Let's name the Female Shapeshifter

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: *** Old Sinks ***: Let's name the Female Shapeshifter
By Dave Murphy on Wednesday, May 19, 1999 - 2:52 pm:

Can we give the female shapeshifter a name? It might be a good idea because it's kind of a pain to type out "female shapeshifter" all the time. Besides, she should have a name.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Thursday, May 20, 1999 - 9:22 am:

Let's name her Spot. :)

By Female Shapeshifter on Thursday, May 20, 1999 - 9:47 am:

Wilma

By Anonymous on Thursday, May 20, 1999 - 12:23 pm:

How about "Moomfa"?

By Rizzo on Thursday, May 20, 1999 - 2:44 pm:

Mulak'shum'shi-kolop'nome (accent on the e)

Gumbette

By Slinky Frog on Thursday, May 20, 1999 - 7:54 pm:

Oda!!

By Odette on Thursday, May 20, 1999 - 8:43 pm:

Speaking of female shapeshifters,

Do changelings really have gender?

If not, it makes you wonder about Kira's and Odo's relationship.

By Chris Ashley on Friday, May 21, 1999 - 7:46 am:

Frankly, I don't want to know about the, ah,
mechanics of Odo/Kira. Some things are best left
a mystery. line eat

By Marian Perera on Friday, May 21, 1999 - 3:44 pm:

To Slinky Frog : So the Female Shapeshifter's name might be Oda? Then, if she changes into -

a fizzy drink -> Soda
a Jedi -> Yoda
a Voyager episode -> Coda
a Chinese temple -> Pagoda
a pre-Dax Trill -> Odan

By ScottN on Friday, May 21, 1999 - 3:48 pm:

marian,

If she changes into:

an internal combustion engine -> Moda
a water bag -> Boda

By ScottN on Friday, May 21, 1999 - 3:49 pm:

Let's name her Zelda, because she's kind of flaky :-). F. Scott Fitzgerald joke for the Great Unwashed out there...

By Meg on Saturday, May 22, 1999 - 10:08 am:

On the conversation about if Changlings have gender, this first came to my mind in the episode "Sanctuary" Those aliens on that episode (Are they Skreeans?) said taht they are used to dealing with Females. All the guys just kind of grimaced, even Odo. I was half expecting odo, to grow some long hiar and change his uniform into a dress.
Maybe what makes them Male or Female is some sort of enzyme in their goo. Because they can manufacture any parts that they really need.

By tjoe on Saturday, May 22, 1999 - 11:10 am:

Marian,

If she changes into:

A budget car -> Skoda
A sales measuring device -> Quoda
An '80s composer -> Giorgio Moroda

By rachgd on Saturday, May 22, 1999 - 5:25 pm:

A bad sitcom actress -> Rhoda.
A child pianist with a fascination with Mozart -> Shroeder (or Shroda)
-> Likewise "Little Lord Fauntleroy". (Remember that one?)
However, those last two are both male. So where do we stand on this issue? Can a shapeshifter appear to be of the opposite sex? After all, they can appear to be of other races. Surely such simple defining physical attributes as those that differentiate man from woman would be easy to any Founder with a modicum of ability?
Besides, it would hardly be practical, would it? You know how it is, you're trying to take over a quadrant, and you suddenly have to impersonate the Federation Vice-President..except you're male, and she is female! AND you're the only shapeshifter around - oh, well. End of evil plot, then, I guess.

By ScottN on Saturday, May 22, 1999 - 11:39 pm:

Uh, rachgd, that's a fascination with Beethoven, not Mozart.

SPOILER
Can a shapeshifter appear to be of
the opposite sex?

Odo impersonated the female shapeshifter.

By rachgd on Sunday, May 23, 1999 - 7:17 am:

Well, look who's such a cultured Nitpicker! In depth knowledge of composers, no less! Unless it's just the slightly less-impressive in depth knowledge of the Peanuts. Well, ScottN?
Okay, so I was wrong, It's been a while. Sorry.

By ScottN on Sunday, May 23, 1999 - 11:38 pm:

It's both... And rachgd, take it in the icecream (good humor) in which it was intended... Just so you'll know what kind of warped sense of humor I have, when someone at work says "I'm done", I comment that he looks rather more like Shakespeare or Milton, or tell them that yes, I heard the bell tolling... So, I'm one of those really weird people who knows all sorts of useless trivia... (How else would I have lost at Jeopardy!, or Won Ben Stein's Money?)

