Jadzia Dax

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: *** Old Sinks ***: Jadzia Dax
By JJ on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 - 9:47 am:

Jadzia was my favorite character on any Star Trek series, and I was heartbroken to see her killed. Worse still she has been replased by Ezri who is simply anoying.

By Rene on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 - 9:49 am:

I disagree. I think Ezri is a great character.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 - 12:55 pm:

Ezri is a bit annoying, but TPTB made her that way so she wouldn't act like Jazia, the Next Generation. It would be nice if she would grow up a little and act her age (357).

By Mike Konczewski on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 - 1:27 pm:

I wonder, just how exactly should a 357-year old young person with multiple personalities act?

By Sharon Jordan on Wednesday, March 17, 1999 - 7:31 pm:

I think there is alot of wisdom accumalated in there, that helps one deal with it. Possible explanation?

By Alfonso Turnage on Thursday, March 25, 1999 - 6:25 pm:

I have to say I like Ezri and I like the fact that she is a Counselor which quite frankly is needed on DS9. I also liked Jadzia, but I think that beyond the fourth season season finale with few exceptions that she was poorly-written until her death scene. I honestly miss Jadzia, but I think her passing was great storywriting.

By Kyle Powderly on Sunday, April 18, 1999 - 2:53 pm:

I would not want the writers or producers on "DS9" to paint the floor in my house. They'd end up in the corner every time saying, "Duuuuhhh, how do we get out of here?" They keep writing themselves into corners they never seem to know how to get out of.

First, they introduce the Dominion, and that story line has shut down the initial premise of DS9 (that of alien races coming through the wormhole and interacting in one place) for season after season. The Dominion War is the sole driving force of this show now. Bleah! Too much time spent on one story line!

Worst of all, with the introduction of Worf TPTB had the opportunity to let him bounce off of everyone and really spice things up. Instead, they force he and Jadzia - one of potentially the best characters on the series - into this marriage baloney, and bog down the personal stories of all the characters in the series. Almost as bad as the Odo-Kira romance. Since they married Jadzia to Worf, they consistantly wasted her character, making her death at the hand of Dukat in the Temple all that more poigniant: they killed her in the same manner as they had made her live in her final few years - pointlessly.

As a side note, I wonder how much of Jadzia was Terry Farrell. I had a crush (much as a 35 year old can have a crush) on Terry Farrell/Jadzia Daz: feminine, strong, serious, playful, cool, passionate...what's not to like? But since seeing Farrell on that lame CBS show "Becker", I'm thinking that it was Dax and not Farrell that I was attracted to. Shame she existed only in fiction.

By Robin E. Cook on Tuesday, April 20, 1999 - 11:14 am:

Yeah, I miss Jadzia. But I don't agree that she was underutilized. Even in episodes where she was a sidekick or part of an ensemble ("Sons of the Empire," "One Little Ship," "Trials and Tribbleations") her character shone. I was annoyed at the lack of Dax episodes from season 5 onward. It appears they're trying to make up for that with Ezri.

By mattpesti on Thursday, May 13, 1999 - 1:47 pm:

You know after part two of the final chapter Dax
really is promiscuios. Dozens of lovers in about 4
1/4 seaso

By Chris Marks on Friday, May 14, 1999 - 7:04 am:

Robin, Jadzia wasn't underused?
Take 'Apocalypse Rising' as an example. The away team consists of Sisko (to command it), Worf (if you're going into a klingon warrior party, take a klingon), Odo (who knows more about changelings?) and O'Brien, even though Jadzia created the devices they're using, can handle a bat'leth as well as most klingons and (rather importantly I feel) can speak klingon fluently. As far as I can see, the only reason O'Brien went was so he could look flustered whenever a klingon interacted with him, which could probably have come out better if it had been Odo (Think about it, he's just become human. They could have had him getting drunk with the klingons, or anything).

And we've seen plenty of times that all the senior officers disappear off together when they feel like it, so even that dosn't cover it.

By Matt Pesti on Saturday, June 26, 1999 - 11:04 am:

So Dax has had dozens of lovers. At least 24. 24 divided by the 4 seasons dax was single would be 6 a season + Worf = 26. Let's not bring up curzon's old flames or Lenara Khan. So the higher plane stuff is trash.

By Chris Marks on Tuesday, June 29, 1999 - 2:51 am:

Firstly, does anyone else think that the throwaway line in 'Emperors New Cloak' about the mirror universe Jadzia being dead was somebody at Paramount saying 'Terry Farrell's never gonna work here again'?

