With dwindling ratings, more competition, and a divided and desultory fan base, what will be the fate of the first two Rick Berman spin-offs?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: *** Old Sinks ***: With dwindling ratings, more competition, and a divided and desultory fan base, what will be the fate of the first two Rick Berman spin-offs?

This is a poll on http://www.trekweb.com/ . Here are the choices:

Both may be forgotten by the
media, but fans will always
remember

Voyager will be forgotten, but not
DS9

DS9 will be forgotten, but not
Voyager

If the next series is a major hit,
media and fans alike will probably
forget DS9 and Voyager

The success of a new series
wouldn't affect DS9 and Voyager's
fade into television history oblivion

The success of a new series
wouldn't affect the strong
remembrance of DS9 and Voyager

The success of a new series would
increase the popularity of DS9 and
Voyager in a nostalgic way

None of these are their true fate!

I cast my vote for "Voyager will be forgotten, but not DS9".

You can't forget Voyager. Voyager's like the lowlife cousin who's not doing to well but who ya still love anyway because he's got some good qualities and he's family. :^)

They will both be remembered because they were two long running series in a large franchise, no matter how well the next series does

I think if the next series is a hit, it will only add to their popularity. They're very different, but I don't think either one is particularly more memorable than the other. ('Course, it would HELP us remember if a network were actually SHOWING reruns of DS9 . . .) (or are they and I just don't know about it?)

Where I live (Oregon), CBS is showing reruns of DS9 at 5:00pm Saturdays. About a month ago, I watched the one where Dukat finds Ziyal, but I don't know if they're airing the eps in order or not.

If Series V is a success, I'll still remember DS9. I'd be a fan of DS9 even if it wasn't Star Trek. I can't say the same about TNG or Voyager.

I don't think you realize just how loyal many DS9 Fans are to their show. The only ones who even compare in terms of loyalty are TOS Fans.

Oops, didn't quite read that whole thing Mike.
Looks like you're with me on this! :-)

TNG? What's that? Have I forgotten it already?

DS9 will always be remembered for being simply unique, compared to the other series. Voyager tries to marry the DS9 style with the return to form of (all together now, everyone) "seeking out strange new etc." but something isn't quite right. TNG (yes I still remember it) relied too much on TOS, especially when RodNBerry still had an active role, then afterwards the drama tended to be a little forced (Season 5, anyone?) although the ship shots vastly improved. Still, it has some good memories (discussed ad nauseum elsewhere)

Will we be able to distill as good a selection of memories of Voyager as we will of TNG and DS9, once the old horse and cash cow have been respectively flogged to death and milked dry??

(sorry, I meant to say "once the Voyager series has finished its run of 7 seasons and inevitable movie appearances, and the new series makes its debut" - no offence intended)

Hey, Roland Khorshidianzadeh, I liked the original & DS9, but TNG still has a VERY loyal fanbase, too(I myself am part of it).
In the end, though, I think that DS9 will be remembered with more fondness than Voyager.

By Don Shootthemessenger on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 - 12:16 pm:

The way I see it, TNG and VOY were very much "what's next?" series', with the obvious ploy of a starship as a vehicle for adventure. Despite the Defiant and the (hmpfff!) runabouts, DS9 hasn't had the chance to develop this "unknown" quantity into the show, but in doing so, and focusing on the main stories, it has grown to become possibly the most endearing of the shows, rather than diluting the show with colder material which could easily be dismissed.

Also, a lot of people were introduced to Star Trek by TNG, so for a lot of people, they would love that show even if it weren't Star Trek.

Anyway, I say "Voyager will be forgotten, but not DS9"

The irony in all this, of course, is that (as Phil said in the relevant Nitpicker's Guide) most people nowadays tend to think of TOS as the crazy old cousin, when in fact without it there would have been no DS9, no Voyager, no TNG, no Enterprise etc.

(I also find it quite amusing to think that TOS managed to set such a huge ball rolling despite being the shortest series...)
