The Final Season: Loose Ends

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: *** Old Sinks ***: The Final Season: Loose Ends
By Lisa Shock on Wednesday, March 03, 1999 - 10:58 am:

I recently remembered that they left poor Tom Riker in that Cardassian prison camp several years ago, even though Kira promised to try to free him. Just thought there might be other loose ends of storylines that should be tied up before the series ends, anyone?

By Hans Thielman on Wednesday, March 03, 1999 - 12:59 pm:

What ever became of the quantum stasis field Garak used on Odo that prevented him from regenerating?

By ScottN on Wednesday, March 03, 1999 - 1:59 pm:

How about Vash and Q? I'd kind of like to see them again... After Q-Less, they disappeared from the Alpha Quadrant.

By G. Hans on Wednesday, March 03, 1999 - 2:31 pm:

Kai Opaka in "Battlelines" said to Sisko "Your pagh and mine will cross again." Hasn't happened yet.

Also, the Founder Leader said in "Broken Link-The horror of websurfers :)" that Cardassia will fall at the hands of the Dominion. Looks like the opposite has happened.

By Meg on Wednesday, March 03, 1999 - 2:47 pm:

Maybe the Dominoin want them to think that, and then they will detroy them.

By Mike Konczewski on Wednesday, March 03, 1999 - 2:55 pm:

Q's last known whereabouts were the Delta Quadrant, but distance means nothing to him.

As Garak pointed out, the Founders will drive the Cardassians to keep fighting until either the Federation or Cardassia is destroyed, so Cardassia could still fall (obliquely) at the hands of the Dominion. That is, unless a peaceful solution is found.

I don't think the quantum stasis field was ever seen again after that episode. I got the impression that Garak's stasis field only worked on one Changeling at a time, so there wouldn't be a lot of use for it. Besides, the Founders almost never get directly involved in a fight, preferring to let the Jem Haddar take the hits.

Maybe they used it on Laas; that's why he couldn't leave the holding cell without Kira's help.

By Matthew Patterson on Wednesday, March 03, 1999 - 9:25 pm:

I can answer these right away.

Kai Opaka: Nope. This was never a plan. Ever.

Tom Riker: Nope. Frakes costs too much to get him on DS9.

Q belongs to Voyager now and I doubt he would have much use for Vash now that he's married.

Quantum stasis field: Good question! The Feds should probably put one of those in every room of every ship and building in the Federation just to be sure that even if a Changeling doe sget smuggled in as a vase or whatever, it won't be able to do anything.

By trevor b on Thursday, March 04, 1999 - 9:40 am:

here's a loose end. when will worf get eat eat gul dukat's heart for the murder of his wife. i know that she is in stovokor and all but are they going to let it go at that?

By norman on Thursday, March 04, 1999 - 12:49 pm:

Kai Opaka and the Female Changeling's threat on Caradassia should be loose ends addressed later this season. I have faith in the writers that both will be (We'll see, of course, esepcially now that there's the possibilities of movies in the future). I almost would like to see Kai Winn fall and Kai Opaka restored myself, but I think something else will happen, knowing this series.

I'd like to see Kurn again in his new identity show up in some confrontation with Worf (but please, Alexander, is not a necessity!)

Of course, there is Lwaxana Troi and her crush on Odo (shudder!) but that need not be wrapped up. :P

I'd almost like to see that Bajoran Collaborator from "Necessary Evil" return and try to have revenge on Kira and Odo (She didn't like her husband, but she loved having "the good life").

By Anonymous on Thursday, March 04, 1999 - 1:29 pm:

Perhaps First Minister Shakar will return and attempt to win back Kira.

By norman on Sunday, March 07, 1999 - 2:37 am:

Oh, how could I forget. The biogenetic gel Sisko had to trade. Somehow that has to come back to haunt him!

By Anonymous on Sunday, March 07, 1999 - 12:38 pm:

I'm almost certain it was mentioned in an episode that Thomas Riker was killed. Was it said by Eddington?
Could be wrong!

