Doesn't He Look Familiar To You?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: *** Old Sinks ***: Doesn't He Look Familiar To You?
By guardian on Tuesday, April 25, 2000 - 6:59 pm:

I've been watching quite a few hours of Star Trek lately, and seen that there are enough actors returing in different roles to warrant a board on the subject. I'll start everone out with 3.

Marc Alaimo: The Antican ambassador, Tebok, Gul Macet, a gambeler, and finally, Gul Dukhat.

Brock Peters: Admril Cartwright and Joseph Sisko.

Jeffery Combs: Quark's alien buddy-from meridian, Weyoun, and the Tustkane cordinator

By ScottN on Tuesday, April 25, 2000 - 7:37 pm:

J.G. Hertzler: Vulcan Captain of the Saratoga, Martok.

Wasn't Marc Alaimo also one of the Romulans from "The Neutral Zone"?

By Aaron Dotter on Wednesday, April 26, 2000 - 10:29 am:

Hertzler was also in Tsunkatse as the Hirogen.

By Brian Lombard on Wednesday, April 26, 2000 - 12:40 pm:

Hertzler was also the Changeling Odo befriended in the 7th season. I think his name was Lars, or something like that.

Robert O'Reilly (Gowron) also played a hologram in the DS9 episode where Vic's was taken over by gangsters.

Kasidy played the alien wife of Worf's human brother a TNG episode.

By guardian on Wednesday, April 26, 2000 - 4:31 pm:

Tebok was the romulan commander from "neutral zone"

By Tom Kun on Wednesday, April 26, 2000 - 8:56 pm:

There's also James Cromwell, who played Cochrane in STFC, the Angosian Prime Minister in TNG's "The Hunted," and the Karemma representative in DS9's "Starship Down."

And Steven Weber, Colonel Day f/ DS9's "The Siege," played Brian on the NBC show Wings.

And Tom Paris was the cadet that ended up getting expelled at the end of "The First Duty."
But you knew that already.

I also saw Chief O'Brien in the Steven Seagal flick Under Siege.

I obviously pay too much attention to these things. Either that or I spent too much time reading that Star Trek Encyclopedia. Or both.

By Lea Frost on Thursday, April 27, 2000 - 1:23 am:

And of course Jeffrey Combs also played Brunt, making him the only actor to play two recurring Trek roles simultaneously -- and, in "The Dogs of War," in the same episode. (Extensive discussion of the filmographies of both Combs and Rene Auberjonois can be found over at the DS9 MSTing board. ;-) )

Armin Shimerman (Quark) and Max Grodenchik (Rom) both played several different Ferengi on TNG. Shimerman also played a Betazoid gift box. :-)

Aron Eisenberg (Nog) played a young Kazon in VOY's "Initiations."

Tim Russ played several different guest roles, including a Klingon in "Invasive Procedures" (DS9), a Starfleet officer on the Ent-B in "Generations," and a terrorist in "Starship Mine" (TNG). He also auditioned for the part of Geordi -- which opens up the related "who auditioned for what" tangent, since quite a few Trek actors were initially rejected as regulars...

Andrew Robinson (Garak) auditioned for Odo.

Jeffrey Combs auditioned for Riker (!).

Max Grodenchik was the runner-up for Quark. (If he had been cast, Shimerman would have been Rom.)

Denise Crosby auditioned for Counselor Troi, and Marina Sirtis auditioned for the security chief, whose original name I forget. The directors had them switch roles because they thought the types were wrong...

By Tom Kun on Thursday, April 27, 2000 - 10:22 am:

And to add to this thread (even though I'm supposed to be writing an essay right now) ...

Eric Menyuk (The Traveler) auditioned for Data.

Stephen Macht (General Krim in the Circle Trilogy) auditioned for Picard.

And, this is quite interesting, DeForest Kelley auditioned for Spock.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Thursday, April 27, 2000 - 10:39 am:

I saw an episode of "Lois & Clark" where Robert Bertran (Chakotay) plays a terrorist.

By Tom Kun on Thursday, April 27, 2000 - 10:56 am:

Speaking of Robert Beltran, ever see Eating Raoul? Well, he was Raoul. Great movie.

By Slinky Frog on Thursday, April 27, 2000 - 5:47 pm:

I just recently saw a "Murder She Wrote" episode, with Beltan in it. He played a mean wealthy Loanshark. Sorry to report, but he become the victim in this episode.

By Mike Ram on Thursday, April 27, 2000 - 8:18 pm:

I saw the guy who played Admiral Leyton in "Homefront" on an episode of SeaQuest DSV.

Also I always wanted to see Robert Urich in an episode of DS9 to have a nice "Spencer For Hire" reunion but unfortunately that didn't happen.

