What exactly were the differences between what happened in Voyager's "Memorial" episode and what happened in this episode? It would seem to me that crew members from both ships were violated.

By Keith Alan Morgan on Friday, February 04, 2000 - 11:53 pm:

The 2 main differences are that in Memorial, no one got their jollies off the crew's violations & no one went into a coma, but it is the same offense.

By Aaron Dotter on Monday, April 09, 2001 - 5:03 pm:

I am surprised that Picard did not consider the possibility that the Ullian(who was probing Troi) might plant or change evidence. After all, they were all suspects.

By KAM on Thursday, July 26, 2001 - 4:30 am:

Why does Troi's memory show herself? Is it part of the Ullian influence? Also the coins are seen falling from a different perspective. (Actually this is something I hate when they show someone's 'memory', when the person who is supposed to be remembering can be clearly seen and things they couldn't see are shown. I suppose the only episode which did this right was Eye Of The Beholder where Troi saw a few moments of Walter Pierce's memories from his perspective.)

Crusher is going to check the biofilter from the transporter to see if any harmful organisms survived. Why would the transporter record show that a harmful organism wasn't filtered out? If the transporter knew the organism was harmful, wouldn't it have filtered it out? And if the transporter couldn't filter out the harmful organism don't you think that some kind of warning buzzer should go off and the transporter pad be sealed with a containment field?

I thought it rather funny when Worf referred to the Ullians as "aliens."

In the NextGen Guide, page 314, Phil mentions the planet Jarada III as one of the planets that the Ullians visited. The Star Trek Omnipedia however doesn't list Jarada III, but does list Hurada III as one of the planets visited by the Ullians.
If it had been Jarada III it would have made an interesting nit, since one, the Jarada live on Torona IV, two, as insectoids it seems unlikely that if they slipped into comas it would be diagnosed as Irisine syndrome, and three, with their strict adherence to protocol how long do you think someone with Tarman's personality would live?

By Mikey on Thursday, July 26, 2001 - 4:06 pm:

KAM: ***Why does Troi's memory show herself? ***

Though the memory was shot this way for the sake of drama, it is also not unusual for trauma survivors to become detached from their experiences, seeing it from the eyes of a third person.

The falling coins could also be a visual representation of what she remembers hearing, whether or not she actually saw them falling.

Our brains often use our imaginations to fill in the gaps our memories may leave. And they sometimes even conjure memories that never occured.

By KAM on Friday, July 27, 2001 - 1:59 am:

Also it could be that since the Ullian is rewriting this memory Troi is seeing it third person because it didn't happen that way.

By Las on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 7:20 pm:

I'm confused...did these memories actually happen? Did Riker really act that way towards Troi? Did Jack Crusher's eyes open or were these memories artificially made by Jev?

By Duke of Earl Grey on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 8:41 pm:

I always thought that these were real memories that Jev just messed around with. Riker and Troi really had a poker game, but who knows what else really happened after that? Picard and Beverly really viewed Jack's body, but none of the surreal stuff actually happened.

By King Mob on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 - 10:31 am:

I haven't seen this episode for years, but isn't Picards little speech about "forgiveness" a tad hypocritical given his feelings toward the Borg. especially in 'I, Borg'?

By John A. Lang on Thursday, November 07, 2002 - 9:29 pm:

GREAT SCENE: Troi fighting Jev...at one point she kicks him "where it counts" I found myself saying, "You go, girl!" during the whole scene.
(Followed by "Hands off, I belong to Ensign John A. Lang") :O (snicker, snicker)

By John A. Lang on Friday, November 08, 2002 - 4:27 am:

I don't believe that Riker tried to take Troi "downtown", I think it was Jev adding his own thoughts into Troi's memory....seeing what happened later.

By John A. Lang on Friday, December 27, 2002 - 7:30 pm:

The idea of telepathic rape would be used again in "Nemesis".

I must also say that it is POSSIBLE that Riker tried to take Troi "downtown"...seeing the way they looked at each other in "Encounter at Farpoint" (I just watched that episode again and put 2+2 together.)

By KAM on Saturday, December 28, 2002 - 3:06 am:

Shouldn't that be 1+1 or are you implying an orgy?

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 7:23 pm:

When Jev uses telepathic rape on Crusher, she flashes back to the time she & Picard went to look at Jack Crusher's dead body. My question is...what is that METALLIC THING on Picard's left temple?

By Electron on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 5:29 pm:

I always thought Picard too was injured during the ambush and that little thingie came from a first aid kit.

By Llinos on Wednesday, December 03, 2003 - 3:49 pm:

GREAT SCENE: Troi fighting Jev...at one point she kicks him "where it counts"

Yeah, I liked that bit, especially since right before that Jev was saying something like: 'You're so fragile, so delicate...' - he was obviously wrong!