By Mike Konczewski on Monday, March 08, 1999 - 3:20 pm:

This is not even a rumor, just thinking out loud: what if the Borg suddenly showed up in the middle of the Dominion War?

Holy deus ex machina, Batman!

By Chris Thomas on Tuesday, March 09, 1999 - 1:34 am:

DS9 does not need the Borg - it tried using Next Gen aspects in its first season but it's done very well evolving on its own.

By Mike Konczewski on Tuesday, March 09, 1999 - 9:54 am:

Okay, here's a hot new rumor--there's speculation that Odo will be killed in the last episode! If you object, you're supposed to contact Paramount and let them know it's a bad idea (which I happen to think it is).

By Meg on Tuesday, March 09, 1999 - 1:09 pm:

What about, Garak. Why was he outcasted from Cardassia? I been wanting to know this. We all have theories, but I NEED to know.

How do you contact Parmount? IT is NOT a good idea to kill Odo. He's my favorite Character.

By Hans Thielman on Tuesday, March 09, 1999 - 3:37 pm:

Killing off Odo would be no worse than killing off Spock, Tasha Yar or Jadzia Dax. I think it would be rather dramatic if the powers that be decided to end Odo's life. Imagine Kira's reaction.

By Lauren on Thursday, March 11, 1999 - 8:21 pm:

I think that we're going to see more of Benny Russell (Sisko's 20th century alter-ego) before the show ends. Mabye they're planning to use him on the series finalle--it'd be great to see Benny make a name for himself by publishing his DS9 story... and just as great (if not as happy) to see him give up DS9 and writing and get a mundane office job. Either way, the plot would be left open enough for Voyager crossovers and possible movies.
Didn't St. Elsewhere end kinda like that, with none of the characters being who we thought they were?

re Odo's accent into oblivian: Yeah, a last minute death would be emotional, but there wouldn't be enough time to wrap it up if he died in the final episode. Not that the writers seem to care much about resolving deaths--I'm still a little bitter about the way Jadzia died. Until the episode about Stovokor(sp?) aired, I was having serious doubts about the writers' mental capacities.

By Number1GeordiFan on Thursday, March 18, 1999 - 3:02 pm:

I agree with Meg - tell us about Garak! I must know all his secrets!

By Electron on Thursday, March 18, 1999 - 3:39 pm:

What about that infamous Starfleet captain with the transparent head ?

By Matthew Patterson on Thursday, March 18, 1999 - 6:58 pm:

Looks like Benny will not be used in any significant way… Ira Steven Behr has said that if he got his way, which was not going to happen, the series would end with Benny walking around the DS9 set looking at all the props and plywood. Then they'd all get in their cars and he would follow René and Nana and Sid home and they'd all go to William Shatner's and Patrick Stewart's houses. Corny, but I'd love to see it! (Too bad it definitely won't happen, which is why we're being told about it.)

By Lauren on Saturday, March 20, 1999 - 10:26 pm:

Matthew, that would be _unbearably_ cool.

Nah... they'll probably do something silly like have Jake get married, or have Kira and Odo get married, or have Sisko and his girlfriend what's-her-name get married.

By Anonymous on Tuesday, March 23, 1999 - 7:00 pm:

::Nah... they'll probably do something silly like have Jake get married, or have Kira and Odo get married, or have Sisko and his girlfriend what's-her-name get married.::

Well, you're one for three.

While I'm giving away secrets, Soylent Green is people!

By Nate on Thursday, May 20, 1999 - 9:28 pm:

What happend to the members of Dukhats cult?

We never did see any of Sisko's many brothers and sisters (I think there were seven totall, can't remember the episode this was stated in though)?

Will Jake finally get on with his life and go to school?

What about Kai Opeaka?

Shouldn't Bashirs dad be getting out of jail soon?

I thought Jack, and the rest of the mutants were going to come up with a plan to defeat the Dominon? Guess they were busy with more important things?

I always thought Ezri should have done what Jadzia did, and let all of Dax's old hosts out for a bit. I think that would have been the most effective way for Worf to get on with his life, to be with Jadzia one more time.

