Book Description

"The challenge of putting together a television show for the first time was especially intimidating because of the traditions and the expectations for Star Trek®."

-- Michael Piller, co-creator, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

It might be hard to believe, but there was a time when launching a new Star Trek series was considered a risky venture. Maybe it was just luck that Star Trek: The Next Generation® had succeeded. Could another show capture the imagination of the viewers?

The creators of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine® built a cast of characters totally different from the more comfortable, familiar ones that had been seen on previous incarnations of Star Trek. One of the writers observed, "You can see right away they're not perfectly engineered humans....They seem more real....They represent a different way to tell a story." The setting for the show was a space station, a dark, almost sinister, alien place -- the diametrical opposite of a bright reassuring starship.
This new Star Trek series set every expectation on its head -- and it succeeded. Deep Space Nine created some of the most visionary, emotionally charged and critically acclaimed hours of television ever made, and at the end of seven years it could boast of ranking at the top of the syndicated ratings year after year.

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion is the official guide to all 176 spectacular episodes of this revolutionary series. Detailed synopses, behind-the-scenes information, and in-depth interviews with the cast and crew are provided for each show. Hundreds of photographs and illustrations -- many never before seen -- fill the pages of this book. For the casual reader or the fan who wants to know more, this is the definitive book on this groundbreaking series. From its explosive beginning to the heartrending conclusion, relive it all and see why TV Guide called it "the best acted, written, produced, and altogether finest...Star Trek series."

The following is from Starlog # 278 (Sept. 2000) Page 8: "Docking at bookstores this month is Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion (Pocket Books, $27.95) by Terry J. Erdmann with Paula M. Block. Like past series companions, this trade paperback offers episodes guides, lotsa production info, and scads of secret stuff. However, unlike the writers of similar tomes, Erdmann spent literally months on the show's sets during each of its final four seasons, shadowing its key creators and logging multiple interviews with them as well as the entire cast. The result is one of the most authoritative companions to any TV program. And it's all original research - no regurgitated quotes from other writers' interviews published in Starlog and elsewhere. This is a must for any DS9 fan. Highly recommended."

My copy got here yesterday. I'm rather impressed with it. I was hoping for more behind the scenes stuff than I've read so far. But I good companion for the series. Also the major shocker was the book admitting when episodes sucked. I'm surprised Paramount and PocketBooks let them do that. Good to know the writers and others don't think every episode is a winner.

Newt, I agree that the honesty is refreshing. I just wish the official X-Files books would do the same. Since the XF "powers-that-be" must think every episode is a masterpiece, that is why I don't purchase the books.

I bought a copy and have read the first 3 seasons. I LOVE this book. I recommend it to all DS9 fans.

Another DS9 guide is coming out next month. Cinefantastique magazine Vol. 32 No. 4 (November 2000) will contain an episode guide of the final season. If anyone is unfamilar with this magazine, they have done yearly episode guides of all the modern Trek shows. In the past, they would do Voyager and DS9 in the same issue. This year, they did Voyager way back in Vol. 31 No. 11 (April 2000). So, at that time, I just assumed that they weren't going to do a final season episode guide for DS9. I am glad to be wrong. Look for it. It should be good.

I'm watching the baseball game (go braves!) so I don't exactly have time to scroll through all the messages, so I don't know if this has been mentioned, but...

A while ago, I purchased the DS9 Companion. The one for the computer. It contains...

-Trailer for each episode
-Summary of each episode
-Working FULL-TEXT script of each episode
-All seven seasons
-You can read each episode as it is
-All are fully searchable

etc.

I use it every day. I love it.