By Chris Thomas on Friday, April 28, 2000 - 2:36 am:

Diane (Diana?) Muldaur (Pulaski in TNG Season 2) was also in an ep of Classic Trek as a blind woman. Can't remember which ep offhand.

Michael Dorn played Colonel Worf (I think) in Star Trek VI.

By ScottN on Friday, April 28, 2000 - 9:06 am:

Diana Muldaur was in 2 classic eps. "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" and "Return To Tomorrow". In one she played Dr. Miranda Jones, the blind telepath, and the other she was a science specialist (that was the one with Sargon).

Diana Muldaur also played a lawyer on LA Law who met her untimely death by falling down an open elevator shaft.

By Chris Thomas on Friday, April 28, 2000 - 9:39 am:

Didn't Max Grodenchik also have a role in Star Trek Insurrection?

And Ethan Philips (Neelix) was in the holodeck sequence in Star Trek First Contact.

By Mark Swinton on Friday, April 28, 2000 - 5:16 pm:

SubCommander N'Vek (TNG, "Face of the Enemy")
Tosk (DS9, "Captive Pursuit")
Jem'Haddddddar (forgotten the name, but the episode was "Hippocratic Oath")
Kazon on crippled ship (Voyager, "State of Flux")
etc.
(Scott MacDonald is up there with Marc Alaimo as an actor who has donned more weird alien disguises than most others...)

By Electron on Friday, April 28, 2000 - 5:54 pm:

Denise Crosby was also in "Superman: L&C", together with the infamous "neon tube device" which appeared also in TNG (at least three times), ST5, Alien Nation, Airplane 2, JAG and Austin Powers 2. Where does this thing come from???

By guardian on Friday, April 28, 2000 - 7:34 pm:

also, odo (i say odo because i simply cannot spell the actor's name), also played Connel Wes from Star Trek 6. He is also in the upcoming ABC production of "Pinochio" with Brent Spiner- ironic isn't it?

By Tom Kun on Saturday, April 29, 2000 - 9:00 am:

No one's mentioned Phil Morris. He was in STIII, the lieutentant who asks Kirk "Are they planning a ceremony when we get in?" He was also a Klingon in "House of Quark," a Jem'Hadar, the astronaut in "One Small Step," and had a recurring role on Seinfeld as the fast-talking lawyer Jackie Chiles.

And speaking of Seinfeld, that guy who played Admiral Paris was Mr. Wilhelm, George Costanza's boss at Yankee Stadium. Melanie Smith (Tora Ziyal), Michelle Forbes (Ro Laren), Sarah Silverman (Rain Robinson f/ "Future's End"), and Matt McCoy (Mr. Ral f/ "The Price") have also all been on Seinfeld.

By ScottN on Saturday, April 29, 2000 - 2:47 pm:

Ensign Ro resigned from Starfleet and the Maquis, got a nose job and time travelled back to 20th Century Baltimore to become the Coroner (Homicide: Life on the Street).

By Aaron Dotter on Saturday, April 29, 2000 - 8:32 pm:

Was that Andrew Robinson on Profiler tonight? He was on JAG a little while ago too.

By Chris Thomas on Saturday, April 29, 2000 - 9:54 pm:

The guy who played Mr Pitt was also in an episode of Voyager as alien - and don't forget Jason Alexander played an alien too in the Voyager episode Think Tank.

Was Phil Morris also in The Love Boat: The New Wave and the resurrected Mission: Impossible made in Australia in the late 80s?

Denise Crosby was also in the film Deep Impact as the mother of the kid who discovered the meteor.

Michelle Forbes was the mother of the kid in Galaxy Quest who was helping the crew with all his technical information on the ship.

Obvious, but worth mentioning: Majel Barrett was the first officer in The Cage, Nurse Christine Chapel in Classic Trek, Lwaxana Troi in NextGen and the computer voice across all the series.

By Foster on Sunday, April 30, 2000 - 12:06 am:

Maybe I'm easily impressed but I was surprised to read that Phil Morris who portrayed the reserved and heroic Remata'Klan from 'Rocks and Shoals' (one my fav. eps.) also played the conniving Jackie Charles from Seinfeld. Incredible, I guess that's why they call it acting.

By Mark Stanley on Sunday, April 30, 2000 - 1:04 am:

Aaron: Yes, that was Andrew Robinson on Profiler tonight. :0)

By Nawdle on Tuesday, May 02, 2000 - 10:02 pm:

Nana Visitor was in Empty Nest (2 different times. Despite what the IMDb says!),Knight Rider (If I remember right she had her hair bleached blond.),The Colbys,Hotel,Remington Steele,Hunter,MacGyver,Alfred Hitchcock Presents,Night Court and several others I don't feel like listing right now.

