Does Star Trek have a Jewish Problem ?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: Does Star Trek have a Jewish Problem ?
By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 - 12:48 pm:

Not trying to offend anyone, but many Christian & Jewish Star Trek Fans have been asking in online articles
"Why are there no Jews in Star Trek?" Granted there have been many Jewish actors in the Star Trek Franchise, Shatner, Nimoy, etc, and Jewish writers behind the scenes, but why are there no Jewish Characters in the Star Trek Franchise, ? What is so Terrible about showing that Jewish Humans exist in the Future of Humanity & The
Federation/Starfleet, just like many other Human Racial & Ethnic Groups are shown to Exist in the Star Trek Future ? This is 2019, It shouldn't be so Controversial to show that Jewish Humans Exist in the Future of Humanity in the Star Trek Franchise, Many Star Trek fans think that it is anti-semitic to not include Jewish Humans in the Future along with Everyone else , Is Star Trek trying to imply that the Jewish people no longer exist in the Future, ? Or that the Future would be better off without Jews ? Many People are Talking about that online, and are indeed noticing this, does Star Trek have a Problem with Including Jews in the Future along with everyone else, ? I Know that in the Fictional Star Trek future, Most Humans don't practice any religion, it is Mostly Secular Humanism, but Jews are an Ethno-Religious group, an ethnic group as well as a Religion, Many Jewish people are Secular and don't practice their Religion, With the upcoming series Star Trek: Picard taking place at the end of the 24th Century, and Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery taking place 1,000 years into the future, in the 32nd Century, this would be a Perfect Opportunity for the Star Trek writers to show and make Explicitly Crystal Clear in On-Screen Canon TV Scenes that Jewish Humans do Exist in the Future, and make it Explicitly clear that they are Jewish, and portray it in a Non-offensive, Non-Stereotypical manner, Star Trek: Picard & Star Trek: Discovery could show Secular Jewish Humans serving in Starfleet, & The Federation in a Positive Light, for example how about
Jewish actor Paul Rudd as a Jewish Starfleet Officer , Remember IDIC , Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, While I'm a Christian myself, I find it disturbing that Jesus's own people are Not Shown in the Future of Humanity

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 - 1:14 pm:

From the Wikipedia entry for the Science Fiction show "Firefly" which takes place in the year 2517 it says "Mr. Universe
Mr. Universe is a reclusive techno-geek in the movie Serenity portrayed by David Krumholtz. He lives on a moon with his Gynoid wife, Lenore (portrayed by Nectar Rose). He has a great affinity for data and is capable of intercepting nearly any transmission or signal in the system. He boasts, "There's the truth of the signal. Everything goes somewhere, and I go everywhere."

He is seen stepping on a cloth-wrapped glass while wearing a yarmulka in a video clip of his wedding, implying that he is Jewish (or a member of a Judaism-influenced religion), and making him the second potential Jew seen within the Firefly universe; the other being Amnon the postman (the episode "The Message" clearly shows him wearing a kippah and tzitzit). In the novelization for the movie Serenity, he is alleged to have been a student at the same flight school as Wash, achieving the highest possible grades by manipulating the school's software, and providing Wash with information in exchange for Wash keeping quiet about what he did.

He is killed by the Operative, but set plans in motion for Malcolm Reynolds to broadcast a report from Dr. Caron that reveals the origins of the Reavers, leaving the message with his Gynoid bride before he dies."

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 - 11:27 am:

Another person typed online in reply to
Why Star Trek is leaving the Jewish people out of the Future of Humanity that
"
Also, it's a question similar to like "Why are there no Queer/Gay characters in Trek?" which used to be the case until DISCOVERY. The bottom line for that is that Trek was meant for broadcast to middle class America, and anything controversial - as in likely to get the episode banned or not shown on local TV - was either not included or carefully disguised. As fans we can invent backstory reasons why this might be the case, but for the most part those are rationalisations.

