Have all human mental/physical diseases been cured by the 23rd/24th centuries?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: Have all human mental/physical diseases been cured by the 23rd/24th centuries?
By Anonymous on Saturday, April 17, 2004 - 6:22 pm:

Other than the common cold, which I think wasn't cured until the 23rd century, and Geordi's Blindness, has science in the 23rd and 24th centuries cured all Mental/Physical diseases?

By Dan Gunther on Saturday, April 17, 2004 - 6:32 pm:

Nope. Irumodic Syndrome, Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome, Urudelean Flu, and Bendi Syndrome are just a few of the diseases that beings in the 24th century suffer from.

Anon, why do you keep creating new boards just to asking such extraneous questions?

Dan, Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome was cured in the episode where it first appeared, "Genesis(TNG)", by using human prenatal immunological material, wasn't it?

There have been numerous other diseases that have not been cured in any number of episodes.

There's the disease Tuvok had in "Endgame(VOY)," the Teplan Blight from "The Quickening(DS9)", the disease Legate Ghemor died from in "Ties of Blood and Water(DS9)," the Vidiian Phage from "Voyager," etc.

Didn't the guy from Think Tank(VOY) say that his group had cured the Phage?

Also, Bashir developed a vaccine for the Teplen Blight, which, in the long run, should eradicate the disease. (Although, I'm not sure of the pathology of it... virus? bacterium?)

Luigi Novi: Dan, Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome was cured in the episode where it first appeared, "Genesis(TNG)", by using human prenatal immunological material, wasn't it?

Dan Gunther: Ah, right Luigi. I knew that too, darn it. :) I was just trying to come up with some names off the top of my head, and that one popped into my memory. Didn't think about it too hard! hehe

Tuvok's disease was curable, but only via mindmeld with a compatible Vulcan. THe Teplan Blight was vaccinated against by Bashir in that episode, and the Think Tank group cured the Phage. I don't watch DS9 regularly, so i dont know the other disease you're talking about.

Dan Gunther: Oh. Well the answer to that question is still no.

One thing I've wondered about is cancer treatment in the 24th Century... surely it still exists (especially given all the "radiation alerts").

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, April 19, 2004 - 3:17 pm:

I seem to recall putting a notation in my Nitpick Document (I don't have it on me, so I can't check now) about why Kurros' statement in "Think Tank" should've been taken with a grain of salt. I don't remember if it was something specific, or if it was just his generally untrustworthy nature. I'll have to search my Document when I come back from vacation.

By Thande on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 - 2:34 am:

On Voyager they often used a drug called 'arithrazine' to "inoculate" against radiation. (E.g. The Omega Directive).

Some nitpickers have considered this 'bad science', but I prefer to look upon it as inoculating against the effects of radiation, most obviously cancer.

From this point of view you could say that at least some types of cancer must have been cured by the 24th century.

Both Viruses and Bacteria have a capacity to adapt and evolve to whatever Medical Science can throw at them, and genetic mutations can always spring new genetic diseases. While in all likelyhood, Federation Medical Science has the capacity to deal with all comers.