By Chris Thomas on Tuesday, May 02, 2000 - 11:41 pm:

I was watching Seinfeld the other night and saw George's boss at Yankee Stadium, Mr Morgan, and then it hit me - Tuvix!

By Bullet on Sunday, June 18, 2000 - 4:00 pm:

I noticed on Martial Law that they have had a number of Trek actors so far

Armin Shimerman
Michael Dorn
Andrew J. Robinson

By Locutus Ofborg on Saturday, June 24, 2000 - 6:38 pm:

I heard Max Grodenchik played a trill ensign in the library scene in StarTrek: Insurrection but the scene was cut (although his name still appears on the credits). I also heard Martha Hackett (Seska) also had a bit part in insurrection aswell. talking of Martha Hacket she has been a Romulan (DS9: The Search), a strange pink alien cut from the final version of All good Things and of course Seska (ST: Voy).
Oh and thanks Tom Kun (april 26): I watched "The Seige" the other day and I couldn't figure out where I had seen Col. Day before...he played Jeffrey in the film "Jeffrey" with Patrick stewart.
Ok, this proves I have too much time on my hands.

By Sven of Nine on Saturday, April 14, 2001 - 1:32 am:

Max was indeed in Insurrection. Why, TPBP? Why didn't you let us see that?!

Speaking of auditions, apparently Susan Gibney (who I think was Leah Brahms in TNG) was considered for the role of Captain Janeway in the early days of Voyager. Then they chose Genevive Bujold instead, and the rest is Trek lore...

Apparently Robert Picardo wanted the part of Neelix in Voyager and was initially disappointed that he got the Doctor's role instead...

Oh - don't forget that a pre-Gowron Robert O'Reilly appeared as a holographic gangster who nearly kills Picard/Dixon Hill in the TNG episode "Manhunt".

Speaking of Klingons, Charles "K'mpec" Cooper was also General Koord, another elderly and well-respected Klingon (typecasting?), in ST5.

Speaking of Dixon Hill, David Selburg has also been in a few eps - he was the (now forgotten) Whalen in "The Big Goodbye", and also played Riker's alien torturer in "Frame of Mind".

The Jem'Haddddddddddddddddddddddar (:)) Scott Macdonald played in "Hippocratic Oath" was Goran'Agar. And he played the human Rollins on Voyager (the bridge redshirt with the huge chin in Caretaker). That famous lantern-jaw has been everywhere...

Yes, the "neon tube thingy" - it's pretty popular!

By Ratbat on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 11:41 pm:

Nope, Jeffery Coombs ain't the first guy to play recurring (and yes, definitely recurring, I know the difference between that and 'regular') characters simultaneous.

Way back in the first season of NextGen, Brent Spiner started playing Lore as well as Data. Then a couple of years later, he'd make his first appearance as Dr Soong, both of whom we'd see more of in coming years.

By Sven of Nine on Friday, April 27, 2001 - 2:39 pm:

To add further interest, apparently the DS9 companion revealed that Phil Morris (who has been EVERYWHERE - just see above) auditioned for the role of Commander Sisko too!

Don't get O'Brien to fly a passenger aircraft - that old Meaney played the captain of a jet aeroplane in Die Hard 2 and met his fiery end in a redshirt kind of way. But if The Committments is anything to go by, O'Brien should have made a fortune at Quark's with his Elvis Presley impersonation...

And don't give any ancient puzzle boxes to Andy Robinson either - it'll literally raise hell in a Clive Barker sort of way.

By Sven of Nine on Sunday, April 29, 2001 - 1:45 am:

I'm not surprised that no-one has mentioned Hilary Shephard (Hoya the Benzite from "The Ship") who later played Lauren (one of the genetically engineered humans - the sex-mad one) in "Statistical Probabilities" and "Chrysalis" (she was credited as Hilary Shephard-Taylor). I wouldn't have seen the resemblance either (gotta hand it to those make-up artists!).

Question: is Ron Taylor (the singing Klingon chef from "Melora" and "Playing God") the same Ron Taylor who voiced the late "Bleeding Gums" Murphy on "Th* S*mps*ns"?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Sunday, April 29, 2001 - 11:14 am:

Of course, Hilary Shephard was also Divatox in Power Rangers Turbo. God help me, I remember that.

By Tricorder on Monday, April 30, 2001 - 1:39 am:

Sven of Nine, Phil Morris was also one of the children from the original series episode "Miri."

By Sven of Nine on Tuesday, May 01, 2001 - 11:14 am:

Oh... yeah... that too...

(A changeling. It's the only explanation...)

By John D on Friday, December 16, 2005 - 1:20 pm:

Jeffery Combs also played Shran on Enterprise.

By a1215402054617 on Monday, July 07, 2008 - 5:47 am:
