DS9 Trekouplets

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: DS9: DS9 Kitchen Sink: *** Old Sinks ***: DS9 Trekouplets
By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Sunday, July 11, 1999 - 3:29 pm:

I've been saying for some time that I need to do some of these. Here's the first set. I fully expect them to be guessed within an hour because I'm not that good at this!

1) There were cannons to the left, and cannons to the right,
And the Prophets lent a hand in this great fight.

2) A battle rages on, the gods are crying,
And a favorite character is dying.

3) A card from a game favored by a nation
Is just the thing to liven up the station.

4) Odo’s skin flakes off, so does his hair,
In this episode, the horror of web surfers everywhere.

5) Without the symbiont, Jadzia’s toast!
But can they get it from Dax’s new host?

6) It rains on Ferenginar like someone turned on a faucet.
And I think Brunt needs to get out of the closet.

7) On a freezing cold planet, the Rio Grande crashes
But I guess O’Brien fixes it with a couple of patches.

8) Sisko’s not sure if he likes being the Emissary
So the Prophets send him a man from a prior century.

9) One baby is born, another is recovered
Shakaar comes to the station, one more of the hundred is discovered.

Yep! The score is now Meg 6, ScottN 3, no mistakes from anyone. More will be up sometime tomorrow.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Monday, July 12, 1999 - 9:49 pm:

Here's the new set, have fun with them please!
I fully expect you to solve them with ease.

1) A crime is committed, on Dax is the blame
But are Curzon and Jadzia one and the same?

2) The Jem'Hadar destroy one of our favorite ships
When Sisko, Jake, and Nog go on a field trip.

3) When a race from the Gamma to the Alpha Quad came
Some officers were trapped in a deadly game.

4) "I am not Curzon!" Dax would always say
Yet here she helped Klingons and won the day.

5) This place came about because of a decision Kirk made
And in one Kira's quarters the other almost has to stay.

6) Panic has gripped this intestellar union
Changelings are in the capital causing much confusion.

7) A few of the officers go on vacation to be alone
But some radicals think they can cast the first stone.

8) An experimental gun plus a crazy alien
Equal murder in this, a most most deadly equation.

9) Selecting a new Nagus? Quark can't believe his ears!
He decides that for Ferengi, the line must be drawn here.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, July 13, 1999 - 1:41 pm:

I'll have to say that Nick gets #5. He just posted it at the same time I posted the scores, so I didn't read it. ScottN gets 6. Current scores are Nick 8, Meg 6, ScottN 4. Misses are Nick 1, everyone else 0.

By Len on Wednesday, July 14, 1999 - 2:48 pm:

Man! I'm out of town a few days and I'm already down by 8!! :^(

However, I would point out 2 things:
First, 2nd set #2: Wasn't QUARK on that field trip too??

Second, 1st set #4: Wouldn't "The Die is Cast" or "Tacking Into The Wind" both qualify as answers?? I would suggest that the "true" Trekouplet is one where the clues point to a best, single, unique episode. However, in the event that there is more than one episode that fits the clue EQUALLY to the "right" one, credit should be given! Is there anything about "Broken Link" which makes it more correct than those two? If not, I claim 2/3, or 0.66, for that question from Scott! :^) (Sorry dude, no offense!)

By ScottN on Wednesday, July 14, 1999 - 3:39 pm:

Len, yes there is. 1stSet#4 - "The horror of web surfers everywhere" - Broken Link

By Len on Wednesday, July 14, 1999 - 3:54 pm:

Scott, I don't get it: why is "the horror of web surfers everywhere" a reference to "Broken Link" (as opposed to the other 2 eps I mentioned)?

By ScottN on Wednesday, July 14, 1999 - 5:05 pm:

When you surf the web, and the page you want isn't there, you get a message about a "Broken Link". Or at least, that's the common term used to describe a link that doesn't go anywhere.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Wednesday, July 14, 1999 - 9:52 pm:

Yeah, Quark was on the trip too. But so were the rest of them, and I couldn't fit him in the couplet.

Sorry I haven't done any today. I've been busy building myself a web page. Tomorrow I'll do a double set.

By Len on Thursday, July 15, 1999 - 7:37 am:

Scott, I was unfamiliar with the application of the term "Broken Link" to web surfing. As such, I acknowledge it as a superior solution to the Trekouplet to the ones I suggested, and I retract my claims on your points! :^)

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Thursday, July 15, 1999 - 3:02 pm:

This set of couplets is a bit undersized
And one of them was editorialized.

1) Odo must puddle in somebody's dress
Fortunately, it didn't make much of a mess.

2) To everything there was a purpose and reason
In this episode from the next-to-last season.

3) In this adventure, they see a dead Founder
And a new female Vorta, boy I'd sure like to pound her. (as in "beat up" --ed.)

4) The crew discovered a planet that wasn't quite there
And we counted the spots next to Dax's hair.

5) This time, it was revealed to Ezri
That the solution to the problem was all in the family.

6) The Dominion's hold on the station isn't but six episodes old!
Isn't Starfleet being a little too bold?

7) The Prophets first discover their Emissary
And take the form of the one he had married.

8) They eventually solve most of the tribulations
Caused by a Klingon's attempt at historical mutation.

I know that I said there'd be a double set,
But I'm just not good enough to do that yet!

By ScottN on Thursday, July 15, 1999 - 3:57 pm:

1. The Forsaken
2. Who Mourns for Mourn
3. The Ship
4. Meridian
5. Prodigal Daughter
6. Favor the Bold
7. Emissary
8. Trials and Tribble-ations

By ScottN on Thursday, July 15, 1999 - 3:58 pm:

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, July 16, 1999 - 11:51 am:

No and no. Current scores are ScottN 11, Nick 8, Meg 4. Misses are Len 3, ScottN 1, Nick 1.

By Len on Friday, July 16, 1999 - 12:24 pm:

Hey! I should only have *2* wrong! I clearly withdrew my first guess at number 1!! :^)

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, July 16, 1999 - 12:37 pm:

Oops. Hit the wrong number. Big fingers. Smal keyboard. Hate when that happens. Current misses are Len 2, ScottN 1, Nick 1.

By Len on Friday, July 16, 1999 - 12:38 pm:

How about 2. Statistical Probabilities?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, July 16, 1999 - 7:08 pm:

No. Here's another couplet for that one. Number 2 will now be worth 1/2 point.

In a Jem'Hadar ship the crew is flitting around
Because it's time to do the opposite of sitting down.

By Marian on Friday, July 16, 1999 - 7:14 pm:

Is it "A Time to Stand"?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, July 16, 1999 - 7:20 pm:

Yes, indeed! Score is now ScottN 11, Nick 8, Meg 4. Marian .5, Len 0. Misses are Len 3, ScottN 1, Nick 1. More later.

By Len on Sunday, July 18, 1999 - 9:33 am:

Matt, how is "To everything there is a purpose and reason" a clue to "A Time to Stand"???? (as opposed to any of the other 6th season eps)

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Sunday, July 18, 1999 - 11:35 am:

Sorry. I was attempting to bring to mind that @#$#$%^ song. You know "to everything, turn turn, there is a season, turn, turn, and a time for every purpose under heaven." I belive that "a time to stand" was in there as well. Oh well. New set later today.
