Does Picard ever ask Q what happened to Vash?

By Anita on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - 6:36 am:

There is a wierd moment in this one when Beverly and Troi are being briefed by the captain as to the situation with Q and Amanda. The possibility that the Qs might try to kill Amanda is disscussed, and Beverly thinks it would be too upsetting to let Amanda know this. What? She's a doctor for heavens sake! Does she mislead her patients this way when the prognosis is not good? It just seems a little out of character for a doctor.

By ScottN on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - 9:20 am:

"Amanda, I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but there's this group of omnipotent beings that want you dead."

Yeah, I think that might be a little upsetting...

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - 4:59 pm:

No, Josh, the subject never comes up again between them. The only nod to that bit of continuity is Q-Less(DS9).

By Anita on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - 8:03 pm:

"I'm sorry, She's going to die within the next day from this form of radiation, captain, but lets not tell her because it might upset her."

Yeah, that might upset me.

By Rene on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - 8:09 pm:

I agree with Anita. Keeping it from her would be very cruel.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, June 14, 2001 - 1:29 am:

All in the Family
Trivia: Olivia D’Abo, who plays Amanda Rogers, is the cousin of what recurring Trek actor? (Answer at the end of this episode’s entry.)
Riker gets instant access to all hot babes on the ship
Riker pushes a button on Amanda’s quarters after escorting her there in the beginning of the episode. Isn’t this a bit redundant? Don’t the doors open automatically?
Nah, they had Guinan speak to Amanda already
To prepare Amanda for meeting Q, they have Crusher speak with her first. She also meets later with Crusher after her first meeting with him. Shouldn’t Troi be in on this?
We find you guilty of not paying attention to established continuity, and sentence you to watch a nonstop marathon of EVERY BRANNON BRAGA EPISODE ever made!
When Picard mentions how Q put his crew on trial for the crimes of humanity, Q says the jury’s still out on that. That’s funny. Q told Riker in Act 2 of the episode Q Who that they were exonerated.
But who are James Tongo and Mary Domjot related to?
Trivia Answer: Chase Masterson, who plays Leeta on Deep Space Nine, who is ironically, a Dabo girl!

I believe that I've pointed this out before, but Q says lots of things that aren't true. It seems completely in character to lie back in Q Who because they were hanging it over his head that he put them on trial.

By ScottN on Thursday, June 14, 2001 - 3:16 pm:

Any Q episode after "Hide and Q" is a nit, because Q agreed on behalf of the continuum to butt out of humanity's affairs. Of course, it would be just like Q to lie about that, too! :)

By NarkS on Sunday, June 17, 2001 - 5:12 pm:

"Q says lots of things that aren't true."

Deathwish (VOY) would contradict that, although it's from a conversation between Q and Janeway. I can understand Q lying if he's a liar, but wouldn't Janeway remember this in pronouncing him unable to lie? (I could make so many comments to explain this, but I'll leave it to you)

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 5:12 am:

If they are testing tricorders shouldn't they test them on something which doesn't change over a period of minutes? Crusher runs one Tricorder over Amanda and tells her to compare those findings against the findings of the other Tricorders, but heart rate, breathing and other things in the human body can change over a short period of time. So the findings of a Tricorder run five minutes later may show different findings, but still be correct. It seems to me that the best way to run such a test would be to run two Tricorders at the same time over herself and check the findings against each other. If the Tricorder in the left hand has findings different from the Tricorder in the right hand then one must be wrong.

So did Q just leave Vash to fend for herself on some planet in the Gamma quadrant while he judged Amanda's abilities?

Q's attitude toward children in this episode is amusing in contrast to his becoming a parent in The Q And The Grey.

Q takes Picard from a meeting to his Ready Room, but when Picard leaves the Ready Room Data is sitting at Ops. So did Riker break up the meeting after Q took Picard?

Picard is wearing his one piece shirt when introducing Q to Amanda, then, after she slams Q into the wall, we see Picard and Q in the Ready Room and Picard is wearing his grey shirt and jacket, but then, referring to Amanda's slamming Q into the wall, Picard says, "She just did that." So did Picard and Q go to Picard's quarters so he could change his shirt or did Q just get tired of seeing Picard's one piece shirt and change it for him?

