2ACV15- The Problem With Popplers

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Futurama: Season Two: 2ACV15- The Problem With Popplers
Warning: Futurama is for external use only.

In this episode, the crew discovers Popplers, The 31st Century's most popular fast food. After bringing shiploads of Popplers, Toronga Leela discovers that they are intellegent. Later, it is discovered that Popplers are the pupil stage of Omicron Perseians (from "When Aliens Attack"). They demand to eat one person for each Poppler that was eaten, thus threatening to destroy the Earth, again. After negotiating with Capt. Brannagan, the Perseians agree to eat only one person, a hippy. And the crowds cheered.

Yes, we're open for business

This was an interesting episode. I liked the Star Trek reference: The type M planet having Roddenberries.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Sunday, May 07, 2000 - 9:39 pm:

The title is a Star Trek reference: The Problem with Popplers/The Trouble with Tribbles.

Glad they finally said what Fry's first name is.

By ScottN on Monday, May 08, 2000 - 1:01 am:

That was established in the pilot.

By ScottN on Monday, May 08, 2000 - 9:26 am:

However, I think this is the first time we find out Leela's first name.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Monday, May 08, 2000 - 9:52 am:

Leela's first name is a reference to Boy Meets World. On that show, they have a charater named Topenga, which sounds a little like Toronga. BTW, Boy Meets World ended 2 days before this episode aired.

The girl on BMW is "Topanga", a reference to "Topanga Canyon" in Los Angeles. Many hippies live in Topanga Canyon, though it has been gentrified recently.

Futurama is brought to you by Molten Boron! Nobody does it like Molten Boron!

I loved the part where that giant billboard is showing a commercial for Fishy Joe's and Leela crashes through it...
Fry: "Leela! That's the second time this week you crashed through that billboard!"
The first time of course is in the credits. :-)

Great lines of the week:
"I found some Rocks! You guys eat rocks, right?"
"No."
"Not even sautaed in mud?"

or
"This thing on my wrist says it's edible."
or
"They're pretty tasty...lets call them Tasticuls."

LOL

Another reference in this episode was the Mcdonalds sign and how it changes...
"Over 1 sold...over 500,000....1 MILLION sold"
then "over 3.8 X 10 to the 10th power sold"

I loved after the alien eats the hippy and he gets high. "My hands...they can touch everything...except themselves...oh..."
It was histerical they way he was fasicanted by his cape. LOL

By Matt Pesti on Tuesday, May 09, 2000 - 7:55 pm:

Methinks no one would make a reference to "Boy meets world". Did anyone watch that show at all, or did ABC have nonthing better to air?

Great Lines:" I can own property because I'm not a dirt poor hippie"

Dan R, re: "Nobody does it like Molten Boron!"
I thought the phrase said was "Nobody *doesn't* like Molten Boron!"

The name Taronga: there is a Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney, Australia, but I don't know if that's the connection.

The scene where the Omicron Perseians ships are in the sky was reminiscent of Mars Attacks!

If Chris is right, that's a tribute to an old Sara Lee commercial. "Everybody doesn't like something! But nobody doesn't like Sara Lee!"

By Chris Thomas on Tuesday, June 27, 2000 - 3:29 am:

That's what I thought it was - a nod to the Sara Lee jingle.

Where was Morgo in this episode? TV News without Morgo - tststs...

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Tuesday, April 03, 2001 - 7:57 am:

Who is Morgo?

If you mean MORBO, the news monster, it must be his day off. He was busy conquring the galaxy, or something. He seems like he is an evil Kath Lee Gifford, IMHO.

I liked the PETA reference.

Mankind for Ethical Animal Treatment- M.E.A.T. :)

GREAT MOMENT: Zapp asks Kiff to clear Zapp's schedule. Kiff then pulls out an ETCH A SKETCH and shakes it.
