Data meets a woman who claims to have been married to Dr. Soong.

Dr. Juliana Soong Tainer........Fionnula Flanagan
Dr. Pran Tainer........William Lithgow
By Dan R. on Wednesday, June 23, 1999 - 4:36 pm:

Well...don't know if anyone mentioned this before the board was deleted so I will bring up some nits again:
1) Data goes to the holodeck with that holographic interface chip to talk to his father....his father informs him that the woman (dang...just SAW this episode and I allready forgot his mothers name!) left Soong sometime after he built her....how could that chip have contained the info that she left soongh? He must have put that chip in when he turned her on...I mean was she leaving and he said "Hold it!!!! I gotta do something!!!!" and opened her head and put that info on the chip?
2) When Data is talking with Troi, Crusher, and Picard about the difficult decision to tell his mother or not did Data happen to mention that IF she found out she was an android she'd shutdown like Soong said? I mean wouldn't telling her that be like killing her? Soong said NOT to tell her and that if she DID find out she was programmed to shut down...now I may be misinterpeting that...maybe he meant she would turn off for a bit and maybe he didn't mean die...

Those were both in the NextGen 2 Guide.

By Dan R. on Wednesday, June 23, 1999 - 9:32 pm:

ah well...I didn't know.
I only got the first one as I bid on it at ebay and I couldn't find any others anywhere....so oops! Sorry! :-)

By Freya Lorelei on Wednesday, April 24, 2002 - 11:41 pm:

I just considered a fairly massive nitpick within the entire context of Data’s construction. Dr. Soong built his “child” to be an exact physical duplicate of himself, with assistance from his wife. Didn’t they consider the repercussions of this act? If Data looks exactly like his “mother’s” husband, wouldn’t it be natural to assume that she might become attracted to her “child”, especially since he’s a permanently youthful version of the man she fell in love with? Yes, he’s not completely human looking, but in terms of his physical shape and voice (and presumably other, ahem, attributes), they’re identical twins. Juliana does react somewhat flirtatiously to Data...constantly making efforts to touch him, batting her eyelashes at him, and so on. And her attempted kiss on the cheek at the end had decidely romantic undertones. Data doesn’t seem to notice, but then it might not bother him, and he probably wishes to avoid embarrassing his mother by mentioning it. Nobody else notices either, because the pair are more often alone than around others where they might be observed (and she does make many efforts for them to be alone together...hmm...).

She also admits that she would not have abandoned Data to fend for himself if he were her biological child, but then claims there is no difference between an android offspring and an organic one. Well...obviously to her there is, because she admitted as much herself! Then again, she is programmed with emotion, so she may be just being defensive and illogical.

I don’t get the references to Data’s “childhood”. Data as a child? Physically, or is this in the metaphorical sense, when he was newly created but technically a fully functional adult? If the former, does that mean that Data was built with a program to stimulate physical growth and development, from infancy onward? That sounds very complex! If the latter, well--how do I put this delicately--I can understand the local populace’s concern with his behaviour prior to being fitted with a modesty subprogram. That is a highly disturbing...mental image. *wince*

By Doug B. on Saturday, April 27, 2002 - 12:15 am:

It wasn't really metaphorical-he still had the mind of a child so he was in his childhood at the time.

And yes, that particular mental image is quite disturbing.

Another point I just realized after reading the Nitpicker’s Guide again. The name of Data’s mother is Dr. Juliana Tainer. Let’s run that by again. Her last name is Tainer. Her husband’s name was Soong. Didn’t she take on her husband’s name after they were married? Or did she decide to be all modern, and kept her maiden name? We know they didn’t divorce, and she never married again. She’s shocked to learn of his death. Why would she carry the name of Tainer?

By Duke of Earl Grey on Monday, June 03, 2002 - 3:51 am:

She did remarry, if I'm not very much mistaken. Tainer is the last name of her new husband, who also happens to be her scientific partner, the one we don't see much of during the episode. The Soong hologram said her maiden name was O'Donnel (or O'Donald maybe, if my hearing's going.)

Two people escape from Omicron Theta and neither of them bothered warning anyone else about the crystalline entity?

Julianna & Noonian travel to a nearby planet to get married. Oddly enough the crystalline entity never attacks or threatens this place.

While Julianna is telling Geordi of Data running around without clothes, Geordi sits on the console. I hope those flashing lights under his butt aren't warning him that he's accidentally set self-destruct.

Early in the show Julianna tells Data that she wanted him to be a girl, but then Noonian brought in his head and asked her if she wanted Data to be a girl. Later, when Julianna finds out about Lal, she admits that after Lore she didn't want Noonian to build Data. She didn't want Data built, but she wanted him to be a girl?
Also since Lore and Data have identical looking heads, why was Julianna surprised when Noonian brought it in? Could it be that downloading Julianna's memory print had a few flaws? Was it really Lore that she wanted to be a girl? That would certainly explain his anti-social behavior. ("Mom didn't really love me. She wished I was a girl. Sometimes she made me wear wigs and a dress.")

Dialogue in this episode implies that a lot of time had passed since Lore was deactivated and Data was functioning as he is now. So when did Lore contact the crystalline entity?

Julianna reveals there were three prototypes before Lore. Could one of these have been the Josh who drew the pictures of the crystalline entity?

Here are two possible solutions to how the Noonian Soong hologram could know stuff after Julianna left the real Soong.
1. Soong could have broadcast information to the hologram program in Julianna's brain. So years later he could have realized why she left and sent that information through subspace to her brain. Of course, if he could do that, then why not just send false memories of himself saying he loved her so she would come back?
2. The information module can pull information from Julianna's mind and incorporate it into it's explanations. But if it could do that then couldn't it put information in Julianna' s mind?

Fionulla Flannagan (Juliana O'Donnell Soong Tainer) appears in the current chick flick "Divine Secrets Of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood," along with Next Gen vet Ashley Judd.

OK...Data's mom is an android...Why didn't Geordi see some kind of glow around her like he saw around Data in "Heart of Glory"?

By Electric Sven on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 8:11 am:

I think it's because Soong made Juliana to such perfection that he would hide any nuance of this creation that would reveal her true identity. ("It's a pity she won't live. But then again, who does?" :))

Either that, or Geordi was being polite.

Either that, or maybe Geordi's VISOR read the script!

By John A. Lang on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 8:11 pm:

Of course Data missed the biggest clue that Juliana was an android. He never saw her coming out of the ladies' room! Nor did he ask any woman on the ship if Juliana ever used the facilities.

By Electron on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 8:43 pm:

I'm pretty sure Dr.Soong had her equipped with "somekinda" digestive system. Remember, a normal human has to eat and drink and that stuff has to boldly go somewhere...

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 10:02 pm:

I must note that Juliana mentions that Soong made other androids before Lore & Data. THIS idea is carried over into "Nemesis" (B-4)

>Of course Data missed the biggest clue that Juliana was an android. He never saw her coming out of the ladies' room! Nor did he ask any woman on the ship if Juliana ever used the facilities<

Of course, NOBODY on the Enterprise uses the facilities, so maybe they're all androids! :O

By ScottN on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 12:48 pm:

Except for the Bolians, but the less said about them, the better :O

By Brian Fitzgerald on Thursday, March 20, 2003 - 9:56 am:

Since she does eat and drink (remember that she does have real skin and blood over her android insides) so anything she drinks does have to be disposed of in some way

>>Of course, NOBODY on the Enterprise uses the facilities, so maybe they're all androids!

I think I saw someone come out of a door near the bridge's door to the observation lounge. If you're standing at Science I on the bride, the lounge door is to your left and a few few forward. But, if you were to look straight left, there's an alcove that, IIRC, someone was walking from in Chain of Command.

(It's late and I'm tired, so I could be wrong.)

By John A. Lang on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 4:22 am:

In the Holographic message, Dr. Soong asks Data NOT to tell Julianna that she is an android. He also asks Data to "respect my wishes". Yet, minutes later, in the Observation Lounge, Data asks Picard, Troi & Crusher whether or not he should tell Julianna that she is an android.

What happened to "Respect my wishes"?

Of course the whole attempt to tell Julianna that she is an android would result in Julianna shutting down.

I guess Data forgot that part as well!

When Dr. Juliana Tainer and Data are beamt down to the Planet, Dr. Juliana Tainer wears Shoes with Heels. But when they arrive at the Planet in the Cave, her Shoes dont have Heels.

The Beam-COmputer must have realized, the those Shoes are very uncomfortable, when running around on rocks and Sans, and have changed them.

Well thats because hes the Computer and the others are just Humans ??!!

Whoopsie. Scurries off to correct it.

Dr. Julianna Tainer goes to Data "You've lost all your early memories." Maybe that can be blamed on his 500-plus year old head.