So are Jewish characters like that? Being Jewish is hardly controversial, but perhaps either the writers of the show never thought of it, or perhaps no one was shown to be Jewish because on the whole, noone was should to be religious at all in Trek (Uhura being the exception which slipped through) unless they were either ALIEN (like Bajorans) or repressed by that (the Arons). Aliens probably can't be Jewish

This bugs me, so I googled Jewish characters in science fiction because it may not bjust be Trek. Mixed results:

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Friday, August 02, 2019 - 2:43 pm:

Can anyone please respond, so do the
Jewish people as an Ethnic group still exist in the Fictional Future of Star Trek ?

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Friday, August 02, 2019 - 5:20 pm:

We are talking about a universe where french winemakers speak with a british accent. I don't think the ethnic groups we are familiar with have a great deal of meaning in their reality.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Saturday, August 03, 2019 - 6:48 pm:

Francois , did you or anyone else see this article,
https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/193639/why-are-there-no-jews-in-the-star-trek-universe
With all the New Star Trek TV shows coming out,
Star Trek can show once and for all, that Jewish Humans exist in the Future, just like everyone else, but people are talking about this, the debate isn't going away ? and are any people from CBS or
CBS All Access & The Star Trek Writers members of this Nitpicker Central group , or reading what we post ? Paul Rudd is going to be in
Ghostbusters 2020 coming out next year, I liked the title Ghostbusters 3 better , anyway Paul Rudd could play a Jewish Starfleet Officer in
Star Trek: Picard, or in Star Trek: Discovery, and the writers can make it explicitly Crystal Clear on Screen that the character is Jewish, and not just give him a surname that sounds Jewish, but where the character briefly mentions that he's Jewish, a Canon on-screen reference, not necessarily religious, but Ethnically Jewish
What is so terrible about having a Jewish Character in Star Trek ? They have other ethnic groups, and gay human characters on
Star Trek: Discovery

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Saturday, August 03, 2019 - 6:57 pm:

Francois, see this article,

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Saturday, August 03, 2019 - 7:26 pm:

There are litterally thousands of ethnic groups on our planet today. I, for instance, belong to the French Canadian one. There are Ukrainians, Basques, the Ainu of northen Japan, Mongols, Polynesian, Maori, Punjabis, etc, etc,. None of those groups have been explicitely represented in Star Trek, and nobody, to my knowledge, has ever suggested that Star Trek has deliberately avoided representing them. There are no explicit representations of Jewish people in Star trek for no other reason than there are no explicit representations of jewish people in Star Trek. I don't think there is any actual resistance to such a representation, I just think nobody has ever produced a script requiring it. There may be one in the future, or there may not be, either way is just fine.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Monday, August 05, 2019 - 12:18 pm:

Francois, how would Paul Rudd, being a great Jewish actor , feel about playing a Jewish Starfleet officer, in either Star Trek: Discovery or Star Trek: Picard ? Is Paul Rudd a
Star Trek fan ? When will Star Trek show that Jews exist in the Future like everyone else ? That Jewish Humans still Exist ? Countless People are talking about this, the debate intensifies

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Monday, August 05, 2019 - 6:54 pm:

Does it though? I've heard none of this so-called "debate". Seems to me that you are coming here to cause trouble amongst what is a small but passionate group of posters here.

I also note that you have generally posted on boards that are not moderated heavily (you stopped posting on the TOS boards after you realised Tim was around).

We have what is known as "roving mods" here who can moderate any board they wish and even remove offensive posts or ban posters that break the rules.

Also Phil- who created the site- pops in when needed.

Just a friendly warning...

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Monday, August 05, 2019 - 6:55 pm:

Also, starting a post with "Not trying to offend anyone, but....." means you most certainly ARE trying to offend someone or, at the very least, you know you are poking the proverbial bear with a stick to see what happens.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Tuesday, August 06, 2019 - 1:07 pm:

With all due respect, we should have a Civil debate about this, after all Other Star Trek Fans notice this, and are talking about it,

By ScottN (Scottn) on Tuesday, August 06, 2019 - 2:26 pm:

Maybe the fact that nobody else is talking about it indicates that they have no problem with it.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Tuesday, August 06, 2019 - 4:21 pm:

ScottN, but they are talking about it, I posted the articles in this thread, while I'm a Christian myself, I have several close Jewish Friends, and some Jewish Individuals are very sensitive about this, some Jewish Star Trek Fans are indeed upset and offended that it seems Star Trek is leaving Jewish Humans out of the Future

