Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: *** Old Sinks ***: Defiant consoles and crew asisgnments

I never understood why Kira was first officer of the Defiant (since it's a Fleet ship). Also, why does Odo pop up on the Defiant? Shouldn't he be guarding the Station?

What happened to my first post? Ah well, here it is, in brief form:

Why is Dax (science officer) helm and ops?

Why are helm and ops the same console?

How come when it's not Dax there it's a goldshirt?

What are Bashir, Ezri and Worf's consoles for?

Are all engineers noncoms because O'Brien is?

Gotta get all the regulars on the show!

What are Bashir, Ezri and Worf's consoles for?

Bashir's is the medical database, Ezri's is science (I guess) And Worf's is tactical (Though he does fire weapons sometimes, so maybe it's weapons too?).

Actually, during the last few episodes, the assignments made absolutely no sense. Bashir was at Tactical I, Ezri was at Tactical II, and Worf was at Science (?). The Star Trek: Captain's Chair CD-ROM details these stations. And it wasn't changed for the Defiant 2, because you could still see the labels at the top of the consoles. I suppose they could have been reprogrammed, but why not make it easier and switch Worf with Ezri and put someone more experienced in Bashir's position?

I read Dax was the conn officer because of her piloting skills. Helm and ops were merged because they wanted to echo the arrangement of the original U.S.S. Enterprise.

This topic will eternally be confusing because the Defiant never had a regular crew.

Except for Worf, whose main duty there was singing Klingon opera, spilling gagh on the captain's chair, and running around the ship nude trying to kill an imaginary kohlar beast after drinking a bit too much bloodwine.

I must have missed an episode.

I believe Data's console on the Enterprise-D was also both Ops and Helm although helm may have been the one next to Data. I can't remember and I don't want to go through the tapes right now.
I believe that DS9 is the only Star Trek show with a chief engineer who isn't a comissioned(sp?) officer. Scotty was a Lt Commander, Geordi was a lieutenant then a Lt Comm, and Torres, although not truly part of Starfleet since she was kicked out, is considered a lieutenant.

Data's console was ops and Geordi/Wesley/Ro/guest navigator's console was the helm.

Data's title was Operations Manager, so he sat at ops, the other chair was the con(sp?) short for control i guess.

By ScottN on Thursday, December 28, 2000 - 11:13 pm:

Jayson, the term is "Conn". It's a naval term, and generally refers to the helm.
