The Earth is invaded by flying brains. Since Fry is so stupid, he is immune to the effects of the brains. After several stupid things happen, Fry saves the day. (Or so he claims because no one else remembers this episode.)

The brain creatures destroying planets seems to be a reference to Star Trek's Operation - Annihilate!

Nibbler's homeworld being in the center of the universe could be a reference to DC Comics' Guardians of the Universe whose homeworld was also in the center of the universe, I believe.
