him. Though I think he should be Arthur Weasley, the only casting I'd object to is Snape (I saw him as Scrooge, and in my opinion, he wasn't mean enough to do that role, so he wouldn't be mean enough to be Snape).

By ScottN on Wednesday, August 09, 2000 - 10:25 am:

Links, guys! LINKS!

P.S. Gordon. I've always pictured Snape as either a "Snidely Whiplash" sort of guy, or as a Peter Lorre type.

By Jon Wade on Friday, August 11, 2000 - 4:56 pm:

The Internet Movie Database reported that Richard Harris is going to play Dumbledore, and Alan Rickman is going to play Snape, I believe.
How's this for Hagrid... Richard Kiel... "Jaws" From James Bond.
Take a man who's 7'2, put him in lift shoes and a fat suit, enhance that through computer effects, and you've got a great giant.
Sure he's in his 60's, walks with a cane and is American, but he'd be good.

By Gordon Lawyer on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 - 6:58 am:

We now have two official castings. Maggie Smith is going to be McGonagall and Robbie Coltrane is going to be Hagrid. Anyone know of some online pictures of these two?

By Jessica on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 - 10:40 am:

I second the request for links. Please! Let us know where this information is coming from--and direct us there!

Happy?

By Jessica on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 11:30 pm:

Very. Thanks!

By Sarah Perkins on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 7:51 pm:

Harry Potter has been cast, as have Ron and Hermione! Go to the link above to find pics and more info.

Also, John Williams has been hired to score the film. Is this going to be cool or what?!

By ScottN on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 - 10:08 am:

Somehow, I can't picture Patrick Stewart as Quirrell... go figure.

By Gordon Lawyer on Thursday, August 24, 2000 - 7:15 am:

Well, he's wearing a turban about the whole time. If it weren't for the fact that he hasn't aged well, I would think Michael Palin would be a shoe-in for Quirrell (his character in A Fish Called Wanda I thought was very Quirrell-like).
Concerning Maggie Smith as McGonagall, doesn't she seem a bit aged for the role?

By trekkerxphile on Monday, December 18, 2000 - 10:04 pm:

I say Ewan McGregor would be the perfect Lupin, but that's just me.

Wouldn't a teen idol like Leo DiCaprio be perfect for Lockhart?

Just my 2¢ worth. speculation is fun. . . .

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Monday, December 18, 2000 - 10:47 pm:

Mrah. That woman they've got playing McGonagall is way too old. I always pictured her as being an early middle-aged woman who'd had all the fun sucked out of her. (At least, that's the only side of herself she'd let her students see.) Look at her in the first chapter of the first book, she's really emotional and stuff. I always thought she was rather young there, late 20s or early 30s, so by the time she taught Harry she'd be into her 40s. Definitely NOT as old as Dame Maggie Smith. Bebe Neuwirth definitely has the look, but I suppose they wanted to keep it British.

On the other hand, that's Hermione if I ever saw her.

Assuming they get to him, Lockhart HAS to be William Shatner. An aging wizard with oodles of fan mail despite a lack of any actual talent. He'd be perfect.

By ScottN on Tuesday, December 19, 2000 - 1:27 am:

Matthew, me too... As I posted earlier, Bebe Neuwirth in full Lilith Sternin mode.

By trekkerxphile on Saturday, December 30, 2000 - 1:24 pm:

Shatner as Lockhart would be good, but I always though Lockhart was a younger man? Maybe not.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Saturday, December 30, 2000 - 2:44 pm:

He probably is supposed to be younger, but it'd be funnier if he weren't.

By Jenny Observer on Saturday, December 30, 2000 - 3:16 pm:

I also think that it should be trekkerxphile's first suggestion for Gilderoy Lockhart, in a "Muhahahahahahaha, his memory gets wiped" kind of way, not in a "sigh" kind of way.

By ScottN on Friday, January 19, 2001 - 9:45 am:

Does Maggie Smith have black hair? I'm rereading Sorceror's Stone, and in the first chapter, McGonagall is specifically described as having black hair, pulled into a bun. (Sort of like Janeway's Bun O' Steel).

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, January 19, 2001 - 11:42 am:

From the picture I saw, she doesn't. Her hair is white.

Again, they really need to go with someone younger.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Thursday, March 01, 2001 - 11:57 am:

Anyone seen the trailer yet? Looks fantastic. Everyone except McGonagall is great. (I'm sorry, she's way too old.)

By Gordon Lawyer on Friday, March 02, 2001 - 10:00 am:

Here's a site that gets updated more frequently than the above site: http://www.mouthofsauron.com

It's got a really nifty Flash opening.

By Padawan Observer on Tuesday, July 24, 2001 - 2:46 pm:

NONONONO!!!!

I hope it's a joke... apparently Celine Dion will be recording a song over the closing credits called The Boy Who Lived.

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
