I hope I've got the right episode for this, but when Data tricks the bridge crew into leaving because he's forced a failure of life support, why is it he's able to speak to the computer? Without molecules to conduct sound, it would be impossible for the computer's microphones to hear Data. I'm surprised Phil didn't include this in his Nit-Pickers Guide-- both editions.

By Chris Booton (Cbooton) on Tuesday, September 07, 1999 - 12:28 pm:

Perhaps the air did not get drained right away. Perhps it was just that new new air was being supplied and as a result they had to evacuate because it would not take long for the air to run out.

By Steve McKinnon on Tuesday, September 07, 1999 - 2:16 pm:

On the other hand, 'life support failure' could also cover too much nitrogen and not enough oxygen in the air, thus allowing Data to communicate with the computer. Still, it's a Nit that Phil didn't include in his book.

By Will S. on Monday, August 21, 2000 - 10:25 am:

Worf's sensors show no life formsi n Lore's ship, so doesn't that prove that Lore and Data are not 'alive', proving the point from 'Measure Of A Man'?
And why totally disassemble Lore, and build Data? If programming is the issue, why not just build a new head (Data's), and attach it tothe original body (Lore's)?

By ScottN on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 8:46 am:

Will, I assume that Worf is looking for *ORGANIC* life forms.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Monday, July 23, 2001 - 3:12 am:

That recall device of Soong's seems rather rude. Wouldn't it have been better if Soong had programmed it to have his `sons' finish what they were doing, then if necessary request time off from whatever organization they were a part of? (What if this thing had been activated when Data was with Yar in The Naked Now, or with Jenna D'Sora during In Theory? "What are you doing on the bridge out of uniform? And put that thing away before you hurt someone.") Much better would to have it just tell Data that he should travel to such and such coordinates as soon as possible and come alone.

Soong does come off as rather antisocial. When he wants Data to come to him he activates a device that forces Data to stop what he's doing and steal a ship. When he escaped from Omicron Theta he didn't bother telling anyone about the crystalline entity. For that matter, the colonists themselves didn't send word of the Crystalline Entity, despite seeing it and surviving it. (If they didn't survive the initial encounter, how could they build their underground complex and have their kids draw pictures of it?)

Data is third in command of the ship, but his command code is "Alpha 1." Picard is Captain of the ship, but his command code is "Alpha 2." Is it just me or does this seem wrong? Also shouldn't something as vital as a command code use unusual and harder to figure out words and letters than just Alpha 1 & 2? (Like on an episode of Babylon 5 when it is revealed that Mr. Garibaldi's code is "Peekaboo." As the character said, "Would you have figured it out?")

Shouldn't the Security teams have been waiting for Data just outside of the turbolift doors instead of down the hall?

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, July 23, 2001 - 11:58 pm:

KAM: That recall device of Soong's seems rather rude. What if this thing had been activated when Data was with Yar in The Naked Now?

Luigi Novi: She'd probably make a very comment complaint that women make of men.

"You always DO that! You never stick around to make sure that I'M satisified! You men are all alike! Pig!" :)

By Anonymous on Tuesday, December 25, 2001 - 1:57 pm:

Phill Says in his book, that the Panel in the turbolift makes it's first apperance in this episode, and on the back cover he implies that Brothers is the only episode where it shows up, stating "Is there a Control Panel in the Turbolift? (No except in the Episode Brothers)" but later in the book, Pg. 399 Under Equipment Oddities, he says "The Panel is Back" citing that it is also in Powerplay, most of these 2 Page Nits that I have investigated, can be Sigma'd by understanding that the Enterprise, swings from starbase to starbase and that there is elapsed time that we are unaware of, for Crew interactions and ship modifications.

By kerriem on Tuesday, December 25, 2001 - 8:26 pm:

"2 Page Nits"?

Certainly the Enterprise could have been retrofitted between eps. But why would they want to put a panel on the turbolift, take it off, and put it back on again?

(And Anonymous, no offense, but run-on sentences, separated only by commas, are very hard, to read, please, try to use periods next time? :))

By Doug B. on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 - 12:12 am:

I think senior officers get to make up their own command codes, because if someone from Starfleet Command sent them to each officer, there would be the possibility of a security breach and it would be harder to remember them.

For example, in First Contact, "Picard four seven alpha tango". I would assume Old Baldy made that one up himself.