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Tuesday, August 06, 2019 - 4:32 pm:

I'm a Lutheran, Jeff. I don't remember seeing any reference to any character being one on any Trek show. Does this indicate that Roddenberry, et. al. despise Lutherans? Come to think of it, how many Christians are represented in Trek? I actually can't think of any (there may have been one or two so I'm open to correction).
Maybe Roddenberry saw a future without organised religion (of which the Jewish faith is one- albeit a very old one)?
Point is, conspiracies are easy to create if you have the paranoia to do it.
I just think you are being deliberately provocative to get some traction on at least one of your myriad of posts.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 - 10:33 am:

Rodney & ScottN, this book
"Future Perfect: How Star Trek Conquered Planet Earth" by Jeff Greenwald, mentions how
the Star Trek franchise seems reluctant to show that the Jewish People exist in the Future of Humanity, I forgot which page, since I no longer have this book,he mentions how in the history of the Star Trek Franchise there has not been a single Jewish character, see this link,
https://www.amazon.com/Future-Perfect-Conquered-Planet-Earth/dp/0140277986

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 - 2:14 pm:

Well, since Gene envisioned the future without religion, I'd say no.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 - 6:59 pm:

ScottN, but we are talking about Jewish Human Characters in Star Trek in the Ethnic sense, not in terms of religion, Remember when in
Star Trek: The Next Generation when Worf's human adoptive parents were shown, originally it was supposed to be made explicitly clear in the episode that they were Jewish humans, but then the Explicit reference was left out, the Jewish writers wimped out of putting Jewish Humans in the Future of Humanity, Since Worf is Klingon, if he had
Human Parents who adopted him, if his Adoptive Human Parents were ethnically Jewish, ,that wouldn't make Worf Jewish ,

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, August 15, 2019 - 12:57 am:

What the heck is your obsession with this?

Have you not yet realized that nobody else gives a darn, including those of us who are ethnically Jewish?

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Friday, August 16, 2019 - 2:55 pm:

Many Star Trek Fans, Jews & Non-Jews alike are indeed Fixated or Obsessed about this issue, I did a Google Search and Found this article,https://forward.com/culture/383785/star-trek-goes-less-jewish-than-it-has-ever-gone-before/

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Friday, August 16, 2019 - 4:35 pm:

One article....

*Slow clap*

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Saturday, August 17, 2019 - 12:03 pm:

Rodney, here is another article asking why Jewish Humans are left out of the Fictional Star Trek Future , http://www.friesian.com/trek.htm#note-1
People have said the Superb Jewish actor
Paul Rudd, would be great as a Jewish Human character in Star Trek: Discovery or the upcoming series Star Trek: Picard
Back to the Future, Star Trek: Discovery is no longer a Prequel series, at the end of Season 2, the Discovery and her Crew went forward in time 1,000 years, Season 3 of Discovery will take place in the 32nd Century !!! Will the Discovery and her crew ever return to the 23rd Century, or will they forever stay in the 32nd Century ?

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Thursday, August 29, 2019 - 5:04 pm:

Besides Paul Rudd, what other real life
Jewish actor or actress could play a ethnically Jewish Human Character on Star Trek: Discovery or the Upcoming series Star Trek: Picard ?
Let's give suggestions, how about.. Seth Green

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Thursday, August 29, 2019 - 5:11 pm:

I looked it up Seth Green, played a Jewish character on an episode of the famous TV show
"The 70's Show" he played the character of
Mitch Miller, see this Link,
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0720169/

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, August 29, 2019 - 9:15 pm:

Nobody here cares.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Thursday, September 26, 2019 - 1:40 pm:

The Star Trek: Discovery episode
"New Eden" showed Michael Burnham make a reference to Judaism among other Human Religions, still a far cry from showing that the Jews, Jesus's own people still exist in the Fictional Future
from Memory-Alpha-Fandom.com it stated under Jews
"

The Jewish people were an ethno-religious group on Earth and Omega IV, with a religion that worshiped God. (TOS: "The Omega Glory"; VOY: "The Killing Game") Many members of the faith could read or speak Hebrew.