By rachgd on Monday, May 24, 1999 - 2:49 am:

Mmmmm, icecream. Seriously, ScottN, I was entirely unoffended! If I were, indeed, that sensitive, I'd never have dared post anything here at all!
Oh, and when people tell me that they're done, I have been heard to ask, "So, you're not an island, then?"
;o)

By ScottN on Monday, May 24, 1999 - 11:12 am:

Most triumphant, rachgd! Actually though, in my misspent youth when I played D&D, my favorite character was an island, and time and tide waited for him... His name was... Noman

By rachgd on Tuesday, May 25, 1999 - 1:27 am:

Hey, ScottN - just what is Won Ben Stein's Money?
Noman...cute.

By Slinky Frog on Friday, June 04, 1999 - 7:07 pm:

Ben Stein, an actor, best know as the teacher in "Ferris Beuller's Day off" going over the attandence report, going "Beuller, Beuller, anyone know where Beuller is, Beuller"

He has his own game show on "Comedy Central" where you answer funny trick questions and win "His money" if you win.

Boy, when I suggested Oda, I didn't realize I was going to start something.

You guys are funny though.

luv ya

By Lea Frost on Friday, June 04, 1999 - 11:37 pm:

My suggestion: She Who Must Be Obeyed! :-)

By rachgd on Saturday, June 05, 1999 - 1:24 am:

No, Lea, that's my Mum!

By ScottN on Saturday, June 05, 1999 - 11:43 pm:

Back to the jokes on "Oda"

If she becomes a flightless bird: Doda
If she becomes friends with Mary Tyler Moore: Rhoda

By BrianB on Thursday, June 10, 1999 - 2:16 am:

I've always referred to her as Odo's Mom.
Speaking of Ben Stein. He is so cool. I want to see him play an alien. He would've made a better Think Tank character than Jason Alexander did.
I shudder to think what the follow-up post will say when everyone responds to Odo's Mom regarding the times they linked and did it as solids.

That would be totally awesome!

So would that make our favorite cheif of station security .. Odo-pus? (I just had to use that one!)

By rachgd on Monday, July 26, 1999 - 2:19 am:

LOL David Hensley!!!

Very good.

Still laughing!!!

By David Hensley on Tuesday, July 27, 1999 - 5:39 pm:

It's good to know when I've made another laugh...

But seriously, regarding "Odo's mom" - Odo and Laas, and the little one that gave Odo his changeling abilities back were called "infants." So, my question is - do the Founders "reproduce", and if they are all-one, how do they "make" a new consciousness?

Someone should start a board regarding each race/culture - the Founders, the Jem'Hadar, Klingons, Vulcan/Romulans, Cardassians, Bajorans, etc. But where?

By M. Jenkins on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 2:55 am:

Name her Winn Jr. Or Winn Sr. Or Gertrude.

By rachgd on Monday, August 02, 1999 - 1:37 am:

Love it, M!
Let's go with Gertrude!

By ScottN on Monday, August 02, 1999 - 5:15 pm:

Wouldn't that make Odo's last name Hamlet?

By Electron on Monday, August 02, 1999 - 5:34 pm:

Gertrude Goo !

By rachgd on Monday, August 02, 1999 - 11:47 pm:

Professor ScottN strikes again!

By ScottN on Tuesday, August 03, 1999 - 12:38 am:

I told you once, I told you twice, rachgd, I'm a dilletante! I am disappointed that nobody liked my suggestion for "Zelda". I mean, the F.S. was rather flaky at the end of the series.

By Urac Daria Sigma on Saturday, December 18, 1999 - 2:37 am:

We've just been calling her 'Odo's mum'.

By The Tim Lord on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 3:54 am:

Speaking of the "oda" jokes, has anyone heard Weird Al Yankovich's take on "Lola" by the Kinks? (Think little green man from Star Wars)

By The Chronicler on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 3:55 am:

Let's name her Puddles.

By ScottN on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 9:45 am:

If she's named Oda, and she changes into an Iron Chef, she'd be Morimoda.

Ducks and runs away...

By Mikey on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 12:07 pm:

How about Spoodge?

By Miko Iko on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 12:21 pm:

By Anonymous on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 1:58 pm:

How 'bout Protea?

(Proteus was the God who could change his shape at will)

By X on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 4:55 pm:

Mrs. Slime

By ScottN on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 10:55 pm:

If she's named Oda, and changes into a baseball player, would that make her Manny Moda?

hides from the audience

By John A. Lang on Friday, July 20, 2001 - 6:38 am:

Some real old names....ones you rarely hear anymore...

A funny thought:

By Q, God of Lies on Friday, July 04, 2003 - 6:15 pm:

or...

Your forgetting what she is though, a GOD:).

She could be "Sofscrubea, God of Orange Shampoo and Soap"

By Cockney Colombian on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 - 12:42 pm:

ScottN - Wouldn't that make Odo's last name Hamlet?

Except when he's shapeshifting in which case he becomes Omelette!

By Polls Voice on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 - 5:00 pm:

How about... Mrs. Incredible?

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 - 8:12 pm:
