Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: What human hobbies/Interests exist in the 24th century?

Do people still go Bowling, what about Ping Pong, or Karate, or Chess, what sports still exist in the future.

By ScottN on Monday, August 30, 2004 - 12:30 pm:

Even though Kirk and Spock play it regularly, and Spock used it to exonerate Kirk in Court Martial(TOS), no... people don't play chess in the future.

And no, they weren't playing Ping Pong in Relativity(VOY), and Ambu-Jitsu is not a martial art along the lines of karate in The Icarus Factor(TNG).

A short list of activities that *obviously* exist in the 24th (and 23rd) century:

Parisee's Squares
Poker
Domjot
Darts
Dabo
Chess (3D and regular)
Kayaking
Mountain climbing
Running (the Academy Marathon!)
Fencing
Tai Chi (and the Klingon variant)
Baseball
Soccer/Football
Skiing

etc, etc, etc

Not to mention the bowling alley on the ENT-1701, in The Naked Time(TOS).

Next we're going to be asked questions like:

"What colour hair is predominant in the 24th century?"
(Answer: Blue)
"Do people still drink wine in Star Trek?"
(Answer: No, Picard's family produces wine for industrial purposes only.)

Was their Really a Bowling alley in
The Naked Time(TOS)??

By ScottN on Wednesday, September 01, 2004 - 11:17 am:

I know you can't be troubled to read books. But watch the friggin' episode and see.

Yes, there was a Bowling alley. Riley said that there would be a dance there.

Hmm, a dance in a bowling alley. Would they have had to wear bowling shoes?

There is indication that "Norbert" might suffer from a bipolar condition... which would explain a lot of what's been happening here. While I certainly don't encourage Norbert's disruptive behavior... if this condition is true for him, I don't think it would be healthy (not to mention compassionate) of us to come down on him each and every time he posts.

Hey... at least he's participating in the conversation, for once... let's encourage that!
