Ezri Dax...The Seven of DS9?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: *** Old Sinks ***: Ezri Dax...The Seven of DS9?
By Rene on Sunday, March 14, 1999 - 1:51 pm:

Some people claim that DS9 is becoming the
Ezri Dax show just like Voyager become the
Seven of Nine show. I completely disagree!
Unlike Seven, Ezri has never saved the station.
And in the dozen or more episodes that have aired
so far, Ezri was the center of the plot for
maybe three of the episodes. Seven of Nine
is the center of action for 2 out of every
3 Voyager episodes.

By Trekmaster on Sunday, March 14, 1999 - 5:45 pm:

I agree, I think Ezri is more like the Katie Couric of DS9 because she seems rather spunky.

By marten on Sunday, March 14, 1999 - 6:06 pm:

However I'd say that the premise of Seven's existence (Once Borg) is something new and 'interesting' to star trek (yes yes I remember Hugh and the small colony in some voyager episode) where a new Dax is .. what it says.. a new Dax.

By David Rod on Monday, March 15, 1999 - 2:03 am:

I think people get the feeling that her character
is too new to get the main story pushes she has
gotten. She seems a little rushed but they did
a great job of putting this character into
place with it being the last season and all, and
not having that many episodes free for us to get
used to her. She really doesn't take that long
to get used to.

By Mark Morgan on Monday, March 15, 1999 - 7:40 am:

(begin digression):

And, of course, the outfit. I agree with the Chief on how it much imporved Counselor Troi to get her out of the snowbunny suit and into an actual uniform. Similarly, Ezri is easier--for myself--to appreciate because she is dressed in the same outfit as the guys, instead of 7's form-fitting catsuits.

(end digression)

Ya know, one of the things I like best about DS9 is that the creators are willing to "waste" time on character development episodes. Maybe I'm just cranky this morning, but Voyager still feels like a group of button-pushers--and Seven. The recent episode featuring Harry made me much more interested in his character than anything that came before. So I, for one, haven't minded the Ezri Dax episodes.

However, as my brother likes to say, the Dominion war seems to be "the war they never show, the war they never show, hey-ho the derry-o..."

By mf on Monday, March 15, 1999 - 1:21 pm:

Sorry. Ezri just doesn't have the implants. Or the borg stuff, either.

By Chris Ashley on Monday, March 15, 1999 - 8:51 pm:

It isn't Ezri's fault that she can't compare to Jadzia, but I still miss former Dax. [sigh]

By Rene on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 - 9:51 am:

I think Ezri is great. I just loved her in that
episode where Joran's memories helps her catch
a killer.

By Matthew Patterson on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 - 7:24 pm:

I dunno… I rather agree with Serena in
"Chrysalis." "Once she realizes that she's more
than just the sum of her parts, she'll really be
something." Although I think this should be taken
one step further, that once she realizes that she
is the sum of ther parts ahe'll really be
somethijng. I mean, every time we see her she's
commenting on how Torias did this, or Emony liked
this, or Lela was a lot taller, or something like
that. It's only in episodes like that one with
Joran, when we see some Ezri in there along with
the Dax, that we really see something special. I
think once she learns how to fully integrate and
be truly Ezri Dax, not just Dax or Dax's hosts,
she'll be as good as Jadzia ever was.

By Sharon Jordan on Wednesday, March 17, 1999 - 7:28 pm:

Ezri has done pretty good, intergrating herself with her formal hosts personalities. I agree, she is spunky!!But I like the idea that she wasn't trained in joining like Jadzia was. If she falters in some way, there is an explanation! I like to think she can go batty sometime down the road. I always wondered why one has to be well trained to be joined, if they show her becoming too much of one personality, or puzzled by another, like the episode with Joran, gets me wondering what is being taught in that symbiant training school. She can be a great tool into exploring the Trill culture!!

By Jason Krietsch on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 5:21 pm:

I wonder why they took this time to take a cast member, kill her, then resurect her. I think everyone would have been happier if Yar returned, not in a parralell universe or anything, but actualy returned, instead of Dax. True it isn't exactly Jadzia.
But she has gotten better, in the first episodes of the season, I couldn't stand her, now I tolerate her.

By Giorgi on Thursday, April 01, 1999 - 9:07 am:

I can't remember if there was a Jadzia in the parralel universe. If there is one I wonder if she is still alive.