We don't see the O'Brians enough!

What will happen after Zek dies? Will brunt become Nagus? Or maybe Moogie?

I may have missed it, but did they ever explian the Ketracel-White issue? They have to get it from somewhere? The Sonar (sp) maybe?

I guess we'll never see Alexander again.

Did Tosk ever get caught?

What about that chunck of brain they beamed out of Bashir in 'The Passenger'. I guess if your a mutant lossing some gray-matter dosen't do much to you?

I kind of thought the aliens from 'If Wishes Were Horses' should have shown-up again.

What about Zek's son Krax? Is he dead?

In 'Vortex' Odo gets a changling 'key', what happend to it? Also, why would the founders make a 'key' out of part of themselves?

Was the Ennis/Nol-Ennis conflict ever resolved?

What happend to Mollibok from 'Progress'?

Did Keiko shut her school down?

What happend to the Skrreea from 'Sanctuary'? Was there new home-world conquerd by the Dominon?

The Mirror Universe has sure been quiet most of this season. That last ep. with it, just didn't resolve anything for me.

Quark's Klingon 'wife?' has been absent for three seasons.

I thought that we would see more 'Our Man Bashir' type episodes?

What happend to that Klingon Bird-of-Pray of Dukhats?

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Friday, May 21, 1999 - 9:46 am:

>I thought Jack, and the rest of the mutants were going to come up with a plan to defeat the Dominon? Guess they were busy with more important things?>

Why? The Federation has them under house arrest. If the Dominion win they might get freed from their jail.

Just my 2 cents.

By Kevin S on Friday, May 21, 1999 - 10:41 am:

This isn't exactly a loose end, but what happened to the holo-communicator? Did the writers just forget about it?

By ScottN on Friday, May 21, 1999 - 2:04 pm:

Whatever happened to Vash ("Q-Less")?

By Steve K. on Tuesday, May 25, 1999 - 12:05 pm:

We have been shown that there are shapshifters in Starfleet Headquarters, and we know that they are elsewhere as well. Did the writers forget about this?

By ScottN on Tuesday, June 01, 1999 - 9:54 am:

Just watched the "Viewer Command" on SF channel. Number 1 episode was "The Trouble with Tribbles", which brings up a very important loose end...

What happened to all the tribbles they brought back from station K7?

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Tuesday, June 01, 1999 - 10:30 am:

I supose they hired a Dalek extermination service.

By ScottN on Tuesday, June 01, 1999 - 11:23 am:

Yeah, but they wouldn't be able to handle the stairs in Quarks!

By ScottN on Wednesday, June 02, 1999 - 1:44 am:

What happened to the "puppy" program from "The Forsaken"? I don't remember Miles taking it out for a walk, ever...

By D.K. Henderson on Thursday, June 03, 1999 - 5:19 am:

Did Lwaxana ever formally divorce Odo? Did she bear her child safely? Was Betazed ever liberated from the Founders?

By norman on Sunday, June 06, 1999 - 10:49 am:

SPOILER SPACE (LOOK ELSEWHERE IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FINALE)

1. Sisko's central purpose for being on the station was not achieved: The admission of Bajor into the Federation (Picard, the captain of its older sibling series, stressed the importance of this!)

2. The Changelings undercover in various areas of the Alpha Quadrant. Well, perhaps the female leader will comply and bring them out of hiding. (A number of them were probably infected, anyway).

3. Odo's Changeling buddy, one of the 100, who was infected by him. He's given up for lost.

4. Why Garak was truly exiled in the first place.

5. Kira's bond with the O'Briens. She carried their child and has a strong attachment (yes, this was dropped after the fifth season, but you know what I mean).

6. When Kira and Odo reenter the Gamma Quadrant (the FIRST TIME there has ever been transportation through the worm hole in two years) they are met with no resistance! (Well, Odo could've made himself clear as a Founder, maybe, I don't know)

7. The State of the Gamma. Bunches of Genetically manipulated species (Jem Haddar, Vortas, Tosks, etc.) What's going to happen to them? You cannot undo thousands of years of damage like that!

8. Jake's future is the least certain (unless his path will be similar as "The Visitor" except not the same grief for his father, or trying to "rescue" his father?) Where is he going to go?

9. Betazed! It was conquered by the Dominion! While maybe not facing the lengths of genocide like Cardassia, damage has still been done.

10. Section 31 is hardly resolved, but that's to be expected.

11. Sisko not confronting or seeing a price for his crisis of ethics in "Pale Moonlight." (There had to be some price, even if the outcomes were good. It's in the nature of this series. :) ) I was hoping something was to come, regardless how major for the biogenetic gel transfer.

12. And of course, the Vortas transkinetic abilities as Eris's. I'm sorry, but that was the establishment of an aspect of their species to begin with (Weyoun could've tried to do something such as this at the last minute, just to remind us, but then again, Garak would've been more in defense, and weakened the humor of his killing of the last Weyoun).

13. And yes, there's Tom Riker, Opaka, Lwaxana, etc. but that was already taken for granted.

By norman on Sunday, June 06, 1999 - 10:58 am:

SPOILER

14. Odo's contempt of the Federation turning the other way over Section 31's genocide of his own people! Where was it in the Finale? It seemed that he went the other direction and believed the Federation would help his race!

By ctowner1 on Wednesday, June 23, 1999 - 3:54 pm:

Does anyone know if the Stardate given for Odo's infection by Section 31 was PRIOR to his linking with Laas??

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Wednesday, June 23, 1999 - 4:07 pm:

Of course! Doesn't matter what the exact stardate was, but Odo was infected in the 4th season, passed it on to the Link in the 4th season finale, was reingected by the Female Founder in the early 6th season, and passed it on to Laas in the 7th season.

By Len on Thursday, June 24, 1999 - 10:40 am:

Ahh- of course! Thanks for the answer Matt - I was thinking that the Link got it through the Female Founder who got it through Odo. But I guess that couldn't be true because she was cut off from the Gamma Quadrant as of the end of Season 5 when the wormhole was mined. (Is that true?/that your reasoning?). In any event, the Lass episode was after the link with the Female Founder so Laas was susceptible anyway. (Guess I was Really asleep on this one! :^) Btw,I wonder if the virus is 100% infectious? (was that ever mentioned). I always thought it was a bit incredible that Section 31 could come up with such a devasting incurable disease without some real guinea pigs (they surely wouldn't have had free reign with Odo- would they? Or would they have been able to steal a "piece" of Odo to experiment with without his knowing?) I had hoped that it would be revealed by the last ep that Section 31 had actually captured 1 or more of "The 100" and used them as guinea pigs to develop the virus. That would have been a pretty clever twist and made the very existence of the virus more believable (or course who's to say that DIDN'T happen? Those 31ers are such sneaky bastards.... :^)

By BrianB on Monday, June 28, 1999 - 11:26 pm:

Don't you just love it when The Beasts open a door and forget about it?

1. Kai Opaka probably achieved peace between the two warring factions on the lunar penal colony and is waiting to be cured of the condition that condems her to that moon and then rescued.

2. O'Brien's "puppy" program (as stated above), took no time at all to neglect the puppy until it "died".

3. Those aliens in "If Wishes Were Horses" lost interest in our heroes.

4. The fate of Cardassian orphans on Bajor.

5. Eris, the only telekenetic Vorta. Guess the rest forgot they could do that.

6. Are Quark and Grilka still married? Natima will be P-Oed. Quark and Grilka seem to have forgotten the other exists.

7. The series was founded on Sisko getting the Bajorans into the Federation, didn't happen. I thought he was supposed recover all nine of their orbs. We saw a few of them and what they were called, were the rest recovered when we weren't looking?

8. Trill symbionts were just about abandoned after "Equilibrium" just stu-pid stories about previous Dax hosts, their lovers, and Ezri's family, but nothing notable about the symbionts. Just 3 or 4 transplants. No follow-up on symbionts that get sick to their stomachs like in Odan's and what was that magic wand he waved across his belly (Mini Me and F.B., anyone?)

9. Tom Riker, presumably killed. According to Weyoun 6, all enemies of the state were killed. Perhaps killed when the Dominon were killing Cardassia's population.

10. If Odo is just like Laas and can be clouds, space dwelling jellyfish and shafts of light, he still can't make a face, just his mom's face. Think maybe the Great Link will unlock the secret to making faces?

By Mark Wells on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 7:50 pm:

The comments about "Eris" and her telekinetic abilities are interesting. Maybe it was decided that those abilities weren't very useful (compared to the benefits of having a Jem-Haddar soldier around) and they were removed in the next release of the Vorta gene sequence.

(I find "Eris" fascinating, not just because of how brilliantly she deceives Sisko, but also because of the symbolism of her name. Eris was the Greek goddess of chaos, and she was indirectly responsible for the Trojan War. Interesting parallels there. Similarly, one TNG episode had a character named "Melian", a member of a powerful alien race, who taught art and music to humans. Hmmm.)

By Murray Leeder on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 8:40 pm:

Eris was the goddess of strife, not of chaos. Her Latin name, "Discorda", is a source of a less-common English word for the same.

By Alfonso Turnage on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 8:49 pm:

Oh, I think telekinetic abilities would have made/kept the Vorta very formible aides to the Jem
Haddar. The Vorta could remove the Fed/Kling weapons from their opponents and leave them vulnerable.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 9:04 pm:

This is why the traitor in STVI was named Valeris.

By Hans Thielman on Thursday, July 01, 1999 - 11:54 am:

1. Will the Romulans ever learn about Sisko and Garak's plotting to get them into the war?
2. Will Ezri have an experience similar to Jadzia in "Facets" from the 3rd season?
3. Will Jake ever go to that writing school on Earth?
4. Will Starfleet try to wean the Jem Haddar troops off Ketracel white?
5. Who will Starfleet send to replace Sisko as commanding officer?
6. Will a Starfleet officer take over as chief security officer aboard DS9?
7. Who is going to take over Sisko's restaurant after Joseph Sisko's death?
8. Where on Earth will the O'Briens live? Minsk, perhaps?
9. With O'Brien gone, who will fix the station?
10. Who will take over as Kai?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Thursday, July 01, 1999 - 5:11 pm:

1. Well, they would have found out if Garak hadn't had Vreenak killed. I would really like to find out that it really was an accident, just as a little plot twost. I mean, who doesn't think that Garak had him killed?

2. Every Trill has to do it sometime.

5. Who says Starfleet has to replace Sisko? Kira does a good job, she has the equivalent rank for the job, and it is a Bajoran station. I think the provisional government would like o keep her there, and I think Starfleet wouldn't mind keeping its experienced captains and admirals in the fleet. It's not like there aren't any STarfleet officers on the station. (Although it occurs to me that Rom will probably be chief engineer now. This is not good.)

6. Well, Bajorans do know military stuff. I guess whoever was first under Odo will do it. Could be Starfleet. Could be Bajoran. Odo had both working for him.

7. I bet Jake would do it. Possibly Sisko, if he weren't a Prophet.

8. Maybe I'm just being dense, but why can't they live in San Fransisco? That's where the Academy is. It would be logical, and it looks like O'Brien could use the exercise he'd get from walking to work.

9. Rom (God help us all.)

By ScottN on Thursday, July 01, 1999 - 5:52 pm:

Mpatterson,

Rom will probably go back to Ferenginar since he's Nagus.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Thursday, July 01, 1999 - 6:00 pm:

I doubt that Ferengi society could put up with Rom as Nagus. But you never know… in which case the repair duties would probably fall to whoever was first under O'brien.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Friday, July 02, 1999 - 2:36 pm:

Regarding who will replace who on DS9, the ansewer is obvious. The people who did there boss's job when he/she left the station. (for example, Trials and Tribbile-ations and about 100 episodes.) Except for Kira, Bashir, and Dax.