When Amanda slammed Q into the wall it appeared that a vase was broken, but later the vase is whole. Of course, either Q or Amanda could have repaired or replaced the vase.

Couldn't a machine be programmed to run the test on bacilli mitosis? Are these new bacilli? Shouldn't doctors have already run tests to determine which nutrients would work best? Or was all this just a 'make work' assignment for Amanda?

Why did Riker go to Sick Bay instead of just using the communications system?

The shot of Q and Amanda on the back of the Enterprise was lovely, but the scale seemed to be off. Did they make themselves giant size?

Neither Troi or Crusher seemed to notice Amanda's rather obvious attraction to Riker.

The tornado killed Amanda's parents in their house. So where was Amanda when this happened? She couldn't have been at school or a friend's house, because she was just a baby when they died.

The events from "Q-Less" suggest to me that not only did he leave Vash to fend for herself, but he did it early on and didn't ever go back to the Gamma Quadrant for her.

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, December 04, 2002 - 9:44 pm:

I have to agree with other members of the Guild on the award for the best "sight gag" on STTNG was Crusher being turned into a dog & back without her even noticing it.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, December 05, 2002 - 8:32 am:

I don't see why he couldn't be in two places at once. He is, after all, quasi-omnipotent.

By Rene on Thursday, December 05, 2002 - 8:29 pm:

And he was in two places at once in that Voyager episode. Sure, it was in the same room, but still...

Heck, it might even explain hwo he could be dating that other Q AND going around with Vash.

By John A. Lang on Thursday, December 05, 2002 - 9:22 pm:

Maybe yet another "Wizard of Oz " tribute? ...the tornado that killed Amanda's parents was in Kansas! (You decide)

GREAT SCENE: Q & Amanda standing on the hull of the ship. Golly, I'd sure like to do that!

By Freya Lorelei on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 11:08 pm:

I'm not the first person to notice this, but Amanda Rogers was one of the Mary Sue-est Mary Sues I've ever seen. You can find out more information on the infamous Ms. Sue in this lovely essay I found: Too Good To Be True: 150 Years of Mary Sue (including specific--and prominent--reference to Amanda Rogers).

Let's look at the evidence. She's a cute little female character who suddenly discovers she's omnipotent, and at first is so modest that she refrains from using her gifts, then reluctantly shoulders the burden given her. In the meantime, the entire crew makes a huge fuss over her and spends all their time worried about her fate. She uses her powers for whimsical little party tricks (manifesting puppies? Please) and makes Riker fall for her. She also holds a slew of degrees in various fields and is unusually accomplished for her age, endearing her to no less influential a person than the ship's doctor. Oh, and did I mention she uses her powers to save the ship at the end? Wesley Crusher may have competition in the "annoyingly perfect" category.

By KAM on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 5:18 am:

Bad link, Freya. This should work though.

By Brian Fitzgerald on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 9:03 pm:

You know that this ep was a spec script and origionaly the young Q was a young man becuase the writer wanted to play him.

By KAM on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 4:48 am:

Well, that would have made the love scenes with Riker different. ;-)

You know reading Freya's description of Amanda made me think of Stephen Ratliff's writing. (The horror! The horror!)

By Delta88 on Tuesday, April 22, 2003 - 3:51 pm:

Olivia D'Abo played Karen, the eldest child and only daughter on "The Wonder Years". I thought she looked familiar.

LN: Riker pushes a button on Amanda’s quarters after escorting her there in the beginning of the episode. Isn’t this a bit redundant? Don’t the doors open automatically?

The doors open automatically to public places. I suspect that crew accomdations, being private, have an extra level of protection. Otherwise, someone stopping unexpectedly in front of a crew member's door could lead to embarassing results.

One thing that bothers me is, why is Q in human form, using human words, to teach Amanda to be Q? I thought that the Q were so far above us that explaining Q things in mortal terms would be impossible. Wouldn't they revert to their "natural states" for this kind of lesson?

Why couldn't Q or Amanda produce the data that Crusher needed? I got the impression that Q sped the experiment up somehow; why couldn't he have taught her to simply arrive at the desired results with the desired data on hand? They are omnipotent, after all.

