2ACV03- A Head in the Polls

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Futurama: Season Two: 2ACV03- A Head in the Polls
Disgusted with Fry’s apathy about politics, Leela tries to get Fry to register to vote. A disaster in a titanium mine increases the price of titanium. Since a large portion of Bender’s body is titanium, her sells his body. He visits the head museum’s Hall of Presidents. He learns that Richard Nixon’s head misses his body. Bender regrets his decision and heads back to the pawn shop, but his body has been bought.

The buyer is Richard Nixon’s head. Attached to Bender’s body, Nixon’s head announces his plans to run for president. Despite his problems at a presidential debate, his body turns out to be quite charismatic. Fry, Bender, and Leela try to convince Nixon to return Bender’s body. When that doesn’t work, they break into Nixon’s Watergate hotel room and try to steal the body. However, they awake Nixon. He starts ranting about how he is bitter and crazy and the rest of his evil plans. To Nixon’s dismay, Bender records incriminating Nixon’s evil plans. Blackmailing Nixon, Bender gets his body back. However, Nixon’s head gets himself a gigantic robot body and wins the election.

One thing I don't get is why once Bender wants his body back don't they simply make a new body for him? I mean how hard can it be? Surly they could replicate one or something?

since George Bush died a very long time ago I don't see how they could have his head preserved.

I know I've seen that green alien before as a bad guy in something. Where is he from?

By Mark Morgan on Sunday, December 12, 1999 - 10:14 pm:

Professor Farnsworth is officially my hero, for sticking to the important issues: "What are you doing to support my right to own doomsday weapons?"

Oh, here's a nit: "Why would Nixon stay at the Watergate Hotel?" "They give you a discount if you've been here before." G. Gordon Liddy and his group of plumbers broke in, not Nixon.

Myself, I'd elect Morbo in a heartbeat....because puny humans need guidance. "Long life, and death to his enemies."

By Dan R. on Sunday, December 12, 1999 - 11:01 pm:

Chris, when did George Bush die?
Also that comment could be made about Nixon himself or any other president.

That green guy has always been the news anchor on the show.

And they could not get his body back or make a new one because they had no resources. Remember they said those robots were trapped and Titanium was in short supply. (at least thats what I got from it)

By Mark Morgan on Sunday, December 12, 1999 - 11:19 pm:

Chris is right, though. Morbo is clearly a reference to a classic black-and-white movie (or television), alien, and although I can see him in my head the actual name of the show will just not come out. Grrr...time to sleep on it.

By Lea Frost on Sunday, December 12, 1999 - 11:32 pm:

George Bush is still alive. Methinks Chris meant to say Washington...

And I thought Morbo looked really familiar, too! Of course, I can't place him either. Arrrrgh!

By G. Hans on Monday, December 13, 1999 - 5:38 am:

I liked the Washington Monument/Clinton Monument.

Bender's car reminded me of something, but I can't remember what.

The Brain Slugs were quite amusing, as were John Jackson and Jack Johnson.

No nits from this end.

PS-I've heard that some Fox Show called "Malcolm in the Middle" will be taking Futurama's time slot in mid-January, and that Futurama will disappear for a month, and come back in another time slot. Any confirmations/clarifications?

Oops sorry 'bout the error I meant George Washington. Just shows the need for proof reading.

By Keith Alan Morgan on Monday, December 13, 1999 - 6:16 am:

Morbo is based on an alien from the film This Island Earth.

When Bender chased Nibbler around I thought it might be a reference to the old Chuck Wagon commecials.

When Bender's head is leeping he's doing it in a tiny bed, but in I, Roommate Bender would just sleep standing up.

Nixon's new body looked like something from Japanese anime film.

It was hard to see, but one of the political parties was the Rainbow Whigs.

A missed opportunity: Titanium is known as the nymphomaniac metal because when you heat it up it mixes with anything. How could the writers miss the obviously humorous potential of that???

Any confirmations/clarifications? Look under "Announcements" on this board for details and a link to a story (offsite). Groening's none too happy about it.

Huge political nit: The US constitution does not prohibit anyone from running for a third term. It only prohibits a President from serving for more than 10 years. Nixon was only president for about 6 years, therefore he has 4 years of eligibility remaining. Also, Nixon was only President of the US, not the world, so he should be able to serve as many terms as anyone else.

PS I like the Clinton Memorial and The 60th President monument. (I was hoping that Lincoln's chair would look more like Capt. Kirk's.)

Anti-nit. Nixon was running for President of Earth, not President of the US.

Since there are so many heads in the museum of people dead before 1999, I have to assume there's some cloning going on. Though why they'd only clone the head, I couldn't say.

By Lea Frost on Monday, December 13, 1999 - 4:12 pm:

Keith, thanks for pointing out that Morbo is based on the aliens from "This Island Earth"! I KNEW he looked familiar!

By Mark Morgan on Monday, December 13, 1999 - 5:48 pm:

Huge political nit: The US constitution does not prohibit anyone from running for a third term. It only prohibits a President from serving for more than 10 years. It's two terms. You can only serve as president a maximum of ten years if you finish off someone else's term as part of that term in office. So if there's more than two years left when you take over for someone else, you can only be elected and serve one more time because a second elected term would put you over ten years.

You can of course run as many times as you want....

By Mark Morgan on Monday, December 13, 1999 - 5:50 pm:

P.S. Thanks for the movie connection, Keith. It's the little things that drive you nuts!

"I've never considered voting an essential part of the election process."

By Al Fix on Friday, December 17, 1999 - 2:59 pm:

Morbo also looked like the guys from "Invasion of the Saucer Men."

Anyone notice the head destined to be next after the 5 or six most recent Presidents? It was Jesse "The Head" Ventura!

I really like the animation styles in this episode. Sometimes they use some sort of 3D technique that makes things look more realistic (i.e. the scene where Bender speeds away in his little car and crashes, and Nixon's robot attack.)

I thought Nixon's robot looked much like one of the Robotech mecha.

Al: That's what I said to my dad! But he thought I was being an idiot.

At the end of this episode, Robo-Nixon breaks through the White House wall, but the White House was destroyed in "When Aliens Attack."

By Chris Thomas on Friday, March 24, 2000 - 5:12 pm:

If Bender has a self-destruct button, why did he need that suicide booth in the first episode?

Best Line: (retranslated from the german version)
Fry: I don't care about the president of the world, I'm american.
Leela: Fry, America belongs to the world!
Fry: Oops, that shows how much time I missed.

I think this sums up the view many americans seem to have today *g*

Of course, the irony of how much one vote counts is driven to the point: nixon is elected by one vote, so if fry and leela had gone and voted against him, he would have lost by one vote! (Of course, he might have gone on a rampage anyway, out of anger, or to try out his new robotic body...)

I was thinking of Gizmo in the film Gremlins.

BEST MOMENT: Once again audio cassettes threaten to end Nixon's presidential campaign.

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 9:13 pm:

The Twilight Zone parody is from an episode starring Burgess Meredith.

When Leela & Fry climb the rope, it reminded me of Batman TOS.