In 2365, a hologram representing a comic mentioned a Jewish person in one of his jokes. (TNG: "The Outrageous Okona")

The joke was told at a moment when Data had ordered the computer to speed up the comic's routine, and can only be heard by slowing the playback of the DVD. The joke was not in the original script, which simply states that the comic is to speak at a ridiculously fast pace.
Two Orthodox Jews passed a newspaper stand on the streets of New York where Benny Russell had talked to a newspaper salesman earlier. (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")

In 2374 a holographic Nazi SS officer in a World War II holoprogram run by the Hirogen on the USS Voyager remarked that Jews would fall defeated before peoples of German ancestry, and could not be saved by "the Christian Savior," nor "the God of the Jews". (VOY: "The Killing Game")

The Vulcan salute, first featured in the TOS Season 2 episode "Amok Time", is modeled on a benediction hand sign done with both hands by Jewish Kohanim (descendants of the ancient priestly class) when blessing the congregation of a Jewish synagogue. Leonard Nimoy, who improvised the salute, remembered it from his childhood and suggested it to the show's director.

Numerous mytho-religious Jewish people have been mentioned in Star Trek, including Moses, David, and Solomon. At the same time, several prominent 20th century Jews have also been referenced including Albert Einstein, Isaac Asimov, and The Marx Brothers.

Theodore Bikel and Georgia Brown, who played Sergey and Helena Rozhenko respectively, are noted in the entry on the episode "Family" in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion as being well-known in the Yiddish theater. The Companion suggests that this background, coupled with their characters' last name, Rozhenko, implies that Worf's parents were Jewish. According to Michael Piller, an early draft of the episode portrayed the Rozhenkos as Jewish, but Piller and Rick Berman (themselves both Jewish) decided to remove explicit references.[1]

In "New Eden", a stained glass window depicts Jesus Christ with the acronym INRI, which stands for "Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum", latin for "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews".

Also RIP Aron Eisenberg, the Jewish actor who played the Ferengi Nog on
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, he passed away on September 21, 2019 at the age of 50, some people have asked are the Ferengi supposed to be an anti-semitic stereotype, ? People have pointed out that Jewish actors & actresses are often used to play Ferengi, just like some have said the Majority of Klingons in Star Trek are played by African Americans

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, September 27, 2019 - 12:19 am:

Good for you.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Monday, September 30, 2019 - 11:43 am:

Myself and other Christian Star Trek fans don't understand, why Star Trek seems so Afraid of Showing that Jewish Humans exist in the Future, just like other Human Ethnic groups, Many Christian & Jewish Star Trek Fans alike wonder about this, after all, we have pointed out how in the Old Testament of the Bible it says in
Jeremiah 31:35-37 , that basically as long as there is a sun, moon, stars, earth, and sea, there will be a distinct people of Israel, a Jewish people, no matter what they do. It's God Promise, anyone can look up online
Jeremiah 31:35-37 I know "Good for me"
so, it seems absurd that in STAR Trek, Jewish humans are not shown as existing in the Federation & Starfleet

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Monday, September 30, 2019 - 4:44 pm:

Good for you.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Tuesday, October 01, 2019 - 9:30 am:

And if Jewish fans (*cough*) don't care, why do you need to care for us?

Give it a bloody rest.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Tuesday, October 01, 2019 - 9:31 am:

Pardon me. ... don't have an issue with it, why...

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Tuesday, October 01, 2019 - 1:58 pm:

I've been reading the Starfleet Corps of Engineers series, which is a collection of 60 (I think) short stories, and the captain of the USS Da Vinci, David Gold, is made perfectly clear to be Jewish from the very first story.