It's been a while since I've seen the episode, but as I recall, Q tried to take Amanda to the Q Continuum with him, but she resisted him (flinging him against the wall in the process), so he decided to stay aboard the Enterprise. However, he still kept telling Amanda things like, "It would be so much easier for me to explain things if you came with me to the continuum."

Or so the Q would have us think!

By I have no username on Friday, December 26, 2003 - 3:04 am:

Maybe Psuedo-omnipotent.

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 8:15 pm:

Hoo boy. Here's one. When B. Crusher tells Amanda to test the Tricorders, Crusher informs her that Nurse Ogawa will help her take the Tricorders down to the Shuttlebay. A few minutes later, we see Amanda with two carrying cases (with the Tricorders, I presume) ALONE....no sight of Nurse Ogawa at all!

Also, there's either something wrong with the lighting in Ten Forward or with Marina Sirtis (Troi) She looks VERY ILL in Ten Forward. I noticed this in "Imaginary Friend" as well.

Maybe they're just used to it. :-)

>>I don't see why he couldn't be in two places at once. He is, after all, quasi-omnipotent.

That was my thought too. I'm sure he has dozens (or maybe thousands) of other "projects" going on all the time anyway.

By Marka on Tuesday, February 08, 2005 - 7:56 am:

During his first investigation of Amanda, Q asks her if she has ever deliberately used her super powers before and she says that the first time was with Riker in the cargo bay. Wrong answer!
The first time we see her do this is when she's left alone in her quarters. Bringing all of these puppies on board might have been accidental, granted, but then she sends them back absolutely deliberately!

By Mike Ram on Thursday, June 16, 2005 - 4:14 pm:

BEfore giving Picard the first report on Amanda's parents, Data announces the hail from Tagra. Isn't this the job of the guy at tactical?

By dotter31 on Saturday, April 22, 2006 - 10:42 am:

Olivia D'Abo now plays the recurring character of Nicole Wallace, Detective Goren's nemesis on Law & Order CI.

As an aside, Whoopi Goldberg is rumored to be playing a similar character to be Mike Logan's nemesis.

By Q2 on Monday, July 17, 2006 - 3:39 pm:

It seems hard to believe that Q can't just take Amanda with him when he first tries to. He is presumably at the height of his powers, while she is just discovering hers. Yet she slams him into a wall and he gives up the idea and decides to play it nicey-nice, just like the humans want him to.

Of course if he had taken her, we'd be instantly deprived of all of the regular cast, definitely forbidden for a TV series. Also, I've always liked that the creators never show us the Q in their "natural state" - they leave it up to the viewer to try and imagine what that might be like.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Sunday, October 07, 2007 - 2:58 am:

NOTE: Jonathan Frakes loved working with Olivia D'Abo. He said, "She was the only Q that I liked." (He said that Olivia was very pretty)

When B. Crusher was a dog in this episode, you'd think the universal translator would alter her words so that it wouldn't be ruff ruff bark bark ruff.

John Lang said:

"OTE: Jonathan Frakes loved working with Olivia D'Abo. He said, "She was the only Q that I liked." (He said that Olivia was very pretty)"

I totally concur, John, of course Frakes would enjoy working with a lovely and attractive woman like Olivia. Just like Robert Beltran enjoyed working with the very attractive Virginia Madsen for VGR's "Unforgettable".

Also, Olivia d'Abo is actually British, but you wouldn't know it if you've seen her on American television, as she has used an American accent for the vast majority of her roles, including this episode of Trek. But she was British in the movies "Greedy" and "The Big Green".

I have following Olivia's career for quite some time, I first saw her on "The Wonder Years" about 20 years ago. She has done many movies and guest appearances on many TV shows, and she was also apparently a regular on the '90's NBC sitcom "The Single Guy". But I missed it, drat!

So, basically, just like Hugh Laurie, she is an actress who comes to America from the UK and decides to stifle her accent in order to play Americans on our movies and TV shows, and that's just fine with me. The last show I saw her on was in a recurring role on one of the Law And Order" shows.

Regarding her role as Amanda, I wondered why Q did not just take away her powers, so she would be human. Why was this not an option? Isn't this what she wanted? She saved that planet by cleaning up their atmosphere, and Q felt she should go to the Continuum just because of that? What's the deal here?

Anyway, Amanda was also my favorite Q, but why was her hair up all the time? It could have been down and flowing! Oh well.