My question is...what is that METALLIC THING on Picard's left temple?

According to the script, that was originally meant to be a bandage, but I guess they thought that wasn't futuristic enough and replaced it with that bit of metal, which I assume is some kind of dermal regenerator or something.

I don't believe that Riker tried to take Troi "downtown", I think it was Jev adding his own thoughts into Troi's memory....seeing what happened later.

Again referring to the script, this was her real memory up to a point - Deanna says that they shouldn't do this while they're serving on the same ship, they kiss, then it turns into the freaky Jev version of events.

A small point, this episode is referred to affectionately in my circle as 'Attack of the Doily People', due to the weird costumes the aliens have.

By aaron on Friday, November 25, 2005 - 7:46 pm:

It's been so long since I've seen this episode...
What do you mean by Riker taking Troi "downtown?"
Thanks.

By John A. Lang on Saturday, November 26, 2005 - 5:02 am:

Re:Aaron,

There was a scene in Troi's "flashback" where Riker grabbed D. Troi and had her lie down on the floor. That's what I meant by "downtown"

By gilbates on Saturday, February 18, 2006 - 9:40 am:

What's up with the ancient replicator panel in Troi's quarters?

By Anonymous on Saturday, March 04, 2006 - 3:34 am:

Dr. Crusher identifies the thalamus as a memory centre located in the cerebral cortex. Actually, it is part of the brainstem, and according to Wikipedia, governs sensory functions, not memory.

By Josh M on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 2:26 am:

I finally saw this one for the first time the other day. Eh, not my favorite. Poor Troi, with her empathic abilities, gets all of the mind abuse. And that didn't even come into play here!

quote:

KAM:

Just noting, all three flashbacks showed the person who is havingthe memory, not just Troi's.

I also love the continuation of that scene as Worf walks in, completely calmly just clocks the guy, and hands him to his security personnel without missing a beat. All in a days work as security chief on the Enterprise. :-)

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 6:33 pm:

Saw it again today.

Troi's fighting: (Blow by blow)

Slapped Jev's face

Kicked Jev "where it counts"

Kicked Jev in the shin

Smacked Jev in the head with a desktop computer pad

It's about time Marina Sirtis got an action scene.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Klingon) on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 10:00 pm:

The crew should have had a vulcan do a mindmeld wiht Troi while Jev was probing as the vulcan might be able to detect whether any "new" memories were being implanted.

---

Was Keiko the only one to try it? Were the rest too afraid of what they've done in the past to have it revealed in front of an audience or even to themselves?

---

The Ullians's should have probed Professor Moriarty. If Troi could detect a presence from him, I wonder if the Ullian's could get some memories from him, and if so, would that mean they are reading the mind of the Enterprise?

By Nick Brown (Howdydoodat) on Friday, April 24, 2009 - 4:05 am:

Just watched this episode again and noticed something I thiis odd. When Dr Crusher is found unconscious in her office. Data taps his communicator and call a medical team. Aren't they in the medical centre/sickbay the doors to the office are still open aren't there any medics there within earshot. It would seem odd to me if the head doctor's office, where she was conducting medical research, is not in the medical centre.

By Cyber (Cybermortis) on Friday, April 24, 2009 - 7:59 am:

The Enterprise D has more than one sickbay/medical area - after all the stated crew for the ship is some 1013 yet the sickbay we see only has about 6 beds.
It wouldn't therefore be that unusual if most of the medical staff were working elsewhere, and out of earshot.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Friday, April 24, 2009 - 9:00 pm:

Remember Me established that at least four medical personnel are on duty at all times in sickbay.

By Don F (TNG Moderator) (Dferguson) on Thursday, July 02, 2009 - 9:53 am:

For the most part my wife and I do not care for the episode. the exception being however, the infamous Troy action scene :-) To this day we cannot watch that scene without busting into laughter, especially when Worf walks in and uses the kung fu on him.

In regards to that scene I find myself wondering if the Ulian's rehabilitation of Jev is necessary, take note of the vacant look on Jev's face as Worf's staff hold him up. His eyes are rolling, his jaw is slack...clearly no one is home, I doubt he will ever be a thret to anyone again :-)

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, July 02, 2009 - 5:21 pm:

It could be that he's just dazed right there and then from Worf's dispatching of him, and not that he's permanently addled mentally.

By Don F (TNG Moderator) (Dferguson) on Friday, July 03, 2009 - 8:10 am:

perhaps. Though considering we have not see the character again in 17 years and considering how much Sci-Fi loves to resurrect bad guys, I think Jev is laying is a Ullian Hospital somewhere being tube fed ;)

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Friday, July 03, 2009 - 8:40 am:

Or a prison.

By Cyber (Cybermortis) on Friday, July 03, 2009 - 8:57 am:

This is the Federation we are talking about. They probably made him promise not to do that again, on pain of being talked to in a loud voice or (god forbid) someone using mildly offensive words to him...*Shudder* the ego damage could destroy him.....

By Don F (TNG Moderator) (Dferguson) on Friday, July 03, 2009 - 9:00 am:

Maybe. who knows maybe that is part of the Ulian Rehab process.

"Counselor Meriv's Log, Ulian Rehabilitation Clinic for Violent crimes, Patient Name Jev, Day 47. Jev's treatment was going well for the first 37 days but after switching to traditional methods the patient seems to reverting to his old behavior over the last week and a half thus we have decided to continue the treatment we administered for the first 37 days and are once again calling in Star Fleet Lt. Worf to "Talk" to the patient, I expect rapid results."

By Cyber (Cybermortis) on Friday, July 03, 2009 - 9:52 am:

"Counselor Meriv's Log, Ulian Rehabilitation Clinic for Violent crimes, Patient Name Jev, Day 52. Patient first treated by Lt Worf at 11;30. Patient received further treatments by Lt Worf at 12;30, 13;15, 13;41 and 14;10.

Patient transfused a total of 12.3 litres of blood, had skull fractures repaired twice and required facial reconstruction surgery at 2;15pm due to his habit of forcefully running into walls, doors, table, chair and Lt Worf's fists.

Lt Worf scheduled to commence further treatment tomorrow morning at 11;30. Lt Worf is confident that his 'Bat'leth' method will have astonishing effects at this time"

By Don F (TNG Moderator) (Dferguson) on Friday, July 03, 2009 - 10:05 am:

"Counselor Meriv's Log, Ulian Rehabilitation Clinic for Violent crimes, Patient Name Jev, Day 60:

The patient had to be revived twice today due to Lt. Worf's pain stick treatment. I will admit that at first his methods did seem shocking but considering we have not had to deal with a patient like Jev in centuries, we have no point of comparison. On the other hand I cannot dispute that the Lieutenant's technique is showing results. The patient no longer admits to having violent desires towards others....unfortunately the patient says little of anything these days other then "nononononononono" perhaps we will see more progress in future sessions. Lt Worf has applied for a permanent position on our staff, His enthusiasm is very promising, he truly seems to have a desire to want to help the patient."

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Friday, July 03, 2009 - 10:36 am:

That is a hilariously fantastic moment.

By Geoff Capp (Gcapp) on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 12:42 am:

Picard had just a bit too much hair on his head. I always thought that. After all, it was only 15 years ago (Wesley was 5 years old, now he's 19 going on 20).

By Andrew Gilbertson (Zarm_rkeeg) on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 6:49 am:

But necessary, to counter Nemesis' bit too little hair on his head. ;-)

By Andre Reichenbacher (Amr) on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - 8:27 pm:

Well, unfortunately, this was the first of two instances where Troi is "mentally raped" by an alien with powerful telepathic abilities. Of course, Shinzon would be just as smitten and obsessed with Troi as Jev was, and telepathically assault her with the help of his Viceroy. (And in one of Nemesis' deleted scenes, he does it to her again in a turbolift!)

I really wonder if anyone has mentioned this yet, but why didn't Jev just be honest with Troi and tell her how he felt about her? She was talking to him because he was upset that his father was belitting him in front of other people, and Betazoids are known for their openess and honesty, so why didn't Jev just ask her to dinner or something? Was he that afraid of rejection that it was then he felt the need to force himself into Troi's mind and assault her? I have to say, I just don't get it.

By the time Jev is attempting to mind-rape Troi a second time, we can all see that he is severely disturbed and quite mentally ill and needs incarceration for his crimes, as well as extensive medical treatment for his mental illness. I know that Don F. speculated on that on this thread already, with a humorous tone included with it. But I have to say, I really felt sorry for Jev. And I do wonder just what the punishment for his transgressions really would be, as his world had not had any of their people do this kind of thing for centuries.

Also, when Picard comments on Earth's past at the end of the show, it almost felt like we were back in the first season again, what with him saying "we were once violent and cruel to each other but thankfully we were able to evolve beyond that", or something to that effect. Uh, writers, this isn't the beginning of the series anymore, you can cut it out with the "past-bashing" and saying how much better humanity is now that we've evolved beyond all the things that made us an inferior and savage race.

Enough already. We Get It!!!!

Diana must really love the Enterprise A, because she has the UI for the replicator skinned with it's computer graphics.