Secondly, how much to we actually know about Jadzia? Not Jadzia Dax, but Jadzia (whatever family name). All I can think of is that she has four science degrees ('Dax'), is the only person ever to rejoin the symbiosis institute (either 'Playing God' or 'Facets')or whatever it's called (and don't the star trek creators love their characters to do things like that eg Kirk - the only man ever to beat the Kobiashi Maru test, Worf - the only Klingon in starfleet, Nog - the only ferengi in starfleet etc etc etc), and that she has a sister ('Bar Association'). Almost everything else can be explained by the symbiont (shuttle pilot (Torias), klingon culture (Curzon) etc). Also, the only real 'Jadzia' episode as opposed to a Dax episode was 'Meridian', and there wasn't a lot of Jadzia back story in that. I think in Prodigal Daughter, we learned more about Ezri than we did about Jadzia in six years.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, June 29, 1999 - 10:35 am:

I somehow get the feeling that Prodigal Daughter was a Jadzia story rewritten as an Ezri story. Terry Farrell always said that she wanted to see more of Jadzia's family and stuff. Maybe they had this one written, but redid it for Ezri when Jadzia died.

By Rusty S. on Tuesday, June 29, 1999 - 8:37 pm:

Jadzia's death was the best thing to happen to DS9

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, June 29, 1999 - 9:02 pm:

Sorry, no.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 3:04 pm:

Rusty, what planet are you from? Jazia was 1000% better than Ezri. I don't mean this as a critism of Nicole de Boer, but IMHO, Jazia was a more well developed charater.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 4:13 pm:

They might hae been able to do better with Ezri if they had had more time. Nicole did what she could, but they onl had 26 or so episodes in which to feature her.

By Rusty S. on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 4:37 pm:

The place is called Arlen....

By Alfonso Turnage on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 7:26 pm:

I honestly have to agree with Rusty S. Main characters manage to survive Starfleet dangers at an unrealistic rate. Jadzia's death came about because Terri F. wanted to leave the show, yet it was one of the top five stories of the sixth season. I thought the way they dealt with Jadzia's death(Sisko, even Worf) and Ezri's taking
over for her and not feeling as if she's going to
be able to measure up-as if she even wanted to be
joined in the first place. Jadzia's characterization took a slump(with few exceptions) from the start of the fifth season; Ezri's characterization is way better than anything they would have done carrying Jadzia on.
I also like the fact that Ezri is not the amazing
Dax; it sets her apart from Jadzia. What's the point of killing Jadzia if you're going to replace
her with a clone? I thought Ezri was a daring choice that for the most part paid off.

By Scott McClenny on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 1:50 pm:

If it weren't for Jadzia we would never have
Ezri.Jadzia WAS Dax for all but the last season,
it is from her that we learn what Dax is like.
Ezri simply added a new facet to the Dax character.
It was kinda like watching Dr.Who,each new actor
to the role brought something new that created
an entirely new facet of the Doctor's personality.
Likewise with Jadzia and Ezri we are treated to
two different aspects of Dax,but Dax remains Dax
Dax doesn't become a different character like the
Doctor Dax simply adds each new host's(or in the
case of the Doctor incarnation's)personality to
make it the some of who Dax is.
BTW:Too bad they didn't do anything like VOYAGER's
INFINITE REGRESS with Dax,would have been fun to
see how Ezri would have reacted or acted with split personality disorder.INFINITE REGRESS is
one of the best Seven episodes along with DARK
FRONTIER and SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME of the
fifth season.:)

By Sarah Perkins on Friday, September 24, 1999 - 4:19 pm:

Does anyone know the words to Jadzia's favorite song? The one Worf makes Vic sing in "Image in the Sand"? I desprately need them for a fanfic. Could someone who knows the song or has that tape post at least the first part of the words here within the next 3 days?

I'll be forever grateful.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Saturday, September 25, 1999 - 1:22 pm:

I think the new softback encyclopedia lists Jazia's favorite song as "All The Way". I don't know thw lyrics thought. (I just got the new encyclopedia today :)

By The Twonky on Wednesday, January 03, 2001 - 12:02 pm:

Note: Terry Farrell is allergic to latex and couldn't wear Klingon makeup, which is why she was not in "Apocalypse Rising."

By Anonymous on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 4:06 am:

No disrespect to Nicole deBoer, but Jadzia Dax was far, far better than Ezri (but the latter Dax needs at least another season to fully develop). Plus, Terry Farrell, you have to admit, is really sexy.

Jadzia Dax, RIP

By wondering on Monday, May 21, 2001 - 7:55 pm:

In all the episodes with Trills, didn't it seem like the host and symbiont always agree, always have the same attitude and reactions about everything? Trills never seem to talk to themselves, saying, "I'm of two minds about this", literally.
I never got the sense that the host and symbiont were individuals, did you? Sure, Ezri and Jadzia are different...maybe I wasn't being observant enough? Does anybody else agree?

By Electron on Sunday, May 26, 2002 - 4:29 pm:

Farrell Falls Off "Becker"

By serina on Tuesday, February 01, 2011 - 7:47 am:

Ezri was a pathetic, weak and whinny character! Jadzia was a confident, ispiring, beautiful and strong young woman full of life. There is no comparison!

By Julian on Sunday, April 03, 2011 - 8:44 pm:

Jadzia all the way and forever! An amazing character!

By Michael on Monday, July 11, 2011 - 9:08 pm:

Jadzia of course.