By Lea Frost on Thursday, April 01, 1999 - 10:26 am:

There was a Jadzia in the AU, but "The Emperor's New Cloak" establishes that she's dead too. (Although alt-Ezri doesn't have the Dax symbiont, a good choice on the part of the writers.)

By Adam Howarter on Thursday, April 01, 1999 - 9:26 pm:

They didn't "take this time to take a cast member, kill her, then resurrect her." Terry Ferial (yeah I know I spelled it wrong so shoot me) left the show.

By Scott McClenny on Sunday, April 18, 1999 - 3:28 pm:

There was a Jadzia in the Mirror Universe but
she was killed as well(see THE EMPEROR'S NEW
CLOAK for details).

Ok,am I the only one who is in total love with
both EZRI and SEVEN?I think that they are both
great characters.
Put them together and you've got the PERFECT
STAR TREK WOMAN!!!!:)

I hope that if VOYAGER does return to the Alpha
Quadrant that the CREATORS will decide to add
Ezri to the cast, although probably unlikely to
happen as I just read in Star TRek:The Magazine
that Rick Berman says they have NO PLANS to add
any new faces to the cast.Although the thought of
EZRI and SEVEN as shipmates...:)

And Ezri is such a sweet little Dutch-Canadian
Trill!!!:)

I am with you! It's refreshing in a way, for the writers to bring on a new Dax. She's not just a substitute for the old one; she is a whole new character in her own right!

Clearly, there are some valid reasons for bringing a new Dax aboard: avoid the "flying jockstrap" syndrome that TNG had when Yar left (yeah, I know we have Kira, but she would be the only woman in the cast without Ezri). Also, *Dax* remains a part of the show, even if *Jadzia* doesn't. In a sense, that aspect of the character is still with us.

Hi, Finally got to the Kitchen Sink.
I read every post here thus far and I want to try to reply to all of it and add my thoughts.
Whoever created this link must've been on the same frequency as me. In most of my previous posts I wouldn't refer to New Dax as Ezri Dax but as New Dax. Too much New Dax. I don't know which is worse, too much Ezri or too much Vic.
I suppose it IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for showcase so much New Dax otherwise all other fans will feel short-changed, "Why didn't they explore that New Dax?!" Although I believe cramming in as many Ezri scenes as possible to make up for six seasons gives the appearance of her taking food out of the mouths of the others. She's that one suckling pig shoving her way on top of the others for that, er, um, too much Ezri.
As I sit here, write and see my own words on the screen, I ponder and resolve what's really bothering me. This series is mostly a soap opera. New characters always get special attention. Once I realize that, I understand. It was also bothering that Old Dax was the heavy. Of course when Worf was new to the series, I didn't like him being such a heavy no matter how much I loved the character. But if A leads to B leads to C leads back to A (Capt. Braxton, Voy "Future's End"), then A = DS9 is a soap opera.
Sorry I got carried way. But from now on, I'm going to call Ezri "Seven of DS9".

Is Nicole deBoer the girl in the white nightgown in the surprise party Michelob Light commercial?

By M. Jenkins on Saturday, July 17, 1999 - 12:14 am:

I thought that was a pink thing she was wearing. And if you can actually read the note (it took me several tries), the note is addressed to 'Nicole'. I'd have to say it is.

All I know is that Nicole was on an Outer Limits
this past season and also was a regular on the
Sci-Fi Channel series Mission Genesis.
She has about four or five websites dedicated
to her on the internet.:)

Ezri is NOT the Seven of DS9. Just look at their characters. Ezri Dax is a person, with flaws, emotions, and the like. Seven is a tall woman with a steel wonderbra. That's all we're ever shown on the show.

By dupperisky on Saturday, January 12, 2002 - 9:13 pm:

IMHO, DeBoer's (the woman's, not the character's) delicate beauty is more attractive than Ryan's (same as before) raw, "Come •••• me. Hard" (that's the way I see it) sexiness.

By Merat on Sunday, January 13, 2002 - 2:19 pm:

In the books that take place after the series ends, Ezri really does "come into her own." I recommend them, starting with, I belive, Avatar.

Personally I can't stand ezri, she's so irritating and whinny. Jadzia all the way and forever

By me on Sunday, April 03, 2011 - 9:24 pm:

Ezri is my least favorite character in the show. All she ever did was whinning, she was a horrible counsel as well. I don't know how she made it in the starfleet at the first place. She's as irritating as Wesley and Kes

By Just a fan on Sunday, April 17, 2011 - 9:50 am:

Hated her with passion. Weakest character on DS9
