How exactly did he ruin Star Trek.

Why don't you state an opinion first?

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, August 23, 2004 - 7:25 pm:

He doesn't have one, Josh. He's just trying to get attention and annoy people. Just delete the board.

Dispite the obvious troll I'm going to bite and toss my opinion in here.
Rick Berman ruined Star Trek by dumbing it down and hyping it up.
He made a conscious effort to get away from the visiting strange new worlds concept. After season 1 of TNG there really wasn't a lot of away teams. If they did beam down it was a part of the story, not the start of it. So now we're just flying around in our fancy ship, but not really going anywhere.
Next he decided to retool the show more toward action. Before Trek had been more of a drama. Space opera/theater gave way to space actions. Plots didn't need to make sense or have continuity as long as they looked cool. The examination of the nature of humanity gave way to an endless stream of techno-babble. Less Shakespear, more Tom Clancy.

I'm not sure about this. Voyager did a lot of going to strange new worlds stuff; half of it was good and half stunk. DS9, after a while, did almost no episodes with "away teams" and in fact, some of its best episodes took place entirely on the station or on planets that we were familiar with (like Earth, Bajor, or Cardassia).

I also disagree that Berman tooled the show more towards action; the original series did technobabble shows, pointless action shows, and the like just as much as TNG. If anything, people parodied TNG for having LESS action than TOS and my friend's major complaint about DS9 was that it was "boring."

By ScottN on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 12:58 pm:

Honestly, when DS9 first came out, it *was* boring. It was slower paced, there was no "boldy going", they had to wait for the world to come to them.

Needless to say, it got better.

By Josh Gould (Jgould) on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 - 2:05 pm:

I *did* find it boring back during the first season, but upon rewatching them I really enjoyed them. Plus I like deliberate pacing.

Also, Duet is one of the best episodes of *any* series, let alone DS9, but takes place mostly in the Security Office with only Kira and Marritza.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 - 9:04 pm:

I thought the first couple of seasons were just fine.

Yes! Brilliant! Sic T.A.F. on Berman & Braga! That'll kill two birds with one stone!

I really don't think Star Trek was "ruined" after the first season of TNG.

By Thande on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 5:03 pm:

Star Trek got better after the first season of TNG.

By Josh Gould (Jgould) on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 - 8:29 pm:

Indeed - and even if it had been "ruined", that would've been more Roddenberry's fault than Berman's.

I think all of you need to STOP talking bad about Rick Berman. It is shameful, some of the things that are said about him. I am not a great fan of ENT either (though it wasn't bad, it just didn't feel like Star Trek), but everything else he did was perfect for Star Trek. If there's one thing that Star Trek does, then it is change, advance and grow. Otherwise the shows would die! Rick Berman did a great job and instead of making despicable and offensive statements, we all owe him thanks