NANJAO: Brent Spiner shines as Data, Lore & Soong

By John A. Lang on Sunday, September 15, 2002 - 8:17 pm:

In "Generations", Data installs his emotion chip. Where did he get it? Certainly not from this episode, Lore took it! AND Soong said there was only ONE chip!

Data and Lore

By Nemysis on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 8:14 pm:

I haven't seen this episode in a long time, and I've only just now begun watching it on DVD....

heres something I just thought of...

WHY IS THERE A POTENTIALLY DEADLY PLANT on the ship that CHILDREN have access too? If you listen to the conversation Riker has with Willy's brother, the "Cove Palm" is right there in the arboretum and theres nothing to stop children or anyone else from trying to eat it.

Man, that really is ••••••. Thats like putting mine field in a playground.

By Callie Sullivan on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 3:22 am:

The plant was down on the planet they were visiting, not in the Enterprise's arboretum.

At the end of the episode the boys are playing with toy dinosaurs which Data brought from Soong's lab. Hang on: when Data got his memory back Riker made it clear that they were in a really big rush to get the Enterprise to Starbase (whatever) to save Willy's life. Not only does Data take time out to have a final chat with his dad, but he also stops to grab a few souvenirs?!

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 7:51 am:

Let me get this straight...the boys were on an ALIEN PLANET and one of them decides to pick the fruit off an ALIEN PLANT and eat its ALIEN FRUIT? Didn't the parents teach their kids about the dangers of doing this? I mean...just because a piece of ALIEN FRUIT looks "yummy", that doesn't mean it's safe to eat!!! Where's the D.C.F.S. when you need them?

By Brian Fitzgerald on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 10:37 am:

Sounds realistic to me. Parents try to teach their kids to do lots of things and they don't always listen. Most parents try to teach their kids to say no to drugs, not have sex, not drive too fast, do their homework, respect their elders; and not all of the do.

By Anonymous on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 4:49 pm:

I thought the kid who ate the fruit was intentionally trying to hurt himself because he thought he had killed his brother.

Stupid is as stupid does.

By Snick on Thursday, January 06, 2005 - 10:42 am:

Stupid isn't censored.

By Benn on Thursday, January 06, 2005 - 10:48 am:

When did that change? My understanding is that the Chief felt the word "stupid" was inappropriate and thus verboten on Nitcentral.

Live long and prosper.

By Darth Sarcasm on Thursday, January 06, 2005 - 10:52 am:

Guess he changed his mind...

By Butch the Moderator on Thursday, January 06, 2005 - 6:15 pm:

OK, take any further "stupid" discussion to the Kitchen Sink.

By Captain Bryce on Saturday, June 18, 2005 - 8:10 am:

Those dinosaurs who Soongs? I don't remember seeing them in the lab.

By Mr. Crusher on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 7:25 pm:

I won't be watching this episode until tomorrow, but doesn't Dr. Crusher or someone say that Data got those Dinosaurs fromm Soongs lab? Just because you might not have seen them there doesn't mean they wernt.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, January 27, 2006 - 11:51 am:

If you're referring to the figurines that the brothers play with at the end of the episode, no, no one said that, unless there's a director's cut of the episode or something that I missed.

By Mr. Crusher on Friday, January 27, 2006 - 4:49 pm:

On the DVD, 23 minutes into the episode, Dr. Soong in facts picks up one of the Dinosaurs and moves it to another table. This is not a directors cut, it is the oringinal brodcast episode. Purhapes Captain Bryce should watch closer next time.

By Mr. Crusher on Friday, January 27, 2006 - 5:26 pm:

At the end of the episode, Picard does say "well Mr. Data, your gifts seem to have been well recieved."

By LUIGI NOVI on Saturday, January 28, 2006 - 9:43 am:

Ah. I see. Point taken. :)

By Andrew Gilbertson (Zarm_rkeeg) on Saturday, August 30, 2008 - 2:14 pm:

So... pretty much every nit on this board minus the turbolift and recal device ones are the result of someone not paying enough attention to the episode? :-) I find that strangely amusing...

Having just re-watched this episode, I found that I really enjoyed it, and was surprised at Spiner's portrayal of Lore... seemed to have a lot more depth, especially when confronted with Soong's impending death. But sheesh, unless Soong intended to drop dead as soon as he finished installing the chip, he could have at least suggested the possibility of helping Lore after he was finished with Data. His attitude in the episode seemed to be "Well, I'm all but dead, so it's too late to help you now that you're hear and we have time togther. What a darn cryin' shame."