By BrianB on Friday, July 02, 1999 - 3:01 pm:

With Rom as the President and Leeta as first lady, Ferengenar is dumbed down and probably no longer a power in the quadrant. Does anyone see the former-Nagus's 285 new rules of acquisition and the Ferengi Benevolence Association from "Prophet Motive" coming to pass?

By Nathan K. on Sunday, July 04, 1999 - 5:55 pm:

A note on BrianB's number 6 above:

Quark and Grilka are not still married. They were divorced at the end of "The House of Quark."

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Sunday, July 04, 1999 - 10:34 pm:

They did actually wrap up one of the loose ends. Way back on the beginning of this board, someone noted that Cardassia hadn't fallen to the Dominion. Well, guess what happened in the most awesome finale episode of any series ever except for possibly the Mary Tyler Moore show or Cheers?

What is this strange fascination with the audiobooks you have? Besides, the books are non-canon. All of them except Mosaic and Pathways.

By Len on Thursday, August 19, 1999 - 8:47 am:

why are "Mossaic" and "Pathways" canon? What are they about anyway?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Thursday, August 19, 1999 - 3:04 pm:

The person that wrote them was, at the time, one of the producers of Voyager, so she declared that they were canon. And so they are. And it was evening, and it was morning, the first day.

No, anyway, Mosaic is Janeway's story, while Pathways tells the story of the other eight characters, minus Seven of Nine since we already know all the good bits. (Kes appears and tells her story too. I like Kes!)

By BrianB on Thursday, August 19, 1999 - 3:06 pm:

They were written by Jeri Taylor, the co-creator of Voyager, now Creative Consultant. Mosaic is the life story of Katherine Janeway and Pathways are brief backstories of the remainder of the senior staff including Kes thru Neelix's memories. Jeri Taylor must work hard to keep Berman & Braga (The Beasts) from usurping the continuity.

By BrianB on Thursday, August 19, 1999 - 3:08 pm:

Obviously MPatterson, we replied at the same time. :)

By Len on Friday, August 20, 1999 - 8:30 am:

hmnm..interesting..but are they GOOD??? (either Mosaic or Pathways?) (and if so, WHY? i.e. writing, plot, theme, etc?)

By BrianB on Friday, August 20, 1999 - 1:09 pm:

Well Jeri tells the stories well enough. Mosaic has Janeway's life flash before her eyes in bursts during a Kazon crisis. And in Pathways, the crew tell their life stories in bursts as if they were campfire stories during a crisis were they were incarcerated by all-new hostile aliens. None of which helps advance or solve their present-tense crises. None that I'm aware of, I listened to the abridged books like ERIC. So are they GOOD? They're OK. They're just backwash, color, whatever.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, August 20, 1999 - 3:14 pm:

I liked Neelix and Kes' stories from Pathways. They really added some depth to the characters which was and is still totally missing from the show. I'm not a Janeway fan, so I didn't really like her story, and the stories for the rest of the crew are nothing special.

In The Final Chapter Worf kills Gowron -

Worf (Federation citizen and officer with a tenuous link and some sort of dual citizenship)
KILLS
Gowron (Leader of a sovereign state, himself chosen by a Federation citizen).

Worf was going to be made leader of the empire, until he gave his position to Martok. Worf was then made Federation Ambassador to Qo'nos.

Picard was all in a huff when Worf killed Duras, who just a councilman. But now Worf killed the HEAD OF STATE.

Maybe Martok pardoned Worf. But shouldn't the Federation have something to say? You can't just have your citizens dabbling in the politics of other countries and then let them off the hook because the Government they started gives you the thumbs up! What kind of country would do that?

Oh wait, the US does it in the Middle East and Latin America all the time. Never mind.

Ah, but SF is Starfleet Command, and the seat of the Academy, and the site of every temporal incursion on Earth that's been committed by a Trek crew. (Well, not really, but it's had way more than its fair share.) The Federation would surely rebuild the place. And we've seen how fast they can throw together a starship. Surely a city wouldn't be that much more difficult. (Next time, they might want to think about some defense systems.)