Not sure if that makes any difference to this thread, but if there's one instance of a Jewish character, there may be more.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Tuesday, October 01, 2019 - 4:23 pm:

AWhite (Inblackestnight) the Star Trek novels like the one you mentioned are Non-Canon,
see my earlier posts on this thread,
Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 will be taking place in the 32nd Century, and the upcoming series
Star Trek: Picard will take place at the end of the 24th century, this is a perfect opportunity for the Star Trek writers to show that Jewish Humans exist in the Future, and serve in Starfleet, I'm thinking Jewish actor Paul Rudd, would be great as a Jewish Human Serving in Starfleet, would Paul Rudd be willing to play the part ? He is going to be in the upcoming movie Ghostbusters 2020 coming out in 2020,
Also why not have a Spiritual Christian Human serving in Starfleet as well, but not in a negative stereotypical way

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, October 02, 2019 - 10:43 am:

Good for you.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Wednesday, October 02, 2019 - 4:21 pm:

ScottN, yes Good for me, can we have an honest intellectual civil debate

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Wednesday, October 02, 2019 - 11:43 pm:

I would like to know what your definition of "honest intellectual civil debate" is because sure as heck ain't what my definition of it is.

You started the thread making a lot of grand statements which people such such as myself, Francois, and AWhite have responded, refuting your claims. Heck, AWhite even posted references for you to look at that basically debunk your theory. You dismissed them quite rudely.

If we are saying "Good for you" too many times for your liking then perhaps consider the way you "debate". You don't debate by just restating the same stuff you posted initially. You respond to what others have said with new points or perhaps even a concession to the validity of their own.

Blimey I miss Luigi around here sometimes. He had ways of dealing with echo chamber pests such as yourself.

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Friday, October 04, 2019 - 4:46 pm:

I briefly skimmed the board, and I didn't see a mention of only canon references to Jewish characters, but it may be in there somewhere.

Regardless, given the state of CBS/Paramount/Bad Robot/Secret Hideout and whomever else may claim to own part of Trek at the moment, the term canon has very little meaning to this universe. The three new movies and shows are technically not part of the original continuity because the franchise split not long after Enterprise ended.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Monday, October 07, 2019 - 3:13 pm:

AWhite, I consider all the Star Trek TV series & Movies, including the Animated Series, to be Canon, all the series listed on this
Wikipedia entry, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek#Film_reboots_(Kelvin_Timeline)

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Saturday, November 30, 2019 - 5:02 pm:

Me again, in addition to ethnically Jewish characters in Star Trek: Picard &
Star Trek: Discovery, & a born again Christian character, what other human ethnic groups should be shown in these two Star Trek series ? that have not previously been shown in the Star Trek Canon

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Tuesday, December 03, 2019 - 3:14 pm:

Famous Star Trek Writer Dorothy D.C. Fontana has passed away at the age of 80 on
December 2, 2019 , see this link,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._C._Fontana I'm guessing D.C. Fontana would have been open to the idea of Star Trek having an Born again Christian Character in Starfleet, or an ethnically Jewish character

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Saturday, December 07, 2019 - 5:15 pm:

In 2019, with all the Social Justice Warriors, and people being more "Woke" and Socially Aware than ever before, you would imagine more Christian & Jewish Star Trek Fans would be asking for Openly Christian & Jewish Human Starfleet Officers shown in
Star Trek ,, we hope that with the upcoming series
Star Trek: Picard & Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery taking place in the 32nd century that the Star Trek writers don't miss this opportunity

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Saturday, December 07, 2019 - 5:49 pm:

Discovery takes place in the 23rd century, not the 32nd. (The first episode took place in May of 2256.)

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Monday, December 09, 2019 - 1:59 pm:

Charles Cabe(Ccabe) Yes, Discovery started out as a prequel series, however at the end of Season 2 of Discovery, the Discovery crew was forced to travel into the Future, the 32nd Century, look this up on Wikipedia or countless other online sources,
Star Trek: Discovery isn't a Prequel series anymore !!!!!
Also, RIP Rene Auberjonois aka Odo on
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, he passed away at the age of 79 on December 8, 2019 , Rene Auberjonois was a cool actor, he would probably think it would be cool to include a Christian or Jewish Human Character in Star Trek

Hi Jeff, Phil has recently appointed me as DS9 moderator. I am closing down this board for further comments (and deleting the parody versions which include my own) for the following reasons-

1) It is not related to DS9 (all of your talk has been about TOS- feel free to try and start this conversation on that board but don't hold your breath that it will last long)

2) I believe the topic has pretty much been exhausted. You've said your piece and we've said ours. There is not much more we need to say on it.

You are still welcome to post on-topic discussions on this board and I will decide whether or not they stay.

Thank you.
