2ACV12- The Deep South

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Futurama: Season Two: 2ACV12- The Deep South
Due to a mix-up in paperwork, the crew has to go fishing. They have little success until Bender catches an enourmous bass. The fish pulls the ship to the depths of the ocean, nearly destroying it.

While stranded at the bottom of the ocean, Bender, Zoidberg, and Fry go looking for food. Fry sees a mermaid, but nobody believes him. He goes to sleep, and the mermaid lures him out. Umbriel, the mermaid, is smitten with Fry and the feeling is mutual. The crew searches for Fry, and they discover the long lost city of Atlanta. Atlanta sank years ago and its inhabitants evolved into half-fish people. Fry announces that he wishes to stay with Umbriel. However, anatomical differences prove too much, and Fry tries to get back. He ends up botching Bender's attempt at breaking a fishing record.

I loved the Inserection refrence with Bender saying his ass can serve as a flotation device.

Also what is a dewgong? (what the kernel mentioned at the end) (besides a pokemon)

When being dragged down why didn't they just power up the engines and get out of there?

By Murray Leeder on Sunday, April 16, 2000 - 11:11 pm:

A dugong is a manitee - a sea cow.

If the deep sea vent was 4000° wouldn't Fry & Umbriel be cooked?

Really? Then it's a great inside joke as it's believed that people first began believing in Mermaids after seeing manitee's . I'm not sure how they made the mix up though as a manitee looks nothing like a mermaid.

If they got the pokemon name from that then why in the game does it say dewgong is a sea lion?

By Mike Konczewski on Monday, April 17, 2000 - 12:46 pm:

A dugong is a herbivorous marine mammal, Dugong dugon, of tropical coastal waters of the Old World, having flipperlike forelimbs and a deeply notched tail fin.

A sea lion is any of several seals of the family otariidae, having small but distinct external ears, esp. Zalophus californianus, of the Northern Pacific.

A sea cow is any of several marine mammals of the order Sirenia, such as a manatee or dugong.

Incredible as it may seem, Pokemon cards are not a good source of zoological information. ;-)

By Chris Booton (Cbooton) on Monday, April 17, 2000 - 3:28 pm:

You mean there are no electric mice, phycic cats , giant rats or talking cats?

Speaking of Sea Lions, would they really swim down that deep? The mermaids only seemed to stay at the bottom so I dought they would go to the surface.

Also there is no way fry or anyone from the surface would survive down there with all of the water presure.

Just how did the people down there survive before 'evolving' into mermaids? If caffiene can speed up the evolution process then that explains why Janeway evolved so fast in threshold.

I find it hard to believe that Leela someone who loves animals would use a harpoon to fish. She seems to be more of the catch it then let it go type.

By Jason on Monday, April 17, 2000 - 4:02 pm:

The reason all the surface dwellers could survive the pressure was because the professor invented an anti-pressure pill.

You forgot a reference....Dr. Zoidberg was really in high form with his "Curly" imitations....he really got to ham it up, this time. I about spewed pepsi out my nose when the old fart sprayed fish pheromone on his head and Zoidberg slobbered all over his head!!!! this was one of the funniest eps ever.

You also forgot the inserection refrence when Bender says "my ass can serve as a flotation device"

By Keith Alan Morgan on Tuesday, April 18, 2000 - 12:36 am:

I thought Umbriel was a variation of The Little Mermaid's Ariel.

The Ted Turner statue was put on a SeaNN sign.

Racism reference as Fry couldn't visit Zoidberg's place because he was trying to get into the country club.

Who or what was The Magician refering to?

As for sailors confusing Sea Cows for mermaids, well:
1. They probably didn't get that close to them & thought they saw something that appeared half-person/half-fish;
2. When they told people about these things they saw the stories were probably exagerated and the artists who drew these things were probably landlubbers;
3. They were lonely, horny & desperate. (The Sea Cows all get prettier at closing time. ;-)

My grandparents loved animals a lot and also fish occasionally. They are definately not the catch it and let it go type. (Granted, they don't use harpoons, but my point remains the same.)

By Al Fix on Tuesday, April 18, 2000 - 10:35 am:

Could the Magician be a reference to the old TV show starring Bill Bixby? Did it take place in Atlanta perhaps? (Seems unlikely, but I'd still like to know the story behind the joke.)

By KAM on Tuesday, April 18, 2000 - 7:50 pm:

I thought of that show, but the figure didn't look like Bill Bixby.

Acording to the Futurama newsgroupthe Antlanta thing was a parody of an introdction to a song about Antlanta from the 60's sung by Donovan, here is the last verse...

Knowing her fate, Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the Earth. On board were the Twelve: The poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist, The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends. Though Gods they were - And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind Let us rejoice and let us sing and dance and ring in the new Hail Atlantis!

I thought the Magician reference was from that really short lived cartoon on FOX, "The Magician". Wasn't it set in Atlanta?

By Chris Thomas on Sunday, June 04, 2000 - 9:06 pm:

Did anyone feel the underwater city might also have been a slight nod to Gunga City in The Phantom Menace? The device Fry is given to breathe underwater was also reminiscent of similar apparatus used by Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan when they dive down to the city with Jar Jar Binks.

By Nawdle on Monday, June 05, 2000 - 9:32 pm:

I thought that as well Chris and I never posted it. Too late now.:(

By Douglas Nicol on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 11:46 am:

I think the chase sequence when Fry was hanging onto the 'hook' behind the Planet Express ship was a nod to the underwater chase sequence in Phantom Menace as well.

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 10:29 am:

Another refernce: Curly Howard...The Three Stooges.
Zoidberg going "Whoop whoop whoop!" just like Curly.

BEST LINE: "Problems in bed" Amy whispering to Leela when Fry announces that he broke up with the mermaid.

By John A. Lang on Saturday, August 23, 2003 - 6:09 pm:

The old cartoon on the big screen was a WWII Daffy Duck cartoon

BEST LINE (Runner up) Umbriel: "Oh! You speak fish? Bblblblblbllb!"
